Fairway woods- same weight & flex as your driver?

PingPoncho

Recommended Posts

My fairway shaft is always 10-15 grams heavier. It’s personal preference though. The fairway head is heavier and I find it’s too head heavy with the lighter shaft but some people like that feel. I like the weight to be more balanced grip to head.  Best to try what you prefer the feel of.

I changed my driver shaft to a heavier one when I cut an inch off it. I am now using the same shaft in my driver as my 3 wood. The shaft weight helped me with the feel and the heavier shaft got the swing weight to something more realistic.

I’m not your typical WRX player.

67 years old driver swing low to mid 80’s, the shafts I play are very lightweight and get slightly heavier throughout.

A couple of things to consider, physics and personal:

Physics: All things equal, many golfers prefer to have a FW shaft that is heavier (starting weight) than their driver shaft. The reason: A driver shaft is usually a couple of inches longer. The length plus the extra swingweight from the length would make the driver feel heavier. Example below:

  • Driver: Mamiya Elements Wood 50 shaft F4-S / 59 grams: (46-3 = 43" trimmed)  0.93 x 59 grams = 55 grams net
  • 3W: Mamiya Elements Wood 60 shaft F4-S / 68 grams: (46-5 = 41" trimmed)  0.89 x 68 grams = 60.6 grams net

From a pure physics standpoint, this is why a player might want a heavier FW shaft than driver shaft.

Personal: Physics aside... surprise ... not everyone swings their driver the same way they swing their FW. A lot of this has to do with feel. Someone who jumps on their driver but gently strokes the FWs might want driver shaft the same weight.

Physics or feel? Let's invoke WRX Law #2: go with what works for you (and is still legal...)

My approach is roughly:

Driver - 60g stiff

Fairway - 70g regular

hybrid - 80g regular

irons - 95g regular

That said I've got a few stragglers - 3H and 3W in stiff. But I find I prefer a bit heavier as I go down the bag. Of course regular and stiff aren't universal measurements so ymmv.

For me, my 4wd shaft is heavier (71g-S) because it's shorter, and I don't often swing it as fast as my much lighter weight (59g-S) driver shaft.  Then there's my 2 iron shaft at 90g-S.

But there is NO standard.  Just what is common among better golfers.

Usually 10g heavier from driver to FW for me, but not this time (both at 60g) and I have not had any swing issues.

I play a Mitsubishi MMT 60 in X-Stiff in my driver that I think is 68 grams and a Matrix Black Tie in 6M4 in Stiff that is 64 grams.

When I put in my driver order, I actually ordered it at 60 and Stiff, but the shaft was X-Stiff when I got it.  Feels really good to me on the course!

I’m not too particular about it but there is a general trend.

Driver target is low 60s at 44.5”, irons ~100-110 at std length, fairways and hybrids fall generally along the slope of that line.  General profile needs to be ‘medium’ tip stiffness (e.g., Blueboard, S+, AD-DI, Modus 105, etc) and flex is generally not that important.

More people can benefit from an X-Stiff than the perception says out there. Its really just all how it works for you, and mostly what kind of tip action you need out of your setup

My swing speed is RIGHT on the edge between X and Stiff and typically when I've been fit for a driver I've gotten mixed results (Nike Covert 2.0 was X Stiff Kuro Kage, 2016 M2 was HZRDUS Yellow 6.0) and neither of them translated well on the course.  I was fit into the Tensei Blue in X this time, but needed to switch because of backorders.  Decided to go the MMT because it was super close to the Tensei and I actually tested it when I was fit.

Its really interesting how everyone immediately corresponds swing speed to flex profile. Its just not the case. Focus on what flex works best for your transition and tempo. Swing speed can pretty much be ignored. Yes faster generally need a stiffer tip, but that doesnt ALWAYS mean a stiffer shaft, sometimes it just means a different profile.

thats the brainwashing that goes along with the "fitting process" at most big box stores that gets regurgitated all the time...the industry has really been effective at mis-educating the average conumer....all for huge profits I might add

  • 1 year later...

Okay, need advice, I'm playing a G425 7 wood with the Alta diztanza 40g shaft, which I love and hit great, my G425 max 10.5 driver has alta CB 55 regular shaft,

I'm hoping to get the G425 3 Wood, but none of the retailers here have the alta diztanza to try with it, would I be okay going with it as custom order, all bit new lads so appreciate the help

Thanks
