Towel, brush, or both?

I have one of those waffle weave ClubGlove towels hanging on my push cart. Unless the course is muddy, that seems sufficient to clean my irons and wedges most times without even being wet. I keep a small nylon brush in the ball pocket of my golf bag and on muddy days I may have to pull it out a time or two to get some mud out of the wedge grooves. Takes like 2 seconds with the brush vs. a lot of scrubbing with the towel.

 

My home course is mostly built on sandy soil. The downside is extra wear and tear on the soles and occasionally faces of the clubs. The up side is there's not a lot of sticky mud to clean out of the grooves.

I see guys all the time dipping their towels into the edge of a pond to wet them. I find the idea of carrying, handling and using a towel with pond water vaguely horrifying. I can't consider a club that's been "cleaned" using pond water to be better than one having a bit of dirt smeared on it but maybe I'm just a germophobe (or more like pesticideophobe).

microfiber towel in my back pocket whenever I'm playing/hitting. Doublesided wire/tooth brush is in the bag but really only gets used at home. Ball cleaning said towel (and some spit if necessary). Don't use any water on the course other than what's in my water bottle and that's for drinking.

hey, I’m not a germaphobe, and I also find the guys dipping the towels in the pond gross.  lol.
 

Maybe i should be clearer, when I say I use a wet towel, it’s wet with water from the sink or a water bottle, NOT stagnant puddle water living in a pond.

Towel, that I always forget to wet. Tees, to clean the grooves during play. In the bottom of one of my pockets is a small wire brush. In spring time the courses in PA are mushy. A lot of times at the end of the round you will have a club come out of the bag that has the grooves filled with very dry mud. So that's the only time I'll grab the wire brush. It's there but not used much.

Depends on the course, the soil composition, and the turf condition of the day.

 

Courses with bent grass or fescue from rich soil can really gum up the grooves. In that case, it takes a damp towel and a brush to get the grooves clean.

 

Courses with healthy zoysia, however, leave a bit of residue that can be cleaned off with swipe of a towel. The springy roots of zoysia work against beaver pelts.

 

On zoysia, my divot tends to be cutting into the soil, shearing a spot about the size of a quarter. On bent or fescue, my divot tends to be 2-3" long, and sometimes can be replaced.

 

If the underlying soil is sandy, then a firmer rubbing with a damp towel will get the grooves clean. After a bunker shot from dry sand, bang the head on the ground and follow up with a brush alone.

 

The toughest club cleaning scenario: Cart-path only moisture on rich soil.

 

Note on brush: I took pliers and pulled out the metal side of the brush bristles. Didn't want overly aggressive scratching of the face of fairways.

I do unfortunately. But if I had the ability to play multiple times a week I'd just have a pile of towels. You can often find those waffle woven caddies towels in bulk on ebay or Amazon. Just tossed the used ones in the hamper and fresh pile every week.

Both. Brush is usually only used when it's dry out and I get hard dirt stuck in the grooves. Otherwise a wet towel gets the job done.

In my experience, once the dirt dries on the waffle weave microfiber towels it will brush right off with a stiff nylon brush. I can use those towels almost indefinitely without washing. The dirt doesn't soak in, it kind of stays on the surface.

 

Of course that's in normal dry conditions. If I wiping mud off the club every hole (like during rainy spells in the winter) then it takes washing to get the towel clean.

Plastic tee for grooves if needed.

 

I'm not dissing a brush... I just don't use one.

 

The above yields clean enough clubs for me and no formal "cleaning" needed.

I use a large Micro-towel, 1/3 wet on one end and wipe my club head and grip right after each use and wipe ball off on next tee.   I never use ball cleaners either.

Majority of the time I am in my cart.  Have a club/ball cleaner attached to it.  Have a wire brush from Dollar General.  Always get one towel wet before starting a round.  Plus I have a groove cleaner in my pocket that gets used plenty.

 

I suffer from SARS, (severe anal retentive syndrome).

+1 for the Grooveit brush.  but as for the OPs question I use both a caddy towel in conjunction with the Grooveit brush.

Get a stack of towels and rotate them, so you don't have to wash them often.

 

Personally, I like the uber-cheap $3 bath towels at Walmart or Ikea. They're big, and being cotton don't dry out as fast as microfiber (an issue here in arid Colorado). I get them in dark colors.

 

I'll dip a towel in a running stream (again, common here in Colorado), but not a stagnant pond.

 

I have a small brush, too. I comes in handy for those days where I just go to the range and forget to bring a towel. But, I could probably live without it, if it came down to that.

I have a brush and a wet and dry towel. I clean the grooves after every shot.  Doesnt slow me down at all, but I'm already a walker and play fast.  

Need to keep the clubs clean for best contact.  

I also wipe my grips down every round since I don't wear a glove and then wash and clean my grips and clubs at least once a month.

I have a regular, short-handled, plastic-bristled dishwashing brush from the supermarket. It lives in the front pocket of my bag where it stays out of sight until I need it. Maybe it's my swing or the courses I play, but I need the brush after most shots to get all kinds of gunk out of the grooves. It's much faster than using a tee and much more effective than a towel, which doesn't get in the grooves.

Frogger towel wet inside.  Wire and plastic bristle brush with a lil pick at the end.  Stays in padded pocket because I would always get stabbed by the wire bristles if hanging outside lol.

I use the same size towel as just about every caddy on tour. One half wet, one half dry. I have 5-6 I rotate through. Wipe off the big chunks before you use the towel so it doesnt soil up as fast

It's nothing to do with dirt in the grooves but I like to have a wet section on my towel during July and August so I can wipe the darned sweat off my hands.

I use towels I buy at the thrift stores by the bundle. Living in a tourist area we have lots of Motel sources so they are cheap. Lately I have been using some micro fiber towels from my club because I have won like 5 in the shootouts and raffle drawings. BTW the bundles usually have 20 to 25 towels and go from $5 to $7 a bundle and they are washed but I do not take a chance. If I buy a bundle I will throw them in the Laundromat washer up the street from me with bleach and Tide and take them home and put in the dryer. I usually recycle them in shop use then throw them away

Wire brush for almost all shots(literally 4-5 strokes along the grooves and good to go in seconds), and a dry towel for rainy days. The wet towel thing would only be good for cleaning a ball.
