Callaway XR irons to Ping G425

I've been in a predicament for a while.  I've been using XR's for the past 4-5 years and it's one of the best clubs I've ever put in my bag.  Very very easy and forgiving and long.  If there's a negative it may be that it's almost impossible to hit a banana on command, but it's something I don't need that often.

 

I haven't got a chance of trying the Ping G425's, especially on the course.  But I had two sets of Pings in the past and they were so accurate that I miss that.  

 

My question is if apart from the model year the change is worth making.  Technologycally speaking I don't think these two clubs are so far away from each other, and I usually don't like trading a club I hit.  

 

So I'd like to hear from the guys who are into clubs and equipment.

I had some Callaway Steelhead irons which are similar to the XR's, and I currently play the 410 Ping's.  I think the Ping's are more forgiving on toe hits and the sole has more bounce so they are forgiving if you get steep, although the Callaway's aren't digging prone either.  When you catch the ball in the center of the face with the Steelhead's it flat out goes.  I flew a few greens with those clubs.  I've never experienced that with the Ping's, partly because I don't think they have as much spring face action going on.  

 

The stock Callaway shafts are descending weight whereas the Ping's are constant weight.  You may notice a difference in club feel because of this.  Needless to say you would do well to demo the clubs if possible before purchase.

I would agree with most of what Nessism said the Pings vs the Callys. I will however add that theres really not a lot of difference between the G410's and 425's (if you looking to save a bit of cash). LOL. 

He did however post a bit of disinformation regarding the Ping AWT shafts "The stock Callaway shafts are descending weight whereas the Ping's are constant weight."  

The stock Ping AWT 2.0's are ascending weight, hence the AWT designation. Meaning the shafts get a bit heavier in the shorter irons. They are not constant weights.

Okay, I'm busted about the AWT shafts.  Forgot about those.  Realize of course that Ping doesn't have a "stock" shaft though.  They offer up 8 different steel shaft options at the same cost, and all but the AWT's are constant weight (pretty sure anyway.)

Thanks for your feedback. I may even be going for the G410s.  I've heard there isn't too much difference save cosmetics and the price of the new G425s is considerably higher.
