Would you rather see older tour vets or young guys win?

Great win for Cink. He just outplayed everyone that week. Generally, just want to see great golf and don't really care who wins, but I was rooting for Watson in 2009 Open.

I don't really care who wins.  I'll admit that it's nice to see guys win that haven't won in years, or new guys get their first few wins.  There are some guys that come across as just all-around good guys that I root for and others that come across the opposite that I'd rather not see win.

As someone in their 40s myself , yes I do root for the older guys when they are in contention. It lets me know I can compete with the younger guys at my club when I'm on.

Otherwise I root for the more humble or what I perceive to be the good guys.

Old golfers are like classic rock bands.  Sure I'd like to be there when they play well.

I'm indifferent toward Cink, but I do like to see the older guys win from time-to-time just to prove that it's still not just a 'bomb and gouge' game.  But what I really want to see is another competitor like Tiger who competes every week and doesn't just hang on to not lose at the end.

It’s nice when the more experienced players win, because often the have a story that comes with it. Whether it’s tragedy or loss of form etc. It gives us more insight in to who they are as a person. And can make them more relatable as you have shared part of their journey.

 

They won’t be there forever though. The players I grew up watching are either not playing competitively anymore, on the senior tour or no longer with us. 
 

But I really like some of the younger players, they are fearless on the course but also speak so well off of it. It’s been really refreshing.
 

It’s nice to have both, and amazing that the game still affords us this. But there is nothing wrong with having a few “heel” type characters of any age. There are still a few older players who fall in to this category for me.

I started to watch golf in 87 so it was Seve & Greg Norman mainly. I then moved on to David Duval.

I wasn't getting at who "deserves" to win.  I am simply inquiring if someone prefers seeing the vets or younger players win.  And far too often in professional golf does the guy who I feel "deserves" to win actually does that week.

That is really cool. I have not really checked out much of Greg Norman. He is too often talked about for what he did not accomplish rather than what he has accomplished.

Greg Norman drove the ball farther and straighter than anyone for years.  With an old Eye-O-Matic X100 steel shafted(tipped 2”) persimmon driver and high spin ball the first half of his career.

Ironic that Cink winning inspired this thread when he got in the way of what would have been the greatest instance of an older guy winning a tournament by pipping Tom Watson to The Open.

With the exception of Matt Kuchar, I would love to see an older player (over 40), who's come close in the past, win his first major.  Guys like Poulter (8 top 10s in majors) or Westwood (19 top 10s!) or Snedeker (9).  There's something about an older athlete reaching for "glory's last shot" that is very appealing.
