Left Knee Discomfort (Right Handed Golfer)

Recommended Posts

Admittedly, I've hit a lot of balls recently and my left (lead) knee has been a bit tender over the past few weeks. I took 3-4 days off and before slowly getting back into it. For the first two sessions, I only hit 7 iron and lower, and I seemed to be doing ok. Then, eventually, I got back up to my 3-Wood and the discomfort came back in a minor, but noticeable way. I haven't hit Driver yet for this reason.

Describing the discomfort, I struggle to say "pain" because it's not anything major, but it's noticeable. It feels slightly tight and tender and I don't want it to get worse...

Just curious if anyone has had similar symptoms or experiences?

For reference, I'm only 34 years old and hit balls 3 days a week (or so) and play once (usually).

Ah... 34... I remember it. When you start getting the first taste of your body turning into a steaming pile of Rickie Fowler's commercials. This is your wakeup call not to let it get so bad that

If you're hitting off of mats, even with soft spikes, then that's likely the problem. When hitting off the ground, the soles of you shoes are almost flat on the ground and the spikes are somewhat embedded ito the ground. The ground gives way when you swing, but mats don't. The pain is usually on the outside of your left knee from hitting off of mats.

If you're not hitting off of mats, then I'm not sure.

Might want to try rolling over your left foot on your follow through and then if that’s not enough twisting your foot/ankle left so the toe is pointing towards the target at the finish. Takes a while to do consistently but will lessen the torque on your knee.  Fixed the same problem for me.

Surprised this move isn’t advocated for more.  Helps with hip turn and sliding as well.

It's interesting, I think I actually feel it on the inside of my left knee. So the right side of the left knee.

But yes, I do hit off mats all the time. I wouldn't even know where to go to find a grass range. Do you think wearing regular running sneakers would be better than my golf shoes (which are, as you said, soft spikes/spikeless)?

Thanks! Do you have a specific tutorial video you like for these?

I have a torn meniscus and a cyst that has developed in the upper part of my knee.  Got an MRI back in January and doc said not to worry about it for now.  I can still do squats in the gym and all the other leg/lower body exercises.  I have to wear a knee sleeve/brace whenever I'm in the gym or out on the course/range.  I would recommend at least considering getting a knee sleeve/brace.  Nothing too clunky or expensive.  Just something that can give your knee some stability.

This is your wakeup call not to let it get so bad that you're eventually shilling nuggets with the hamburgler.

Back off the balls for awhile, stop hitting off of mats, evaluate whatever else you can improve in your daily ergonomics, and if you're not in good shape then get there...

BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

In all seriousness though, stop hitting balls for awhile if it's nagging. At 34 it will probably go away on its own and hopefully never come back.

Wear flat sole sneakers or shoes and the pain will go away faster. After that, you shouldn't have the problem again.

The sides of your knee is where the LCL are.  If you experience pain there, it's concerning but not too worrisome.  Rest, ice and some anti-inflammatory meds for a couple days max would be ideal.  You may have just tweaked your LCL a bit.  It's unusual to hurt or tear your LCL but it does happen.

Thank you all for your advice, everyone. I'm going to pause hitting balls for a week or so and probably just chip and putt. I just got my new wedges in the mail, anyway...might as well start rusting those Taylormade Raw Faces!
