Winn Grips on Tour

Recommended Posts

Noticed a Winn grip on a putter the other day (Harmon?) Which got me thinking, you see a fair number of Winn's on recreational clubs, but does anyone use them on tour?

Winn wears out way too fast

I don’t think anyone on the PGA Tour uses their grips outside of putters. And most those guys are the ones with the 15” counterbalance grip like Hovland uses. Pretty much everybody uses a standard rubber grip or a SuperStroke of their choice.

Good point. Grips are a strange thing. As to putter grips, to each their own, but swing grips, Golf Pride are so dominant and offer just about everything and anything a golfer could want. Except Bryson, nobody is looking towards the grip for a performance benefit, and if they are, it’s subtle, like adding a layer of tape or two.

as an antedote, I’d shudder at the idea of playing the same iron set for three years or more, while I wouldn’t be put off if you told me I can only play tour velvet cords for the rest of eternity.

as for Winn’s, they’re so darn light. Once I started playing my clubs at +1/2”, they aren’t a possibility.

Regripped an iron set when Winn was launched back in the day. The lack of durability & loss of tackiness over time left an everlasting bad impression. Aside from an occasional driver or wedge re-grip over the years, Winn non-putter grips are at the bottom of my grip list.

I did like the 1.18 putter grip though.

As the sayings go, if you’re playing a guy with Winn grips and iron covers you like your chances.. John Daly played Winn grips.. He would be the only “good” player I’ve ever seen with Winn grips on the driver through wedge

Doesn’t surprise me pros don’t use them. Winn is by far the worst grip company out there. The lack of durability is a major turnoff, and from my experience working in club repair you’re lucky to get 2-3 months if you play often. I’ve seen $2 grips last longer than Winn’s. Never understood how they “claimed” to be the best grip in golf.

I was using the Dri-tac wrap midsize on my driver all last year. Loved them but they wear out so fast.

I have since bought the Dri-tac 2.0 jumbo size & put them on my woods & hybrid while switching the driver to a Jumbo UltraMax XS. My glove size is normally just a large.

Interesting that this became kind of a "poll" on what Wrx members thought of Winn grips. That said, I agree with the majority, they're too soft & don't last. A $10 grip has to last more than a few mths. I'll stick w/ GP MCC.

For me, and I'm assuming a lot of players - including pros - the problem with Winn grips is their construction approach/philosophy. The connection between the underlisting and surface of the grip - particularly on the wrap models - never feels completely secure. So you get that "mushy" or "twisting" feeling during the stroke. No matter how secure your grip, it always felt hard to control the club.

I used to play winn grips to cut down on the carpal tunnel. I ended up switching to super stroke cross comfort though and find them overall vastly superior. They're cheaper, last a lot longer, and have more feel with out being punishing. One note is that the cross comfort can get slick if really wet at first but after a few rounds it's almost like the mold release agent wears off and the poly really grips.
