Towel, brush, or both?

Recommended Posts

How do you guys keep your clubs clean on the course?  I’ve never thought much about it and just use a towel that has a wet corner.  If the grooves look bad I use a tee to clean them.
The other day I was paired with someone who was convinced I needed a brush of some sort, and he used a stiff bristled brush on his clubs after every single shot.  Honestly it was low key annoying...it didn’t take a ton of time, but wasted a little and seemed excessive.  That said, I’m open to the idea that I’m the one that is wrong on this one, hence the post.
Does anyone find any benefit to using more than a wet towel to clean their clubs on course?  Does anyone use the fancy water brushes?  I saw someone selling one on BST for $40 and that strikes me as crazy, but perhaps I’m missing the boat.
Honestly I almost never clean my clubs off the course either.  I regularly see people on here cleaning their clubs with buckets of water and such.  I’ve always just found them to stay fairly clean by simply using a damp towel after every shot (which I do, I’m not a complete animal).

just curious what others do, and if they notice a performance benefit or just prefer for them to look pristine?

I have a wire brush on my bag I got from the Dollar Tree along with the microfiber towel I also got there. The brush is on a retractable cord, seems to work well enough.

For carrying, a waffle weave towel and a brush most of the time but honestly I barely use the brush. A wet towel is the best, but sometimes you need something to get in the grooves to get stubborn dirt and sand.

I REALLY love the caddy towels, but wish there was a 1/2 size option when I don't want to carry around a soaking wet bath-size towel.

Just a towel for me on course, I do have this little pouch thingy that hangs on my bag that you wet the inside of, for cleaning your balls. So if I have an iron with some tough dirt the towel wont get ill jam the head into the wet pouch (how ya doin) and then wipe again with the towel.

Then yea later at home a little pot scrubber brush to clean em proper.

Frogger towel or something like that.  Nothing else.  A tee if I need it.  Dont overthink it.

My biggest problem is forgetting to wet the towel before the first tee. And it's easier to do that because the bucket of water you used to see where I play has disappeared since the pandemic.  Compounding the problem is the ball washers without water now.  Find myself looking for a pool of water from the last rain to clean up the ball. Having one of those brushes with a squirt gun of water is a good backup plan.

I usually just use a wet waffle towel, but sometimes stubborn dirt or sand needs a little extra help. I have one of these in an easily accessible pocket in the golf bag. I don't want a big brush hanging from the bag, so this is perfect for those situations.

Towel, with half of it plus a knot I tie loosely wet, and a tee. The tied knot keeps that portion of the towel wet after the rest of it has dried. Gives me a few extra holes to get to a water bucket, since they've mostly disappeared from the course these days. But I do have a brush I use at home to clean my clubs after most rounds.

I used to carry a brush with one of those retractable cords on my bag, but after stabbing myself in the back a couple times, it had to go.

I’m with Hawkeye77 on this one. A wet towel and a tee works like a charm!!!  And since I’m mildly OCD, I literally clean each club after every shot.

I’m the same as far as cleaning the club after each shot.  Honestly, I’ve never considered more than a towel before, but when someone suggested a brush it made me curious...

Towel either wet or dry depending on the day/course and a simple club brush. That's really all you need and honestly a towel does the job 98% of the time.

I use a wet towel and I do have a brush (use it instead of you using a tee when they need it).

But your other point that many are missing, I only clean mine while waiting for Someone in the group to get ready to hit.  That way I’m not wasting any time.  I don’t necessarily do it after my shot (unless that’s where I have to stand anyway while the next person hits)

I quit using the wet towel because they tend to stink rather quickly.  I prefer to use a brush and towel because I can get more than 1 round out of the towel.

Do the wet towel guys have a huge stack of towels or do you just put up with the stench?

like the other member said, you wash them!

I also have a groove sharpener with my brush, but I have never actually use it while on course. Not sure why it's there. 🤣

I have several microfiber towels I use.  Never had a brush.  I just use tees.  Maybe I should get a steel brush.

My course has club cleaners mounted to the carts so if necessary I use that.

But I generally just use a towel or my foot if I catch a practice swing heavy.  I have a carbide tipped thing that I use to clean grooves if needed.  But honestly I never use it.

I clean my clubs in the sink with a toothbrush after every round to clean out grooves.  Under most circumstances debris doesn’t pack in hard enough during a round that a towel can’t take care of.

    • Sony Open Pics from January 11, 2022 Part 1
I was able to get out to the Sony Open today to take a few pics.  I guess due to Covid precautions they kept the spectators pretty far from the players.  Also due to camera restrictions they've put in place, I wasn't able to bring the big lens like I normally do. Hopefully they'll ease up on the ropes and I'll be able to get more pics tomorrow!
