Is this what golf was like in the 90s?

@ChipNRun Your post scratches the surface but doesn't reflect the greater reality.  European Travel had squat to do with the tour back then, as only a few notables crossed the pond, and mostly for exhibition events.

Then many tour guys shared cars from motel to motel, event to event, even Hogan. Yep JN and AP and Trevino, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, and a few others were all in limelight, GOATs of the time.   They were talked about while others that played in the same events, like my uncle, were unknowns, didn't like the limelight, but simply not good enough.  The games earlier stars like Sarazen and Hagen even Boros were few in numbers and fading when JN, AP and the others were lighting the skies.  They were GOATs then and still by golf standards, today, seen as great.

It's not the tour or the volume of players, but the lack of desire to be a GOAT.  Plus they make so damn much money hanging around the top 50, they are not hungry.  When someone that isn't money motivated makes 1M a year or more he's loses motivation to WIN.

Lunacy. Really deep field, golfs in a great place. Tiger is just the GOAT.

See, this was my question since I didn’t watch golf in the 90s.

It seems golf was awesome back then with some great personalities and brilliant players.

Faldo, Seve, Norman, Payne. Daly was out there in 95. Ernie too.

Lots of excellent talent showcasing crazy skills.,Norman driving, Seves short game, Faldos accuracy and mental discipline.

But nobody with the full repertoire of skills and extra gear to dominate on a sustained basis.

For example, if Rory could putt and wedge  like Tiger, how dominant would he have been?

If Bryson, with his distance and clutch putting, had a wedge game?

If DJ....well DJ just DJ 😊

Or take Spieth. He dominated with just a great ability to score. Imagine if he had more firepower in his ball striking?

Someone's probably still dominating at your golf course.

True, professional golf ain't what it used to be, but real golf still is. Go beat everyone in your foursome, or league, or club/course tournament. Be the local GOAT!

Tiger's win percentages for his career are off the charts insane. If you compare someone to tiger in his prime they're pretty much all going to look insufficient, jack, hogan, nelson, anyone included.

Local GOAT.

That should be a t shirt 🙂

I think golf was great in the 90s! In fact, because of TW, it was the most impactful decade in the history of the sport!

Some great players, who wore their hearts on their cuffed sleeves. Tiger was basically an annoyance, until it was so obviously clear that he was an all time great (this happened at Medinah in 99).

Yeah, I remember the 90s golf fondly. Great Ryder Cup feuds. Seve was present. Monty was great. Loved those guys.

And.. we got Sega Genesis “PGA Tour”. I, II, and 96! Fantastic video games.

Nelson had a better winning percentage during his streak

Tiger is great but not the only top golfer ever

Nelson was an assassin...absolute killer

though Nelson’s sample is too small, he is with tiger and jack in my personal trinity

The 80's were great, jack was still relevant up to a point, Tom watson won quite a few majors, Faldo was coming good and of course you had Seve at his peak

90's Norman pretty much dominated with Price up to a point, but Norman couldn't do it in the majors, then the late 90's came along and you had Tiger, Duval, Els, then from 99 Tiger just took over

Norman had 13 top tens in the majors in the 80s, including the "Saturday Slam" in 1986...he had 15 top tens in the 90s.

He was the biggest star for nearly 20 years...

And who here doesn't enjoy his instagram account these days!

So you’re comparing a 30 tournament streak to a career?

Nelson also won 50+ times in in career less than half as long as Woods

Also drove between tourneys with  no coach, no trainer , no chef, no yacht and no zillions of $$ in endorsements

Talking about Tiger and Jack both in their primes. Nothing will ever be more impressive than this.

Here are all of Jacks finishes in majors from 71-75. Order is Masters, US, British, PGA.

71. 2, 2, 5, 1

72. 1, 1, 2, 13

73. 3, 4, 4, 1
74. 4, 10, 3, 2

75. 1, 7, 3, 1

5 years, 20 Majors, 6 wins. 4 seconds. 17 top 5s and only 1 round out of the top 10. Not too shabby.

I know Tiger has more majors over a 5 year stretch but I would be shocked if he was in the top 5-10 near as often.

You didn’t answer. I never said Nelson wasn’t great. But he wasn’t woods.

Should Tiger have walked to all his tournaments?

A few years ago the sportswriters were abuzz with this idea. Some suggested that players who didn't have any wins or so many 10s after five seasons would move aside for new players.

PT, did the PGA Tour ever come up with any possible scenarios for implementing this?

What's In The Bag (As of April 2023, post-MAX change + new putter)

Greg Norman spent 4 years atop the OWGR in the 1990s and ~6 years total...and that's not dominant?

What DJ has done over the last six years ago is by definition dominant.

You're a lunatic if you think you have to match the accomplishments of Jack or Tiger to be labeled dominant...those guys are generational. They are the two best of all time. They transcend what it means to be dominant.

Norman was really good, as talented as anyone in tour history physically.  He could be tough, but he could also collapse. He was a bit like Phil but collapsed more often. If he had Tiger or Jacks brain he would have won 20 majors. It’s funny Phil was never #1 but overall a much better winner than Norman. So you need to realize if Normans prime intersected with Tigers Norman likely would have never been #1, and if he was it would have been maybe a few months like Duval.

The 90s was amazing!! I'd much rather watch John Daly hit bombs with a cig in his mouth or pop collar Phil.  Definitely beats watching Popeye play a 5 hour round with a compass.  Also side note a skinny kid from Stanford started playing on tour. Wonder how tf his career turned out?Tiger Woods gave Phil Mickelson grief for practice round dress shirt
