Stack and Tilt... here I come?

Recommended Posts

It been about 3 months since starting this thread and I have to admit that I have been playing less golf than I wanted (i have a 1 year old) but when I have been I have been implementing some of the S&T fundamentals.  There are days that I still go out and it takes a few holes of "what the hell am I doing" to realize that my weight is not forward and I'm steeply taking the club away instead of flatter and then i'm fine.  All in all, I'm extremely happy with how I have been playing.  Yesterday I shot a +3, 75 after not playing for 2 weeks.  Granted the course was only 6500 yards but frankly I still had to hit the shots.  2 of the bogeys were caused from trying to chip lower lofted wedges to run the ball to the hole when I should have just grabbed the 60 and properly chipped them.  The 3rd bogey was a 190yd par 3 where I pushed/faded/leaked my 4 iron to the right side of the green when the pin was all the way on the left.  An unfortunate 3 putt after almost completely missing the first one (putting and talking to my brother in-law at the same time isn't good for concentration).  It was certainly fun.  I have to practice with my irons more.  This was only the 3rd round since putting blades back in the bag so my ball striking was a little off, but in general not bad.

I don't know if S&T is necessarily a game changer like it was once advertised or if it is just a friendly adaptation on old school golf, but after looking back and seeing some of the greats (Hogan, Tiger, numerous others) with their weight a little forward, back leg a little straighter, and using the ground for speed (flex of forward leg to create a "squat" in order to push off the ground to create speed in rotation of club around core) I see that S&T may not be so foreign as some people perceive it to be.

It's working for me so far and playing better, hitting the ball farther with less misses, I'm going to stick with it.  I have found a way for me to play effortless golf with no pain and a lot less strain on my back!

Tiger and hogan did not and do not do stack and tilt.  Not even close.

I'm not saying they used that complete method, I was describing the weight forward straighter back leg portion of their swing.

Saguto is kind of fun to watch sometimes because he is such a character.  Hard to believe that he was shooting mid-90s (as he says) while working on his PGA certification.

I wonder if teaming up with Cogorno is to try to bring credibility to Saguto, or the other way around?

I'd say Corgono brings Saguto credibility moreso than the other way around. I'm seeing lots of these team ups lately between youtube gurus. I thought Saguto was annoying and obviously trying to be different just to get views but I've come around some. When I see him perform his swing it looks painful to me, but I've tried it and it works. I'm going to stick with it for awhile.

For those that switched, where did you start? I’ve only seen a couple of YouTube videos. There are a ton of them but I’m not finding a clear sequence of them.  Step 1, step 2,etc.

Did you purchase the S&T vidies or books?

Saguto has a site for $10 a month I believe that goes step by step

Only issue with the free stuff such as YouTube would be the lack of sequence.

Watch video one, practice and then move to video two, etc.

Simply put, what order should they be watched, practiced?

Tried stack & tilt years ago, and found myself leaning on it again this week after I shot an awful 58 thru 9.  Went out and shot a 40-45 two days later after falling back on some of my old S&T knowledge.

Every struggling golfer should become knowledgeable about S&T.  There is absolutely nothing wrong it and it's an exceptional good and simple swing for amateurs to learn to make this game more enjoyable for them.

Just knowing the stack & tilt principles is a wonderful fallback when you start struggling with contact.  I can only laugh out loud every time I see someone declare it dead.  It's ALIVE and WELL.

Not really any different for me. That stated, I do need to focus on “centered head” more so the longer the club gets.

How do you hit longer clubs w stack and tilt?  It works beautifully for shorter clubs but struggle with hybrids and up.

My irons are incredibly crispy when use this technique but struggle w long clubs.

You are over doing the tilt. Tilt, turn, extend. Keep hands on the belt line. Like all things nothing is absolute so find a working stack and tilt for u. I find if I don't have more weight on the front vs back foot I struggle with pure strikes. Again find your happy medium.

The longer the club, the more I have to feel like I flatten the shaft.

Correct but u can flatten and tilt and turn. It’s no one or the other.

Yes, I think I am getting the hang of it.

Played 9 today and driver was working remarkably well.

What feels strange is that the arms are NOT getting very high, but I am still able to generate a good amount of speed.

The swing feels really short (but it is generating what seems to be the same or more speed then my old swing, which was a very long , high hands swing).

Saguto is good, keeps it simple, Jess Frank is another youtuber who demonstrates S&T in a simple yet easy to understand format.

The best traditional S&T instruction on youtube/instagram is by Rob Cheney. Nick Taylor is very good as well.

I'm amazed at how much misinformation there is in this thread regarding S&T.

What S&T does promote:

Swing around body center, no sway

Transfer of weight to front during swing

Getting downswing in slot, hitting from inside

Engaging right side and using lower body for power

What it isnt:

Keeping all weight on left side

strains hips or lower back

discourages weight transfer

Frankly, most of what it teaches is what "modern" swing philosophy preaches.
