OEM swing weighting

Recommended Posts

I'm curious about factory swing weighting. My OEM advertises a D2 "standard" swing weight, but then offers 50 different shafts, grips etc. which I'm assuming all have an effect on swing weight.  So I pull the shafts this week and there are no tip weights on any of the clubs, just glued, some with a ton of extra epoxy in the hosels which also has an effect on swing weight. So, given all the variables, can the "D2" swing weight be accurate?

I think that the quoted specs for clubs are based on the designed component weights. Off the rack clubs are just assembled as is, and swingweight will vary with manufacturing tolerances. I've seen head weight variations of ±6-7 grams, which can throw individual swingweights off by a few points.

I'm sure some manufacturers are better than others, and some might use tip weights to try to get closer to designed swing weight, but not all do.

^^ THIS.
Basically if you deviate from the stock offering, nothing is guaranteed. Any club I purchase I plan on having to adjust in some way to fit my preferences.

Ya, ^^THAT. And even for builds that don't deviate from stock. 🙂

Last two sets of irons I ordered from Mizuno I asked for grips loose, 1/4" long, "A" weight heads, and "BEST" SW.

Day they arrive I break out the heat gun, clean, spine shaft, tip weight, butt trim, and then grip.

Looking at TSi3 and 4 heads recently, I can confirm what @Ger21 said there too; seeing range of roughly 7 grams in those heads for "standard" stock builds.

Agreed. I’d actually prefer to order sets not assembled to save propane cost on my torch. 😂

I know!

Shouldn't be a big deal to grab a set of iron heads and toss them in a box and mail out.

Good that there's a few component options out there -- just wish more OEMs were willing to play along with us hobbyists.

Next time I go to a fitting event, I look forward to an OEM rep trying to feed me an excuse around "quality control" or "build tolerances" as an excuse for why they need to assemble them. 🤣

One problem OEMs have is trying to match up lighter shafts with seniors who used steel shafted drivers back in the 1960s and 1970s. I'm one of those guys.

Some of the graphite iron shafts leave one with a C8 swingweight, which just feels more feathery than a D1 or a D2.

Two different clubsmiths have told me that Callaway and Ping will tip weight the clubs a little to get the irons back into the D range if you request it.

But some of the lighter graphite iron shafts (in the ~ 70-gram range) feel quite balanced despite the lighter weight.

The OEMs acknowledge that manufacturing tolerances mean head weights and swing weight can vary slightly. Example: Ping i210 tableau, see small print...

Full tableau, see Ping i210

Or, check out the component head listings at GolfWorks:

All these would influence swingweights. If SwWt floats between D1 and D2 for numbered irons, good deal. Nobody can feel the slight variances. But, if it's D4 for the 5i and D1 for the 6i, and the shafts are the same length, we've got problems.

I have a set of OEM PXG 311VF with KBS Tgi Shafts.  I just checked the swing weights and they increase through the set.  5I  is C6  6I is C8

7I is D0 8I is D1  9I is D2 W is D2 G is D3.  It seems like it was done on purpose.  Shouldn't they be closer together?

Yes.  Something is messed up with that set or the previous owner (it they are second and, PXG wouldn't do that) tried something funky.  Now some people like to use progressive swing weights to get a rough MOI match - but I've never heard of any OEM doing it and even in that case the difference should be a LOT smaller, only 2/3  (0.6) of a sw pt per club (with 1/2" length increments), not 2 full sw pts.  e.g. 5i C9, 6i C9.6, 7i D0.3, 8i D1, 9i D1.6,.....

Can you tell if any butt weights were used in the build?  I would think it would be tough to get that much variation with just head weight adjustments (assuming normal length increments).

One possible explanation *could be* from tip/butt trimming the TGI shafts in a way that made a progressively tip-end balance point.

.370 parallel shafts, by nature, offer a lot of flexibility (and thus variability, intended or otherwise). I don't know how PXG trims their shafts, but it's certainly possible to build a relative progressive balance point and step 1 SW point heavier as you go down the irons.
