Thoughts on the "How to hit a fade" video from TXG

I really have no sensation of needing to slam the face shut to prevent a block but it very well could be subconscious. I just have a complete inability to keep the clubface right of my path consistently. I'm a 2 handicap and hit it flush with a lot of speed but club face control is hard. I can change my path easily through setup and intent but the club face just seems to go along for the ride instead of staying neutral. For example - I can alter my path -10 to +10 (confirmed on Trackman) but whatever it is the face is always slightly more closed meaning I can never actually fade the ball. You are correct in that the way I shift my my path left is not ideal (gets steep) but it still should hit a fade or slice.

Have you tried a more open face at address?  Sound basic, but it seems that a lot of players never really commit to working with this

Kind of.

My right hand likes to hang closed (tight shoulders from lifting) so it's not easy to set it open. My normal grip is on the strong side of neutral (it's not that strong) and when I just let my arms hang naturally and relaxed at address the club is noticeably closed.

One way I've tried setting the face open at address is using a very weak grip but it causes all kinds of problems. I get wrist pain, loss of CHS (5-10mph with driver confirmed by many launch monitors) and inconsistent contact. It just feels terrible.

I've also tried to consciously keep my hands open with my normal grip but the club returns to a shut position by the top of the backswing  (bowed wrist and all that).

FYI - I've been having some success using the ideas from this video. Primarily the feeling of extending my right arm like I was releasing a bicep curl and trying to keep my right arm under my left to prevent the club from rolling over.

You said you get wrist pain when you use a weak grip ? So that’s why I suggested turning the club face open and then gripping the club  with your neutral / normal grip.

I use a very strong grip and hit a natural draw but fade the ball off the tee knuckle fade style where I open the face at address , then grip the club with my strong grip , aim left and then rip a draw swing and feel like I’m gonna hook it into the left trees and it produces a  long , powerful fade. Nothing in my grip or swing changes , I just rotate the face open and then grip it and swing my normal swing while aiming left instead of straight.

Look up the slice fixer knuckle fade.

Can someone help me with this a little?

I love this video and am already having a lot of success with my irons, but I am really struggling with my driver swing.

I am a long-time get stuck underneath, back shoulder dipping, save-it-late flipper who hits lots of blocks with an occasional beautiful push draw.  What adjustment should I make with the driver?

If I emphasize turning my back shoulder over my front foot to minimize dipping my back shoulder, I seem to hit straight pulls.  If I swing "normally" but concentrate on slapping the back of my right hand against my left thigh, I hit it straight but then it fades hard right.

Any thoughts?  Mucho gracias.

Sounds like the shoulder move has fixed path, but now you need to work on face angle. The right hand to thigh is the feel for an open club face. Instead of the back of the hand to the thought, try finding a position with the palm not facing so open that gives you the better face to path

OMG, this is gold. When I used to play my best golf, I had a super dependable fade. I'm a lefty and I rarely saw the right side of the course. I've been trying to get back to this for years but could never figure it out. I now have my swing plan for the year. Thanks for sharing.

The video is quite instructional. I always enjoy TXG when I do watch.

The only thing I have to add regards “Ball Flight Laws”. Every person is a bit different. If you understand your club path well enough, any type of shot should be possible, and towards that end, it’s better to insure a repeatable path then adjust accordingly.

I can somewhat shape the curvature of my shots pretty repeatably, but the flight is not perfect just like my normal shots. How much draw/hook and fade/slice is not easy to calibrate. Fortunately, I have never really found myself needing to curve right or left.

Unless you are a really good ball striker, I’d advise against purposely attempting different flights.

I have had similar struggles with driver and metals, an intent that has shown demonstrable results is one where I fire  torso to get right pec back to and pointed down at ball, asap. If I do that,  I  cannot crash trail shoulder and solid contact usually comes about.

My issue is that i have a two way miss, push left and hook right. When i had my fade action, i rarely missed right. I dont know how i got to this point, but over time my swing has gone too much from inside out as a stock motion. I can shape on demand either way when i want, but i have to get away from to the excessive inside out and timing of the flip as my normal motion. The swign thought of moving my hand path more towards my front thigh is key and you could literally replace Ian with me on that video. We have exactly the same issue, so thats why i though the video was gold. Someone else with different issues would not find it so.

This video has been gold for me as well.  Last time I hit balls I started to get a much better feel for using it and all of my misses were to the right which is what I want.  I've always struggled more with hook/overdraws with the longer clubs, like driver and 3W, and when they go left they go a long way left.  I even have the occasional drop kick that was mentioned with my driver.  Now I'm tucking my right shirt sleeve before every shot and really rotating the right shoulder while trying to feel the back of the right hand to the left thigh and getting a fairly repeatable curve right.  I feel like the video has given me a road map to get the kind of ball flight I have been looking for as in the past I couldn't count on it to repeat with any reliability.
