Snap Hook vs. Slice. What's worse?

Recommended Posts

I've been fighting a nasty snap hook the last few years, mostly with the driver, but sometimes with irons as well. Before I developed that, I had a big slice that gave me fits. And honestly, I wish I could go back to those days. The big slice didn't drop like a rock out of the sky like the hook. What are others thoughts on this (unfortunate) conundrum?

You can play for your slice, as it's generally a consistent shot.  The snap hook is random, and I'm not sure you could play for it even if you knew it was coming.  I'd take the slice.  But if your options are consistent slice or infrequent snap hook with straight drives otherwise, then I'd probably opt for the occasional snap hook.

My miss is the snap hook.  I do this when I get lazy with my hips and they don't or hardly rotate on the down swing and my hands take over and shut the face.  OB all day.  I'd take a slice any day.  You can talk to a fade/slice but a hook will never listen.

I feel like a snap hook driver should be all but gone from the game now with the sweet spots on today’s drivers so high on the face and the emphasis on catching the ball on the upswing. I don’t see how, if a player is paying attention at all, that the ducksnort is still a thing. But I still sneak one in too and it’s way worse than the right to right pitch out slice.

So what did you change to go from a big slice to a snap hook ?

Hitting (more) up on the driver can "cause" the snapper.

One can concentrate so much on hitting up that one leaves their weight back. Weight back often equals left and left (for righties of course).

The other thing I find that causes snappers is trying to hit the driver too easy. I don't shift my weight and or turn my hips enough and my arms outrace the lower body - left and left.

I left the club face open due to a cocked lead wrist. I corrected this but now snap hook it more often than not. I've read that this is caused by the club getting caught behind me. I make a point to rotate fully through the swing, but still cannot get rid of it. I'm a mess I know 😂

Snap hook is the absolute worst. No forgiveness in that shot at all.

Neither are good.

However, the result of either depends on what kind of shot that you were aiming for at the time it happens is the key thing.  I can survive a slice if I aim for a fade unless it's a big block slice. Same thing with a draw/ with a snap hook result. When you get the horrible double cross is when things turn disastrous generally.

Your fix might be exacerbating your problem. You need to feel closed for longer to create space for the arms. When they're in the slot you can then rotate hard without a hook.

Yep.  Most important thing with hitting up on the ball is getting to your left side period.  I have always said that the worst shots happen when the lower body isn't active enough on the downswing.

As someone that has, at various points, struggled with both push fades and snap hooks, I'll take the former.

IIRC Trevino said "You can talk to a fade but a hook just won't listen".

The same false equivalency a previous poster and yourself made.

Opposite of fade is draw. Opposite of slice is hook. 🙃

The snaphook would be my choice of the 2 on a hole where the left and right miss is equal. The slice usually goes up in the air and travels a long way, while the snapper will dive down and get on the ground faster.

Hmmmmm,,,,,,, I'm not sure.

While that slice does go further at least it sits when it hits.

That ground hook seems to run forever,,,,,,,,,,,,, :classic_laugh:

Good point. Although up here in the northeast it's been a long time since I've played in dry conditions. Can't remember what it's like to have a ball run out more than 5 yards.

Isn't it the usual golfer's journey though:

1. Let me gab that big stick and swing like a mad man... OTT -> slice time...

2. Let's swing faster like the pros do; they hit it straight... -> right of the planet

(most ams stop there)

3. Damn, how does that freaking swing work?... let me read the complete internet to figure it out

4. Ah, 'shallowing'... easy enough: think DJ and bowed wrist, external rotation of the trail shoulder, think waiter position, drop the arms, pressure shift forward, hold the angles, clear hips / rotate hard, follow-through low and left... (and that's just a snippet of the 5,438 possibilites)...

5. Yeah that works; nice little draws...

6. Let's push the enveloppe a bit... let's really hit up on it and let's clear like Rory or Collin, man they're open like crazy... 68 ballerina; stall-flip -> snap city baby!

7. Damn, let's try and go back - a powerfade, now that seems interesting

8. Rinse and repeat... I must be the worst 6cap on the entire planet...

The accuracy of this is incredible.

I'll have to make note of that. I feel like I definitely start rotating too quick. It's gonna feel weird at first, but hopefully I get the hang of it
