Scotty Cameron putter information

Hi guys!

 

I used to work at a golf course in, Sweden as a greenkeeper. 

 

When you work as a greenkeeper, you cant imagine what kind of golf equipment youll find on a daily basis, balls, broken clubs, bags left broken in the woods and so on.

 

A couple of years ago, I found a broken putter in a pond (no doubt the golfer missed a close putt and threw the putter in the water at hole 17!). Now to my question, it is a Scotty Cameron Newport, but it looks old, and I cant seem to find much information about it. Is it worth anything? Would it work to restore it?

 

Hopefully you guys can give me some answers, I would really appriciate it!

Looks like an Art of Putting Newport from 1998/1999 and was in the Oil Can finish when they first came out.  One of my favorite finishes that Cameron made.

The refurbish cost really depends on who does it.  There are a lot of companies out there now who do it.  NorCal I think is $175, Embrace is $185-ish, and I had a Pro Platinum finish restored by Kevin Kolbert in 2014 for $105 (I'm sure the price have updated since then, but quality was excellent).

It's definitely worth something, even without refinishing. SC putters have always been high, but they've taken off the last 12 months or so. I'd say as is you can easily get $150 for it, if not $200+.

 

As to refinishing, that also seems to have gone up over the years as many seem to be in the $150+ range. BOS is still out there for less than the ones listed above, and they're the ones that finished them originally, so they might be worth a look. But IMO you might get the best return reshafting and selling as is rather than refinishing and selling. Just my .02.

Damn, $150 for this beat up head alone? I know price of all golf related items went up, and I’m still surprised by how high Scotty fetches on the secondary market.

Got some tips of how to remove the rust/dirt without any chemicals and tried. I dont want to use anything that schratches the surface but it looks better now

It's definitely a Art of Putting Newport from 1998-99. One of the better looking putters Scotty made in my opinion, but besides being old there's nothing inherently rare or special about it that would give it unusual value. 

 

As is, it's probably worth $100-150. 

 

If you reshaft, regrip, and refinish it you could probably get around $500 or so. However, the work will cost you $200-300 and with the current demand I'm guessing at least a few months to complete all of that.

 

The question becomes, would you rather sell it now and make $150 or put some time/money into it and make $250?

I was basing it on him reshafting and throwing any random grip on it, but yeah. Putters have gone up quite a bit, even these 2 beaters, one with visible serious rust and another with off-center aftermarket site lines, both went for $200+. Not saying I'd pay those prices, but these went on bids so reasonable comps.

I'd send it to BOS Golf and have them put on the original oil can finish. then put a shaft in it, install your favorite grip and play it.
