Counterfeit golf equipment

Recommended Posts

Recently stumbled on wish.com and searched on golf.  They have Mizuno HMB irons for 300 bucks and Muira wedges for 100.  Assuming these are counterfeit.  Does anyone know? Also wondering other places to beware of for counterfeit gear.  I recently bought golf prides grips that were knockoffs on ebay.  They smelled terrible and were very poor quality.

There are a ton of threads on this subject, and about as many sketchy websites out there selling less-than-legitimate golf equipment.

The OEM's have pretty strict pricing guidelines that any reputable retailer has to follow - or risk losing their account. As a result, you don't see a lot of stellar deals on equipment released in the last 2-3 years. After that, you might find a liquidator or two that has some good deals.

Generally speaking, if the price is too good to be true - it really is. Buy used.

I like that quote. I'll have to remember that.

Which sites are reputable for used gear??  I've bought used golf sticks off ebay before and they seem fine.

Ebay can be hit or miss certainly, but not a bad place to scour for deals and rare treats. If you like XX shafts and premium equipment that some club ho has played for a couple of rounds, then the WRX BST is a good bet.

For me, Callaway Preowned has been very good. Most of my bag has come from that site. Global Golf generally has a good used selection as well. 2nd Swing is also another one to try out.

But, right now might not be the best time to be looking for used equipment. With COVID and everyone seemingly dying to play golf, stock is low and prices are high. Even folks willing to buy new and pay full retail are waiting weeks for their clubs.

I've had good luck with globalgolf.com  and callawaygolfpreowned.com

Callawaygolfpreowned.com is actually owned by Callaway and while most of their stuff is well, Callaway, they do have an "other brands" section.

I've heard 2ndswing.com is reputable but I haven't bought from them. I believe they are owned by CarlsGolfland.com.

Rockbottomgolf.com is another legitimate site. They sell new clubs but they have a used section on the site. I haven't purchased from them but they've been around a long time.

Hey hey the little “Among Us” plushies I got for my kid off Wish we’re not counterfeit. Unauthorized, bootleg, and likely vulnerable to numerous lawsuits.  But counterfeit? Now that’s just crossing the line.

Not so. They are completely separate companies. Carls does use 2ndswing for their trade in value guide.

There are plenty of legit grips on Ebay. I've bought dozens of Iomics, and two dozen No 1 grips from Ebay. All legit.

For any grips costing $10 or more, you can usually save 20%-30% on Ebay.
If you think you are getting $10 grips for $2, they're fake.

Couple of guys I came across when I lived there who clearly were making a “side hustle” off buying there and selling on Craigslist. Garages full of clubs, and they weren’t WRXers.

Not sure how profitable that could be, but speaks to savings at Pro Clubs.

If I was right handed, I would buy these to try for sure. $360 pay with PayPal, done.

Why would you buy fakes clubs? I've heard they perform poorly.

If you pay with PayPal and the aren't legit, they are free. I would love to try them to see if free clubs could compete with legit clubs.

If I could get them in lefty, it would be worth it to try. It's free if they are fake, if they are legit, they were $360/set vs $280/club.

From PayPal's website:

https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/paypal-safety-and-security

You're Protected If:

Your order arrives, but it's significantly different than it was described.

There are a variety of scenarios that meet this condition, for instance:

You received a counterfeit version of the item.
Example: You purchased a Rolex, but received a Faux-Lex.

So again, if you buy them with PayPal and they aren't legit, you will get your money back. If they prove to be legit, you got a set of irons for the price of one and a half irons.

That seems like a HUGE win/win situation to me. But they do me no good, because they don't make counterfeit lefties. 🤣

I'd be keen to understand how much evidence you'd need to provide PayPal in order to prove they are fakes. Any ideas? In theory it sounds good, but dealing with PayPal on disputes can be extremely difficult at best.

It's never been up to me to prove they are. Last time I bought sunglasses they were obviously fake. I sent pictures, they asked the seller for proof, I had a refund in less than a week.

Wish now has "certified authentic" items now because of a lot of fakes.

I'm not saying anybody should, I'm just saying if I could I would. 🤣

There are some fake MP-20 blades posted on marketplace here right now.  I can't call them Mizuno fakes because they don't have a badge on it, or anything else.  But for $350 Canadian it's a hell of a deal...

I took a flier on some T200s last year off the bay as I knew I was going to be covered via PP incase they weren't legit.  They were fake, of course...  All I did was tell the seller that they were and listed the 5 things that didn't pass the smell test when I was able to actually look at them and compare to real ones.  Snapped off some pics to add to the case file and was reimbursed within like 10 days.

Another one to back-up eBay.  Only suggestion is to do some homework before purchasing.  Look over the entire listing, description, pictures, & everything closely.  Even check over the sellers feedback.  The unhappy customer is 10 times as likely to make a post as the happy customer.

Two weeks ago received 2 dozen grips.  Instead of paying about $9 a grip before shipping, they were around $5.75 with free shipping.
