What's up with Rors

His shot on 10 looked like he fanned it right into the woods.  Here's an interesting take on what one instructor thinks is going on.

Rors at least beat DJ this week. DJ hasn't played great on the PGA Tour since he won The Masters last fall. DJ goes goes from setting a record score at The Master to an M/C there. Where is the what's wrong with DJ thread? Is DJ done? Of course not but there is so much overreaction here when the best players hit a rough patch for their skill level.

It's called golf. But the numerous double digit WRX indexes here that struggle to break 80/90/100 on their own on a regular basis sure seem to know what's best for touring professionals. <SMH>

I love the guy, would LOVE to see him winning more, but 7 years since his last major. ouch.

DJ's last major - 7 months

DJ went 4.5 years between his two majors. <gasp>

A player light years better than than Rory, DJ and pretty much everyone in the recorded history of professional golf recently went 11 years between majors and 14 years between Masters wins. Rory will be okay. Relax.

It's interesting how Rory went from the hottest player by far in the world in late 2019 through the stoppage of play from COVID in early 2020 to "struggling" in his return. He's struggled some since play started back up in 2020 to current. That's called golf. He hasn't tumbled as far as YJS or Rickie or Phil.

By the reactions of many here on his play you would think Rory is a Smylie Kaufman reincarnate. Outside of the absolute greatest players in golf history there is a small window that players win most of their majors in. Generally 7-8 years. Perhaps Rory has reached that threshold. Perhaps not. How about we let it play out.

I know when my daughter was born, it was quite a long time until I had enough courage to ask the wife if I had permission to go play...maybe it took him longer than expected to finally get his full on hall pass. 😉 He’ll be fine...life happens to us all.

Ru talking about golf? Or seeing other women? Lol?

Normally I would say its the type of course but he did get a late start. It seems like the front nine does not suit him. I think the hills and change in elevation add some wind adds more doubt. I look at the guy leading Rose an how many cuts did he miss as a pro when he first started out and now look at him. We all know JS struggles however, a touring pro needs to be completely dedicated or there are several young guys that will pass right on  by.

Agreed.  For the longest time, his full wedges (and to a lesser extent his putter) have been frustratingly mediocre.  I say frustrating because his ball-striking off the tee was phenomenally good, and he just seemed to be wasting his gifted talent with his bad approach shots.  Even when he eventually regains his prowess off the tee, IMO, he still needs to address his wedge play from 80-140 yards in.  Come to think of it, like most of us do.

All his problems seem to be in relation to distance control, which has just never been addressed. Tiger was not good at it to start with but became the best. DJ realised it a few years ago...

People reference the missed putt on the second the year Read won, but it was his approach to the 3rd that finished him off that year. Coming up short and spinning it off the green & Read makes birdie.

He will be back, no doubt.

His driver is really letting him down. I don't know why he entered the arms race with BD, but it was a big mistake. Not to mention, he made several equipment changes in the past couple of months (new ball, new shafts in the irons, different style putter). His driving was pitiful at Augusta, coming down the stretch. Maybe the right misses are coming from him trying to dial it back a bit? Watching him hit short irons and wedges lately is baffling.

I agree.  He missed it right quite a bit yesterday.  the announcers thought that his shoulders looked open to his line, which could be a problem.  But I would like to see him return to the driver that he used to win the Canadian Open and the Tour Championship.  He had a lot of confidence in that club.  Perhaps he would lose a few yards, but it might help him re-slot his swing.

I wonder if his TaylorMade contract would allow him to use a previous model driver?

There are a lot of stupid replies in this thread lol.  The guy has gone through slumps before (wasnt it 16 where everyone proclaimed him done for good?) He was on a tear in 19.  He is far too talented to be down for good, he will adjust and be better than ever.  Will he ever win a green jacket?  I say yes.  But even if he retires tomorrow, hes still a hall of fame, top 10 golfer of all time.

Not sure many are saying he is doing for good, just saying he is a mess and it would be great to see him come back soon.

I think Dottie, yesterday, said it best.  Rory got caught up in trying to catch up with Bryson's distance.  Doing so has taken him away from his game and has him over swinging.  Yes, he can get back his old self, it's just going to take some time to find his self-confidence again.  Driven by expectations and media, Tour players are awfully fragile and insecure.

I’ll add another dumb reply ; )

If he retires tomorrow, Rory is nowhere near top 10 all time.

Hes in the Ernie Els. Ray Floyd class.

Just above the VJ, Padraig Harrington, Hale Irvin class.

But miles from the from the Snead, Watson class

And a full galaxy from the TW, Jack class

Is kind of like

He admittedly tried to keep up with DeChambeau and realized it wasn't a good thing for him in the long run. He will get it back as he's too athletic not to recover but he's going to get worse before he gets better. Time will tell if he'll be the same or better than the one we were watching when Jack said he'd win 15 or more majors. I wish him the best.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

HOF, Yes.

Top 10 All-Time, Nope. Maybe in contracts but not accomplishments on the course against his peers.

1. Significantly improve distance control with irons. I've said before I honestly think hitting mostly knockdowns and taking 10 yards off every club up and down the bag would help him a ton.

2. Spend the cash and get himself a Tiger short game/wedge area in his back yard with a former Augusta greenskeeper and grind back there for months. I think if you watched him take on Reed/Webb Simpson/or a top around the greens tour player in a chipping/wedge/short game contest it would be disturbingly lopsided.

3. Drastic change in putting method. This blocky jab stroke he's using just isn't getting it done. Time to go to some kind of claw or armlock method. Guys turning into Boo Weekley/Sergioesque in failing to convert makeable looks.

4. Honestly wish someone he really looks up to would slight him with a comment and put a chip on his shoulder. He's kinda been the happy go lucky everyone's "buddy" guy on tour and wish he'd act more like Reed.

This is officially Rory's first slump. People referencing previous seasons haven't done enough digging.

I would say it is his second slump, 2013 was not very good at all. And it came right in the middle of his best period of his career actually. But from he signed the Nike contract until October that year, he didn't really do anything and really struggled to deal with the increased scrutiny.
