When do you look at new fairway woods

Recommended Posts

I'm starting season 4 with my current 3W/5W. I just got a new driver (still finalizing shaft). I hit my current 3W and 5W pretty well, and they are great off the tee, but wouldn't mind perhaps a touch more forgiveness in the 3W with a slightly larger head (current F8+ is 149cc).

Been eyeing the SIM2 fairway (to match the driver), and sort of have the itch to just get the matching 3W and 5W to go with the driver.

What makes you decide to buy a new fairway wood?

I try to update 1/3 of my bag every year.  One year it’s wedges, the next it’s irons, the next it’s woods/driver.   Last year doesn’t count though, I may have bought new everythings.

I replaced my trusty ole' r7 ale 13* last year because I've had it for over 10 years and there were tons of scratches all over the face.  The head is tiny and the sweet spot small.  I got fitted for a SIM ti 15* w/Ventus Blue.  At first I was turned off by the enormous head but when I took it out to the range and course, I fell in love.  This thing is straight, easy to hit, launches high and covers the gap between it and my 2 hybrid.

In all seriousness though, usually when there is new tech that makes it easier to hit off the deck. I picked up Sim fairway woods earlier this year after resisting awhile just because I liked the V-Steel sole back in the day. Been a good decision so far.

When my current one, and it's identical backup, both break. Then I'll try to find another one just like them.

For me I try a lot of them. Thankfully with Worldwide golf I have 90 days and I seem to have a constant $300 credit. I used the same 3 wood for many years but kept searching for one to replace it. Finally found it with a Srixon ZX 13.5 this spring. I’m always looking even if I’m not really looking to buy. You never know when you’ll find the one!

nothing wrong with my current woods - and the rails really are awesome - though the clubs do tend to sit a touch closed, which is rarely a problem.

but I'm curious about v-steel and the sim2 FW to match the driver, and wonder how legit the v-steel is. and does it really work well compared to the cobra baffler rails?

and since I wouldn't want to break down my current clubs to re-use the shafts, each club would be pretty pricey...

Honestly... once you find a really goor fairway wood. Unless your going for a new one that really blows you away as far as looks and performance you shouldnt be looking for a new one... pretty hard to get one that fits so well. My dad has one from early 2000s a callaway... i tried it last round thinking how good could this still be... let's just say... its still really good.

For pros and scratch golfers: If they are longer hitters, they may hit a FW off the deck once a round. They just want something reliable (3W) that works. May tinker with 5W or 7W for certain courses, but 3W can often be "old faithful" club.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then there's mid-HDCPers like me. I will hit a FW off the deck 4-6 times a round, and maybe a couple of times from the tee.

For me, I switch when the current FWs don't work anymore, or a newer model gives me a performance boost. My history:

  • I played MacGregor MT 3W and 4W (persimmon head) from 1981 to 1994 (MacG stiff shafts). 4W was my best long club for the time.
  • Got fit for component irons and metal woods (D, 3W, 5W) and used the FWs (TT Dynalite S300) until 2001. OK FWs.
  • Switched over to low-profile Tour Edge Bazooka BetaTi 3W (14*) and 5W (19*) w/ lightweight graphite Grafalloy Stiff from 2001-2008. Really good era for FWs.

Circa 2007-2008: Redid entire bag, moving from Stiff to lighter regular shafts, and modern tech.

  • Got fitted for Calla HyperX Tour 10.5* driver in R-flex... thought OK go with X.Tour 3W same R-shaft... but... had trouble getting high enough launch on 3W. New truth: I can handle Tour or Pro head in driver but not in FWs. (Current EXS is special case)
  • Went with then-new TaylorMade RBZ FWs - first pair in my permanent move to 4W + 7W - but 48-gram shaft was too light and delivered lots of left misses.
  • Switched to Tour Edge Exotics XRail 4W + 7W. Reliable, but giving up distance (about 5-year stretch).
  • Got steals on Calla Alpha 815 FWs, 14* (set to 16*) and 20*. Worked for two seasons, but then they started getting heavy.
  • Next season: In-and-out battle between XRails and 815s.
  • Last year: Somehow found scarce Rogue 4W and added it. Straightened things out. Got new women's Rogue 7W for $100, had it reshafted, also good to go.

I think the Rogues will serve me well for next few seasons. Jailbreak tech really gives extra boost on OK-to-solid shots. Finally rebalances distance and control.

I seem to look every year.  It’s been this way ever since Adam launched the XTD Ti Superfairway back in 2012 and it’s been nothing but misery ever since. Before that I just hit Hogan Edge titanium hybrids because they went farther than fairway woods pre slot technology with the Adams.    I have settled this year on the STZ and plan on committing to it for the next couple of years if possible lol!

I buy a new driver every 3 years.  During the honeymoon period, it generally occurs to me that this driver is so much better than my last that the matching fairways probably would be, too.  Occasionally, it’s true.

Just replaced my 3w, which cracked.  It was from 2014.  Until recently, there just wasn’t a need.  I’ve hit other 3ws longer, but this was reliable and very consistent.  Just replaced it with a G425 set at 16.5* and I actually like it more which is saying a lot.

I've only ever changed fairways when they break provided I'm still hitting them well and they work with my game at the time.  When I played 904Fs I usually had 2 sets of 3w/5w with different shafts depending on what swing flaw...I mean changes lol i was making at the time.  Now it's simpler to make little adjustments with weight/head/shaft changes.  I recently broke my 3w and after testing a lot of others (and a lot of drivers because who needs a good excuse to get a new driver) I found a good deal on a exact replacement head for my broken one....guess the new stuff will continue to wait.

Loss of confidence/poor results/and or to fill a gap.

Been jumping around 3 woods for awhile, never in love with anything.

Have used various Exotics, Titleist 913/917 (really liked these), Cobra F9, RAD

Tried Ping (425) for the first time and wow - these work so well for me.  Did a fitting with these vs current fairway woods and these were heads and tails above the others.  Very forgiving, long, nothing bad to say about them.  Also added their 5 wood.   I think these will stay for a long time.

Every 20 years.  Just replaced my Sontartec from 2001 or so.  hahaha

This. The old Sony served me well up until last year, when all of us seemed to buy new stuff because of quarantine.

The "new" TS3 I'm hitting now tho... fuego. I'm such a club junkie though that I worry I might ho my way out of something that's actually a really good match for me, lol (tsi looks so money, ugh). But it's definitely hotter with less spin, and more forgiving low/thin on the face which tends to be my 3wood miss.

Good luck!

Had been gaming the '07 TM Burner TP for many years. It has a motore speeder 757 shaft that I won on here limited u.s. open edition 2/150. In fact, it was probably the longest tenured club in the bag until I went with the cobra f9 tour; mainly to add as a match to the f9 driver.

Both are great clubs. I have used them in tandem as the burner is 14.5 and can adjust f9 12-15 but currently in the honeymoon stage with the f9 so it's the gamer.

I love buying new clubs ... except fairway woods. I'll buy a new one when my Adams Fast 10 (from - you guessed it - 2010) breaks.

When you find a good fairway wood, you stick with it. That's what my pappy always used to say. Well, actually, he never said that. But it's still what I do.

For me I find 3/4 woods almost interchangeable as long as it's a decent match in shaft.  Used almost exclusively off the tee, so easier to change things out.
