Poor Will (kinda)

He could finish 2nd in every tournament the rest of the year and still not make the playoffs or tour championship.

Give that kid a card!

Elaborate? I’m not exactly familiar with all the categories of status, but I believe he was extended special temporary membership via his finish at last years US Open. Which basically means as I understand it he has unlimited starts via sponsors exemptions. The PGA Tour is not not allowing him to play, on the contrary they recognized the talent and offered him a temporary membership for him to get as many opportunities as he could to earn his way on to the PGA Tour.

If/when he wins it’ll be a moot point. I do think he picks up a W sooner than later.

You are correct, with the special temp membership he has unlimited sponsor invites but he doesn't get to play in the FedEx cup playoffs unless he's a member.

The odd part of the STM in his case is that at this point he'd probably be inside the top 30 for FedEx cup points.

On a positive note he's well beyond the threshold he needed to be fully exempt for next season. Hopefully he gets a win this season and renders this discussion moot.

Random observation.

Zalatoris looks he could be Langer's son.

Its stupid and will cost him hundreds of thousands to possibly millions if he continues to do well.

If somebody could theoretically monday qualify in a bunch of tournaments and do well enough to get a ton of points, I'm not sure why they shouldn't be a part of the playoffs. This probably wouldn't happen in reality because they'd start picking up sponsors exemptions but it's just an illogical rule. PGA tour structure is basically designed to reward people with status and screw over people without status, regardless of results.

Oh definitely would be I would think (inside top 30). And again if he wins (and is awarded membership) he’d receive all the points accrued retroactively.

Because they’re not PGA Tour members is why they shouldn’t be allowed into Playoffs. The Tour has to protect its players/members. I don’t feel they’re doing anything that wouldn’t be done to any other player in this position, WZ is clearly a talented fella much more so than most players without status just a few years ago, but the rules (as dumb as they may be) are the rules.

But again if he wins than all of this is a moot point.

I would imagine that Will is extremely grateful to have earned the status he has and knows that he can get a sponsor invite anywhere he asks. Any finish in the top ten always gets him into the next open event also. No one was taking up his cause 5 days ago and he had the same exact status as he does today. He’s fine, only the weird 2 seasons in 1 season scenario caused by Covid has him a special temporary member still.  Guy was buying fast food with coupons and staying 3 to a room at a La Quinta Inn not long ago, I bet he is 100000x more grateful than he is resentful.

I 100% agree with this, I just think he found a loophole and wish the PGA would do right by him.

Regardless I think he has a stellar career ahead of him.

Been saying for months it was dumb. He was like 30s in the fed ex cup before this effectively, would literally be worth like 500k at end of season if he had status and he will probably continue to move up.

Ya it won't matter in grand scheme and he will likely make tens of millions if not more but rules can definitely be debated. He earned it.

I totally get it, that’s an understandable view. But one could also say that players earn the privilege of playing for the FedEx Cup by having status at the start of the season or by winning during the season.

Yeah but its not like he failed Q School, this is a COVID oddity that the PGA didnt have a back up plan for.

So if he makes it above 125 on the money list at the end of the year, will he have PGA status last year?

He already has qualified for the PGA Tour for next year. You qualify on Fed Ex Cup points not money. As a non member of the tour he currently is not eligible for the Fed Ex Cup playoffs unless he wins a tour event prior to the start of the Fed Ex Cup in August.

Anyone think he gets a captains pick for the Ryder Cup? Obviously as long as he stays in the same form he’s shown for the last 6/12 months

One would hope so especially as there are 6 captains picks this year. Of course that also opens it up more for the USA Team to again waste a captains pick on an older player based on name recognition that no longer deserves to be chosen.

If he keeps playing like he is right now he may very well end up playing his way on. The Ryder Cup is based on money earned and not FedEx cup points.

He's currently 23rd in Ryder Cup standings BTW.

Yeah, even sitting at 23rd and how well he’s played even back into the start of 2020 he’s worthy of a captains pick.

That’s based solely on his current form too
