Towel, brush, or both?

I can't be the only one who spits on his clubs and then wipes them clean with a smaller bath towel after each shot...

Works for cleaning marked balls on the greens too

I do this when I forget to wet my towel or it dries out during the round.  Cleaning off golf clubs really isn't that hard.

I get half my towel wet and leave the other half dry. Then have a brush or a tee to clean grooves as needed. The wet portion of the towel helps clean my clubs and the ball.

Wire brush users make me sick.  Lol nylon brushes work just as well. Personally I use a towel (non wet), I keep a small spray bottle (since 2011) filled with a dish soap that I’ll spray on my golf balls or will use on my clubs relative to whatever debris is on it. Usually when it’s wet /rainy/fall time but the towel wipe is enough

I see guys all the time dipping their towels into the edge of a pond to wet them. I find the idea of carrying, handling and using a towel with pond water vaguely horrifying. I can't consider a club that's been "cleaned" using pond water to be better than one having a bit of dirt smeared on it but maybe I'm just a germophobe (or more like pesticideophobe).

Wait till you get around guys who use spit to clean their clubs/balls. Forget cv19 you getting cootie hands after you shake their hand at the end of the round 🤣

Of all the things I miss from the pre-COVID days, shaking hands after golf is NOT one of them.

Start with the guy who has been reaching in his mouth to insert or extract tobacco all day. Then the inevitable guy who pulls off his hat, runs his hand over his sweaty head and then sticks it out to shake. And occasionally I'll be paired with the one guy in the group who is a nose-picker. I always contrived to somehow not quite be within arms length for the post-round handshake.

On a tangential note, this time of year I always wonder about the guys who stand on the first tee and squirt a huge dollop of sun screen on their hands then rub it in on their face and neck. Like 10 seconds later, with just a quite wipe on the towel they pick up their driver and swing away. How on earth does the club not fly out of their greasy hands? If I tried that it would be five holes before I got a decent grip on a club.

I just LOL'd in my office - no joke

I give her a spit and a rub down then put it back where it came from - probably takes 5-10 seconds start to finish...

we are still talking about cleaning clubs here right?

Wow, can't believe this thread got so much input. But as someone else pointed out there are different types of grass all over.

I'm good here in SoCal with half my waffle towel wet and never need a brush. I am not a digger tho. Wet the towel before teeing off on hole 1 and again at the turn and I'm good all round.

since I carry a cup of coffee, there's always a way to clean the ball and clubface.

downside is that one nasty looking corner of the towel.

I used to just wet a corner of a towel but when COVID hit and ball washers went away I picked up a ClubScrub and it’s been amazing. People have even complimented me on my clean balls.

But seriously, it’s better than a wet towel because you never have to worry about it drying out, even after 5+ hours in 100°!

I like Both towel & brush - but here's where that sux....on my Bennington QO-14, there is only one beaner side clip; so you get both items on the same side.  The wires on the brush grab and destroy any golf towel!🤓  You literally have a mini tug-o-war each time to clean clubs!

My Ping DLX bag has such clips on each side - much harmony and best of both worlds!

Brushes excel in sandy grooves, plastered on grass, and chunked dirt.

Towels wet or dry fine tune the face clean and make that eye test good!

  • 3 weeks later...

I was going to start a new thread, but found this one.  I have a few thoughts and also topics that I want feedback on:

  1. Nylon brush on retractable hook, spit, and a dry towel for years.
  2. Switched to a Frogger towel two years ago.  I was am amazed at how clean it got the grooves.
    1. It sucks now.  The outside gets wet on the borders and the inside won't stay wet for the entire round anymore.  I have no idea what has happened to it.  I have only machine washed it twice and did not use the dryer.  I only use the outside hose to spray the mud off after each round.
    2. Titleist makes a StaDry towel which I have read is a better Frogger towel, but it is $50!
  3. I found a pocket sized ClubGlove towel and it is impressive.  For wedge practice it is great.  It holds a ton of water.
    1. For those that use these wet: How do you keep the glove on your hand dry when using a normal wet towel?
  4. I think I am going to try out this Spotless swing.  Hopefully the outside can stay dry and I imagine since less air can move up into the shape, the inside should stay dry for an entire round.

Some people may think this kind of stuff is obsessive, but having every thing in order in your bag so there is no stress can really make the round more enjoyable and allow you to focus on the game.  I walk with a push cart and a Bennington Quiet Organizer 9 and that is hands down the best golf product I have every purchased.  Every club is just in its place.
