Personal Launch Monitor...anyone gone down that road?

Son is 14 and his distances are all over the place. I guess it is that time.  Been thinking of taking the plunge as the personal ones are around $500.  Not cheap but at least it is doable.

Anyone suing them and have you found they are worth it?

Thanks

Chris

We have an ES14 and enjoy it. It is accurate enough and we keep up with his distances well. Key thing with the $500 ones is don't think they are perfect but they do the job well enough. Personally, it is a good investment in my opinion.

I am not suing anyone.  There is another thread where there is possible libel and it is hot.  Staying out of that one.

I have a Mevo and the SC200.  They are both decent units to get Clubhead speed and Ball speed.  The Mevo will give you spin, launch and etc.  I believe the Mevo works much better outdoors than indoors.

I have heard good stuff about the Rhapsodo.

I think if I were purchasing brand new I would take a hard look at the SC300 and Ernst Sports ESB1.

In the end if I really was going to make a purchase would probably end up being the Mevo+.

We have the Mevo+ ($2K).  Seems to work pretty well. On occasion, will miss a shot. On occasion, the data it reports back may not match what you saw.  I would say that is less than 2 out of 100 shots.  However, if you make a good swing and make a good strike at the ball, the numbers seem to be pretty fair. We use ours at the range.

If I had $4K, I would be very interested in this one:  https://www.fullswinggolf.com/kit-pre-sale/

If you want to stay $500 and below, the regular Mevo seems to be well regarded.

I agree we have the mevo+  and while it has issues it defiantly accurate enough for practice sessions.  I wasn't a believer but was told I needed something and now feel it was a good purchase.

The biggest complaint I have is you have to make sure it setup correctly.  That will be an issue with any launch monitor though. The more you pay the easier the setup is from what I can tell.

The regular mevo for under $500 really is a good investment. It doesn't have all the data of the Mevo plus but if your not looking for some those extra features it work just fine.

I had the mevo+ early on. That thing is crazy or was for me. I know a lot have it now and it seems a lot more accurate than it was but very highly reported to have very high spin numbers on drivers. . The basic mevo to me best bang for your buck. Gives you more data parameters allows for changing sea level. Won't show you flight but if you are outside pointless. I have used it inside to get very similar numbers as outside. Plus they log everything into a portal.

Skytrack might be a better unit for accuracy than mevo+ right now. GC2 or the new full swing would be the accurate way to go. Just depends on the budget you have in mind.

We've had a GC2 setup in the garage for a few years.  Depends on plans for it in my opinion.  If its a hitting that will never leave, then a GC2 or Uneekor might be an option.

Honestly have a skytrak first I would stay away from that POS.  The Mevo+ is slightly better, but again what are you trying to get out of it.

The kids still have  a Mevo Gen 1.  We got it at $400.  Son is usually interested in back spin and ball speed.

We have compared it to the GC2 and its within -/+ 3-5.

Like the old saying if you want a trackman then buy a trackman.

Same shot different LM.

GC2 is the LCD.

I purchased a Mevo for outside range practice and sold it after 4 months last week. It was solid with premium balls and with range balls (I calibrated it to 1,000 feet above sea level using 8 iron carry) it was really close. I even put it up against a trackman and it surprised me (premium balls indoors with a 20 foot depth from ball to net). It was great for wedges, partial shots, and flighting the ball. Once I nailed down carry distances, I went to work on launch angles and ball height. That trajectory piece was the biggest game changer for me. It did its job, and I accomplished what I needed.

Surprisingly, it held its value and I sold it for what I paid for it minus selling fees so I feel like I rented it. If I go down that road again, I would definitely buy the Mevo Plus for the additional features especially if using it indoors where you cannot see ball flight curvature.

Agreed.  The Mevo Gen 1 is nice for us outside cause you can see the curve yourself.  Then it's just a matter or ball speed, distance, and back spin.

The range balls as you guys know typically are two piece, so usually less spin and more distance.

If we go to the range.  We might scoop up some balls that are mixed in and use those.

We use the GC2 with TGC 2019 and GSpro indoors.  Nice being able to play "almost golf" during the cold months.  The son basically wants to ensure his numbers are still mapped during the winter months.  He gained 20 Lbs and grew 3 inches from October to now, so that increased his numbers slightly

A friend got out the Rhapsodo the other day at the range and I hit a few balls on it. I love the feedback of using your phone camera, you get a replay and data after every shot. Really nice to be able to see why the shot went the way it did and have some data for reference.

My friend mentioned some small complaints: he has had it turn off for no reason mid-session, and the occasional mis-read or no-read. His comment was "I'd maybe wait until V2.0"

If the regular mevo and the rhapsodo (both in the $500 price range) give the same data points, I'd edge the rhapsodo based on the video/shot tracker.

Also for anyone seriously interested , No Laying Up had a discount code for $75 off the rhapsodo

Only thing we use the Mevo on the range for is to get club head speed.  Pretty useless otherwise with range balls.  We will use the Mevo a lot on the course.  Ball Speed and Spin numbers relate better when using competition ball.

One thing with the mevos as well is the ability to use the video of the phones.  We took several video like this of say a LW, 8, 5, 3w and Driver.  Chop it into a 2 minute video for recruiting purposes.  With editing software you can overlay what club it is, but its more useful in my opinion that the video that just of some kid pounding the range for minutes or the 10 min slo mo.

We have a Rapsodo, it is not perfect when hitting into a net. On the range it is better, but range balls typically are not that good so the data is not perfect there either.

A good investment for sure, my daughter will use it and when I get home my phone syncs and I can see her shots.

My daughter gets obsessive over it, claiming that it has her distances wrong and so forth when using on the net. So she starts swinging out of her shoes to get the number up, I don't mind that in that swinging hard is important. When she gets too upset about the readings I tell her to look more for consistency than the actual numbers. I.e. if it is giving you a consistent launch angle and ball speed over 5 shots, even if it is 10y short of where you think it should go, that is still a valuable data point.

We also use it on the course, it is easy enough to use that you can set it up on the tee box, have everyone hit, and by the time we have driven to our balls I can have the shot video with info and tracer sent to the other players in the group via text. That is pretty fun when you are playing with friends, you can set it up on cool tee shots and send out the results in the group text.

Thank you so much for all of the help.  My son will be using this on the range so that means crappy range balls. Just trying to feel out if it is worth it to get consistent readings.  I guess the distances will be off but if it is consistent then maybe it is worth it.

So at my home course which has high quality range balls it wasn't an issue. At other courses with low quality balls it was a different story.

Just ordered a mevo+ to dial in distances.  Plan to use it in the backyard and range.  I will report back once we have some time with it.   Appears they are backordered for a few weeks direct from flightscope.   I know a few local juniors who have them and love the unit.

I would cancel.  Ask @darter79about it.  He sold his because the numbers were off.  Someone was screen shotting me numbers today of their kid and I will tell you, the numbers are off.  Your basic swing speed is correct, but other than that I don't trust much else.  Ball speed, aoa, spin, all off.

Others have had good luck but I never trusted it. The numbers even comparing to the basic mevo was off you would think the product they make would be the same. The basic mevo is a way better product.  There is numerous issues with spin on drivers. AOA being incorrect along with smash factor. Not something I would be a lot of faith in.

Well lets see.  I've been in contact with the marketing director.   If numbers are off I will return it.  I have access to a trackman as well so I an do some comparing.

They needed something to compete with Skytrak.  Not saying Skytrak is that reliable.  The price point is at a 2K buy is right for alot of folks.

What I was told from one of my nerd golfing buddies is that 10 years ago the Mevo+ would have gone for 10 grand or more.  The technology in it is really good.  Seems though that something isn't right with the unit.

The technology is good.  The application of it I think is still lacking with Flightscope.  Their tour model is basically the same technology just smaller.

Its hard to get honest reviews on the internet about the units.  I can tell you I am in a discord server with 350+ members. Most folks are looking to get out of their Mevo+ for sim golf.  The chipping and putting just cant compete with a quad or GC2.

For indoor simgolf I would use a GC2 or Quad everyday and twice on Sunday.
