What am I doing wrong? Advice needed!

Recommended Posts

Sorry, its not in slow motion but in this video I am hitting a 6 iron. When I start the downswing, I tend to lean down towards the ball and its almost like my shoulders get stuck. It looks like I have a slight over the top move because I am steep which causes me to lose my spine angle and stand up at impact. I have to alter my body position to be able to hit the ball. I've been really trying work on this and I cant seem to get rid of it.

What is causing this and how can I fix it?

Some guesses: Weight and balance? Over rotating in the backswing? Body is out of sync? Are my hips moving to quick in contrast to my shoulders? Am I not dropping my arms correctly?

Please let me know your thoughts, anything helps, thanks!

It would help to see a face-on view.

But it sounds like you've already diagnosed your problems. You get the club into some good positions but then from the top you have a sort of classic cast move. Your upper body takes over and you're too steep and you lose hip depth.

I'm not sure there is any way to fix this except to commit to some good drills that train you to keep your hip depth (or even increase hip depth), meaning keep your butt back and to the viewer's left on the downswing. And drills to shallow the shaft.

You have to re-train yourself on these correct movements. You can't expect that to happen overnight. I struggle with the same problems to a lessor degree and for me I just have to constantly remind myself to keep my hip depth and keep my head back. It helps to hit lots of range balls. Ideally half swings and slow motion where you re-hearse a squat and turn that keeps your butt back.

And if we could see a face on view you are probably releasing the club too soon (early extension). All of these things are related. But the good news is you will see almost immediate improvement in your ball flight and power on the range, when you start to keep your hip depth, shallow the shaft, and not early extend (as much).

It will just take time and with more and more time you will begin to feel comfortable and more confident in the changes.

Agreed with @straightshot7, and it does sound like you have already identified the core problem.

When your transition isn't synced up and you come over the top and steep, which you're doing, your body is forced to compensate, which is what you're feeling. If you didn't do something to compensate then that steep club path would lead to the head burying into the ground a foot behind the ball, so you are forced to stand up and lose your posture.

The fix then is to correct the club path, but in order to do that you need to address a few other things first. In order to shallow the club, your hands need to drop down instead of coming out towards the ball like they do now. The tricky part is that this movement isn't necessarily just a matter of doing something different with your hands as the bad hand path can be a reaction to a few different things, loss of hip depth being a big one that straightshot called out above:

The red line indicates the hip depth (distance of the hips from the ball) we establish at address and how that line related to our body throughout the swing and the red dot represents hand position, you vs. Adam Scott. Your photo isn't the best angle to show this so the problem may appear exaggerated slightly, but this is all still valid.

Focusing on the red line first, we see that the depth you establish at address starts reducing during the backswing. This is most commonly caused by your rotation being too left hip driven, meaning that you are achieving your rotation not by dropping your right hip back (good), but by swinging your left hip more out in front of you (bad). This will tend to pull you towards the ball and force an over the top movement due to loss of hip depth. We then see that play out in the downswing as your both your arms and your hips fire out towards the ball, pulling away significantly from the line established at address. Now we can can focus on the red dot and see how much your positions have changed around that. At impact, your right thigh is almost in the space your hands were at address, leaving them little to no room to actually return to a similar position. This obviously forces you to come down on a different plane because otherwise you might run into your own leg.

What we see with Adam Scott is the general template we want with short and mid irons. In the backswing, the right cheek stays on or slightly crosses the line established at address, and then the left cheeks does the same at impact. The hips have stayed back and allowed room for the hands to come down on plane, which we see with Adam's hands above crossing right through the red dot.

How you go about this will depend on your feel and where your problems are. The goal is the above though, keeping your pelvis back by feeling your hip move as your right hip dropping back as opposed to your left hip swinging out, then maintaining and rotating within that depth all the way through the ball. This gives the arms room to do their thing without needing to come over the top and allows you to maintain your angles through impact.

Agreed with everything @Valtielsaid

one thing you can do at home is just stand in your golf posture with a wall a couple inches behind your butt.

put your hands on your shoulders (no club required unless you want to) and just practice your backswing with your right butt cheek hitting the wall

both cheeks should be on the wall during the downswing - at impact just left cheek

And your left cheek/hip should remain on the wall through the finish

just practicing that enough times should help you to learn the feeling of keeping your hip depth

Sorry just saw this, but thank you all very much for your input. I agree with what you guys said. I’ve been trying to make a lot of swing changes recently. I been really working on trying to keep that tush line, and doing the “Tiger squat” move but its a tough task to do. Funny thing is my practice swing is perfect but as soon as I get to the ball I get steep. Also I noticed on the downswing I sometimes I tuck my right elbow to much causing me to get stuck. Were always trying to figure it out and chasing to get better. Thats why I love this game.
