Tee Height Rollback

Why has limiting tee height not gained more traction in the distance debate? While players are obviously much faster, they are optimizing their launch and spin so much with these massive tees.

I remember in the Payne Valley event JT brought out his "bomber tee" which was 4+ inches, and I know bryson uses a massive one as well. I imagine a max 1" tee height or something like that would not allow someone like bryson to be using a 4 degree driver.

Additionally, this would have the least amount of impact on the OEMs, golf in general, and is easy to implement. Not a bad place to start.

Thoughts?

Because it makes no sense at all, although there was a very lengthy thread on this very recently.

They'll all just wear flats.

And a handful of players does not a problem make, nor is it really a problem.

Yep.  They’d just learn to hit it 0.0 aoa  ala tiger with a fade.  He tees it that low on purpose and still flies it.

it would limit distance somewhat.  But what you’d then find is 8-10 degree “3 woods “ coming out.  Because at 1 inch tee height you can get an upward strike with a 3 wood size head.  Might as welll just bifurcate and require driver heads to shrink.  Which id vote for

There's already a huge thread on this topic:

Personally I'd rather see different avenues or nothing done at all.

The last few generations of Steel headed drivers were easy to hit from the deck. So we’re the first few generations of Titanium drivers. Shallow the face and move the CG and not much changes. Apart from you might see a driver hit off the deck a bit more often.

I had some idea that the maximum tee peg length is regulated per USGA.

Am i mistaken?  Chi-chi favored a golf pencil and hit the ball off it high and far.

It is, 4" is the maximum.

Short tees rule would be about as effective as countermeasures against computer hackers. Might be effective for a few months, but then some pro or some tour van guy would come up with a way around it (like shallow-headed drivers others have mentioned).

What's In The Bag (As of April 2023, post-MAX change + new putter)

Driver:  Tour Edge EXS 10.5° (base loft); weights neutral   ||  FWs:  Calla Rogue 4W + 7W

Hybrid:  Calla Big Bertha OS 4H at 22°  ||  Irons:  Calla Mavrik MAX 5i-PW

Wedges*:  Calla MD3: 48°... MD4: 54°, 58° ||  PutterΨSeeMore FGP + SuperStroke 1.0PT, 33" shaft

Ball: 1. Srixon Q-Star Tour / 2. Calla SuperHot (Orange preferred)  ||  Bag: Sun Mountain Three 5 stand bag

    * MD4 54°/10 S-Grind replaced MD3 54°/12 W-Grind.

     Ψ  Backups:

  • Ping Sigma G Tyne (face-balanced) + Evnroll Gravity Grip |
  • Slotline Inertial SL-583F w/ SuperStroke 2.MidSlim (50 gr. weight removed) |

Just get rid of clubs altogether and have the players throw the ball.

Actually though, I wouldn't mind a shorter tee.  Better than changing the clubs.

this would unfairly benefit people who have strong arms, and who work out in order to throw the ball further.

As i have said for years, i am in favor of not holding tournaments at all, and just letting the players imagine how well they are doing, and then declaring a different person the winner every week to provide perfect equity.

Sounds like the Tour is kind of letting 10 players do that now!

That is kind of the idea, hit at 0.0 instead of 3-5 up. I would not consider tiger a part of what people are classifying as the current distance problem. It would be the likes of Rory, Bryson, etc.

FWIW I don't have an issue with the distance, but if people want to reign it in I would much rather do it this way then through bifurcated balls or drivers. Maybe it would be pointless idk

Would make no difference. If I set up my driver a little different spec wise, I can hit it just as far at 1-2 down as I can at 2-3 up.

Didn’t they just play a major on a course where just about every player can reach every par 5 in two? ANGC had very light rough, as well. The winning score was -10, and they didn’t use short tees. When Faldo quits shilling for a shoe company that says they can add distance, then I might listen to his short tee theory.

So would you limit the length of the tee or the actual height of the ball above the ground?  If it's tee length, what's to stop a golfer from making a little mound of dirt an inch or two high in the tee box and then placing a one inch tee on top of the mound.  If it's height of the ball off of the ground, what a nightmare to regulate.  Horrible idea.

The whole distance issue is lame IMO.  Yes, the guys hit it farther than ever, but you still have to get it in the damn hole in the fewest strokes possible to win the tournament.  Is Bryson winning every single tournament because of his prodigious distance?  Didn't think so.  Sure it helps by having less club into the greens, but as the saying goes, drive for show, putt for dough.  Live and let live is my motto on this topic.

Except Im not asking anyone to take MY word for it. I think its just possible a 6 time major winner knows a little more than me, you, or anyone else here

Is it possible he's addressing a problem that doesn't exist? I know I don't anything, but who knows? I didn't know that winning 6 majors makes you an intellectual, I thought it meant you were better at golf than other players 6 times.
