Weakening Lofts on Srixon ZX7’s?

Apologies if this has been covered already but I wasn’t able to find anything on it. 
 

I’m eyeing some Srixon ZX7’s and I don’t like the strong lofts as I can’t get them to spin enough. I love the feel though and am thinking that weakening the lofts to more traditional. 
 

my concern is that with being a sweeper, that I’ll just hit everything thin. Am I being paranoid or is it a legitimate concern?

The soles of the ZX7 are already designed for someone who digs a bit. Weakening the loft and adding more bounce to it may not be in your best interest as someone who sweeps it. I’d recommend trying them on real grass if you’re able.

How weak are you planning on going?  Srixon will go +2 to -2 on loft so I don’t think they feel it would be an issue with affecting bounce too much.

They’re not crazy strong so I wouldn’t need to go over 2 degrees weak.

Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be able to try a weakened head on grass. That’d be ideal though.

I thought the lofts on the ZX7 were pretty close to traditional, unless by traditional you mean PW at 47* and 5 iron at 27*.  If that's what you're after it's only 1-2* adjustment across the set which is easy to do with this iron.

You will be fine at 2* or less of adjustment.

0 issues from a playing perspective IMHO. 

 

The 6" between your ears?  Whole other ball game....

 

Might have to buy a single iron and go for a spin, see what you think.

I've bent my z785 4-6 1* weak to match my z-forged and I haven't noticed any significant change in bounge. I'm pretty steep though

I checked them out.  Srixon lofts are mostly 2' stronger than my more traditionally lofted 620s, but the sole is comparatively narrow.  Srixon is doing with Titleist and other OEMs are, not publishing bounce.    I still believe sweeping and scraping turf should not be an issue with those irons. 

 

You might look at the effects of weakening loft and that effects offset and increases bounce.  The latter may or may not come into play more than benefiting from weakening lofts 1 or 2'.  

 

I am not convinced the lofts of those irons would hurt ball spin.  Most people benefit from spin.  The amount of spin IMO is also more about how the loft interacts with the chosen shaft, your AoA, and how you impact the ball.

So out of curiosity I put my set on the Mitchell TourGauge just to verify the factory specs.  My set was supposed to be standard loft/lie.  The lie angles were absolutely perfect, first set from any manufacturer that I’ve had that was spot on.  

Now the lofts on the other hand were horribly out of spec, almost every club was somewhere between 1.5 to 3 degrees strong from standard spec.  Had to adjust them all weaker to get my normal progression from 22* 4 iron to 46* PW.  A bonus was it took some of the offset out, not that it was bad to begin with.

Bending these however was a pleasure.  Like warm butter, probably the easiest clubs to bend I’ve ever done and I’ve bent them all at some point.

 

Moral of this story, double check your specs, I don’t think Srixon is double checking lofts before they go out the door if your ordering standard specs or buying off the rack.

Another thing you could look at along with weakening lofts is switching to a higher spin ball

Weakening them 2* will add two degrees of bounce which isn't a big deal even for a sweeper of the ball.  No need to be paranoid, if you don't like it ...bend em back or bend em again!

I honestly don’t get why the v sole would be any issue. All irons have some kindof of camber, roll and bounce. The v sole is designed to allow you to get in the turf and back out of it quickly. For a sweeper it should have zero effect at all. I don’t think you will have any issue whatsoever going 2 weak on the ZX7.

I play a combo set of 4-6 ZX5 and 7-PW Zx7.  I had to add 2* of loft to the 4-6 simply because the clubs went to far and left me with a big distance gap in my bag.  I am a sweeper and noticed very little difference in the bounce on the 4-6 after having them bent.  If anything it actually made them a bit easier to hit.
