David Duval

Been watching Live From the Masters today and I really like hearing what David Duval has to say about the players and the game. He seems to really cut through a lot of the crap and fluff that Aaron Oberholser and other announcers get on about.

 

Not saying those other guys don't say some good stuff (although Aaron really likes to talk about his golfing career), but I'm starting to wish Duval got more airtime compared to these other guys.

I’ve said it before, Duval should have been NBC’s hire instead of Azinger.  Not sure Duval wants to work that many weeks on the road but he would be really good as a lead analyst.

There was a Ryder Cup not too long ago when Duval was getting into it with Brandel during a Live From - fun to watch.  Without saying it, it was kind of a "Hey, I was there and I've been there so not putting up with the BS" kind of an attitude for a bit, lol. They seem to get along better, but haven't seen them together yet, haha.  Duval has good insights but I see he's ditched the Amish carpenter look, a few years ago I kept thinking Harrison Ford was going to show up - "Book!"

I love hearing Duvals insight on the game. He really has a good perspective on the game and doesn’t go off target very often. I find his analysis of players to be spot on and not “Twitter” esque.  He was an incredible player. He does a great job of using that as reference without tooting his own horn. I’ve been impressed with him during his time on the mic

I’d rather see him in the stupid because he’s able to expand on what’s being discussed rather than give quick shots, which is what’s needed for a live broadcast. He’s done it before, but his intelligence and insight is best displayed in the studio.

NBC has the US Open and the Open Championship.  Duval would be able to accurately describe the pressure a 54 home leader is feeling down the stretch rather than just say, boy it’s hard to win a tournament.  That’s why that position is a major champion.  His insight could work as the lead analyst just as well in my opinion as the rest of the crew should defer to the lead.  They all have roles to play and Azinger is just brutal to listen to.  You’re spot on that’s he is great and can speak with intelligence in the studio.

Only a person playing at the highest level could understand fully the pressure of playing at the highest level and being in contention.

Glad to see that there seems to be a consensus with Duval. He is a terrific analyst. He knows what he is talking about and is able to explain his thoughts to the us as viewers without using words that he read in a thesaurus but doesn’t really understand (I’m looking at you Brandel).

Oh, there is no contest that Duval is far better to provide analysis than Chamblee these days. Chamblee seems to have gotten full of himself and loves the spotlight. The hair, the clothes and the recitation of statistics important only to him seem more important to him than actually providing useful insight to the viewer. He doesn't like being disagreed with either, as past time on-set with Nobilo and Duval has shown.

 

Duval has the perspective that can only come from someone who has contended in and actually won majors. He also seems to have the ability to be succinct and get his point across easily. But it has struck me that he has always been a somewhat reluctant participant on the GC programming. I saw him on the early afternoon Live From the Masters segments this week with Oberholser and Cara Banks. I confess I had the thought that he was on there so he didn't have to deal with Chamblee. I recall them sparring a few times in the past on-set and I could understand why DD might not want to put up with that.

 

As an aside - I noticed that he was not wearing his usual rotation of eyeglasses on-air this week and instead had just a squinty-eyed look. I guess he either got a set of ill-fitting contacts or recently had laser surgery.

Great Guy too! Not a snot nosed elitist self-entitled country club Tour diva. Quiet, soft spoken witty and funny when comfortable, though intense as h*ll, and he really did laugh in Tiger's face when he gave him his "Tiger glare" in mid '99 on the first tee. I told him that that was one of the greatest "F yous" that I'd ever seen on Tour, he laughed and I asked him what was going through his head when, with his O-wrap mirrors on, he just stared back at Woods and then broke into a wide mouth grin. He again grinned and said that he found it hilarious that a "kid" five years his Junior was trying to "glare me down."

 

He then chirped, "who did he think that I was, _ _ _ _ _ _ _  _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _?," and he let out an audible laugh, which sorta caught Maddie and I off guard, though I cracked up cuz thinkin of and visualizing the Player that he named, I could picture the scene had it been this Player instead of David at the receiving end of the "Tiger glare," and it was funny, lolol. While I'm not gonna name the Player, and while I don't know if he ever did receive the "glare," he made numerous comments publicly which I found sickening considering that he was supposedly a competitor and a Top-5 Player. Based on his words, and performance when he was in a position to challenge Tiger, he was more the b*tch boy than legitimate competitor. That's why I've always loved David, Vijay and Hal Sutton. 
 

While the vast majority of Tour Boys were ooooing aaaahing cooing and fawning over Tiger, those three carried themselves with dignity, Played with intensity and while they might not have won the war, they all won some serious battles against Tiger at his best, with David and Vijay reaching #1 in the world, stepping over Tiger to get there, and Hal taking Tiger down at the age of 41yo for his 2000 Tour Championship victory with his now legendary "Be the right club today" 6i on 18.

 

David is a breadth of fresh air however he marches to his own drummer, as he always has so it also would not surprise me if I read one day that he had stepped out of the commentary game to spend more time with his family or just to smell the roses. He appreciates life, his blessings & good fortune, though he also understand its fragility, whether it be the Love and loss of a Loved One or the ability to place a 6i on a dime. Both are here today........gone tomorrow

 

Oh, and Tiger apparently was drawn to the fact that David was not intimidated by him and they became good "Tour friends(David's phrase)," even teaming together to win the 2000 WGC-World Cup. Also, his fave nickname is "Double D," lol

after listening to DD , you realize just how sour a personality Zinger really is...Leonard is ok but  he is a little too uptight for my tastes. DD seems comfortable in his own skin and would seem to be the type you could just sit around and have a conversation with...I enjoy when his segments come up

I really like David Duvall and have wondered why he got replaced on Live From by Justin Leonard. I think Leonard does a good job but Duvall was better (as was Nobilo)
 

I know Chamblee gets a lot of criticism but personally I think he does an outstanding job. He takes his job seriously, does a lot of homework and it can’t be easy to give analysis - remember he’s paid to give analysis (it’s not like someone stuck a mic in his face) and he tries to be fair to the players while giving an honest opinion. I respect that. I love Live From and Brandel is a big reason.

The thing about David is that he is very thoughtful. He does not say things to grab headlines or water cooler talk. He doesn't try and sound smarter than everyone else. He doesn't have an agenda. 

 

He tells what he thinks. What he felt in a similar situations. All honest observations. Just like when he played. His interviews were just honest answers. No bragging 

No big headed BS. 

 

It's refreshing actually.

Part of what makes Duval so good is that he seems really comfortable with his legacy and place in the game. I don't get the feeling that he has many regrets about his career, which is a rarity for guys at his level.

I must be getting old because for the first time in my life there is an announcer that I just don't like.  Yeah, that can o corn baseball guy is annoying and Chamblee tries too hard to be Skip Bayless but Azinger... ugh.  Talks too much and says stupid things.  Watched a month ago and he was blabbering about the oversized putter grips. SuperStroke or whatever they're called.  Like he doesn't know exactly what they're called and hasn't tried them himself.  People that watch golf are generally smarter than the average bear.  Get announcers with above average intelligence.  Maybe the executives think we want more outgoing personalities with pizzazz.  We don't.  Duval quietly communicating his thoughts is great.

I must be in the minority, because I just like to watch the action.  I have no interest in listening to talking heads, "experts" and pointless analysis of sporting events...it's not that complicated!

 

Occasionally, a sports commentary channel will pop up on SiriusXM when I searching...after a minute or two, I always wonder why someone would rather tune in to this drivel rather than listen to music or silence.
