Using an Excel spreadsheet and the formula shown on the GolfWRX homepage, modified for 9 holes, I get the 18 that I rounded off to show in my sig line on the forums here...you know, the number under my avatar.

However, using my profile on The Grint, it comes out to a whopping 26.

It looks like The Grint combines 9 holes in sets of 2 to bring a total of 18 holes, then uses that combination of scores in their calculations...whereas my spreadsheet, and the formula from the front page, divides the course rating by 2 to even it up.

I'm clearly missing something on my own spreadsheet here, but I'm totally lost as to what's going on.  So, what I'm asking is precisely how bad I am at golf

Woof.  I do that, and I hit 30 on my own calculation sheet.

In the USGA course database each 9-holes has it's own slope and rating. You can't take the 18 hole number and simply divide by 2.

Ah, I didn't know there was a USGA course database.  I simply was just taking the 18 hole course rating and dividing by 2, going on a Google search of "[course name] course rating," and taking the results.

While that gets you in the ballpark, you have to make sure you NEVER divide the slope by 2. The Slope is a ratio. When combining the slope of front and back 9, it's an AVERAGE of the two, not a total.

In other words, if you had a course which was 72.0 / 126, you COULD assume the front and back ratings are 36.0 (while unlikely, it's probably pretty close). However the slope is NOT 63, the slope would remain at 126.

But finding the actual 9 hole ratings on the National Course DB is much better. Also website and even printed scorecards are often really inaccurate.

Another pickle - two of the courses I frequent aren't listed on the National Course DB.  One's a par 3 course that The Grint accounts for, and the other is a par 4 executive course.  Do executive rounds not count?

Bump for another question - while dinking around on The Grint, exploring their features and stuff, I found that it's got me down for a number of eagles.  I know for a fact that I've never recorded an eagle.  I got to the point last summer that I could generally expect a birdie every 9 holes, but an eagle is something that would definitely stick out in my mind as cause for celebration.  When I opened up the individual rounds, it looks like these specific holes were Par 3s that I had as birdies (2 strokes...iron onto the green, putt or chip in), whereas The Grint had them recorded as Par 4s.

Is this some handicap mathemagical shenanigans where I recorded "net eagle" or something?

If the Grint is showing them as par 4s then it likely has the course data wrong.

TheGrint doesn't and isn't capable of combining 9 hole scores to get the correct 18 hole differentials.   I questioned that issue last year.   The course I play frequently has a harder front 9 than the back.    They got it wrong when combining .

I frequently catch them with wrong course data.   They calculate the differential wrong and frequently have a different rating and slope than the USGA database.    I check their numbers every time I play vs the USGA database.

I believe because of the daily handicap update they are now having the USGA calculate your handicap.

They definitely need to step up their game.

Hi Denny. I represent TheGrint and we would like to clarify your comment. As you noted our Index is calculated in the USGA servers. We do not perform calculation on our side since January 2020. The issue you mentioned of harder back/front 9s has been fixed since late 2019 right before we did the integration with the USGA. Please [email protected] if you have any further questions we would be happy to help.
