Golf Club Pencils - eraser or no eraser?

Recommended Posts

I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts about clubs which have erasers on their pencils compared to clubs without one.

I used to think that "nicer" courses (especially resorts) are willing to pay 5 cents more / pencil to have an eraser, but a friend pointed out the other day that there shouldn't be any erasing being done in the first place, so perhaps some of the clubs we've all heard of which have been around for centuries now don't bother with them (agree 100% with this assessment, but I continue to be surprised by those with / without)

Probably should be spending time thinking about far more important things (in life & in golf) but this is about as good of a place to ask as any!

The eraser is the best club in my bag.

This is a very interesting topic. I’m sure someone on this forum is a pencil collector and can give us a list to ponder.
I have scorecards from many great courses but never thought about the pencils...

No erasing done with scoring? Never made a mistake when writing down your opponent's score and had to erase at some point when you review it with them?

I like the look of a pencil with an eraser better, though the eraser usually hardens with time and becomes totally useless anyway, so I'd probably opt for ones without to save money if I was in charge of finances at a course.  For the few times I've ever had to change a score, it's usually been easy to simply write over the incorrect number.

Whats the point of using a pencil if it doesn't have an eraser?  That's the whole benefit of pencils

Ha, so true! But I still can't decide what to think...I guess there's not an "answer" but it would be pretty cool to assemble a collection of the top 100 courses in the U.S. (who's list of the top 100 is a topic for a totally different thread) and see which have / don't have erasers. Someone out there has got to have a collection like this....

Definitely need the eraser. How many times have you started on the back nine, and then four holes in you realize you're standing on the teebox at a par 3, but the scorecards last it listed as a 550 yd par 5? Lol. Whoops. 'Didn't flip the scorecard over to start the round.

I collect golf pencils with erasers and put them into my toolbox. Great for when needing to mark/erase stuff on drywall/wood.

In Sweden, pencils are not provided. So I collect a bunch and bring them over for my in-laws; otherwise, they'll get pencils from Ikea.

I am horrible with names.  I have to write down names and a short description to help me remember.  Bill-red shirt, etc.

Eraser helps.

I also try to keep track of other things like GIR, putts, etc. as someone above mentioned.  I use The Grint but don't like using my phone while playing.

I think people like the 'joke' about not needing an eraser, but in practical sense they come in handy. I have written the wrong score down a bunch of times. We are all pretty good golfers, so on a regular round people don't always call out scores as much as they should - they just kind of expect I will know what they shot. 99% of the time I do. But when we get to the turn I always call out scores and if there is an issue we correct them - eraser needed.

Upon further investigation, for those interested in the difference in price (I was surprised at how much more $$ pencils with erasers do cost!) - I looked at the site of the company which appears to be the main supplier of all these pencils. Also, next time you play a new course, notice if the pencil is round or hexagonal. The round ones are for the high rollers. They're almost 2 cents more each than the hexagonal ones!

Don't ask me why I wasted my time doing this, but see below for more info:

Hexagonal - no eraser: ~$0.22 cents / each

Hexagonal - eraser: ~$0.24 cents / each

Round - eraser: ~$0.26 cents / each
