Epic Max LS worth trying?

I've tested almost every driver out there this year with the exception of a select few...

Drivers Tested:

Ping G425 Max

Ping G425 LST

Cobra Radspeed

Titleist TSI3

Titleist TSI4

Taylormade Sim2

Currently only 2 are still in the running. Radspeed with Ventus Black 6x and TSI3 with Tensei 1k 60TX

I have Smoke Green TX that has a Callaway adapter on it...anyone out there truly think the Max LS is worth giving a shot? I get good numbers with that shaft and the Mavrik SZ but the ball speeds are much slower than the others.

Titleist TSR2 - TPT Nitro 16lo
Taylormade SIM Ti 3w - Tensei 1k Black 85tx
Taylormade SIM Ti 5w - Fujikura Ventus Black 9x

Cobra Tec Hybrid 2 - Kai'li 90tx

Cobra Tec Hybrid 4 - Aldila Tour Black 105tx
Srixon ZX5/ZX& Mkii 5-PW - Project X 6.5

Callaway Jaws Raw 50s, 54s, 58z - BGT ZNE 130

Putter - LAB something or another

Absolutely worth trying.  I tested the Max LS and went toe to toe with the other drivers you listed minus the Radspeed which I didn't get the chance to hit.  Ball speed wise it went toe to toe with everything else.  I also like the sound and feel.  Very solid feeling and muted.  Only reason I passed on it is because it doesn't come in 8 degrees.

I was under the impression the Max LS is the lower spinning of the Callaway models this year. I don't believe it's marketed that way but from some of the reviews I've read it seems that may be the case

Max Speed LS is really good and one of the most forgiving drivers of the 2021 class. I'm high spin and if it wasn't for the Speed Triple Diamond I would have the Max LS in the bag

I second this. I'm a high spin player and game the Epic Flash SZ with a Hzrdus Smoke Black Shaft. It changed my driving around when I first tried it. This sucker left me wanting to keep it after 2 rounds of golf in miserably protected fairways (water).

Rented the Max LS as part of a set for a weekend of golf with the new Mitsubishi MMT shaft in it and I was shocked at how forgiving the driver was. I had quite a few drives in the 290+ range culminating in a 337y drive off a toe-y strike (no wind). There's only one shot I can think of that really took off on me and it happened to hook around a wild dog-leg left to give me an 90y pitch in so I wasn't complaining. I can't stress how far the new Epic line has come from the Mavrik and Epic Flash for my purposes.

Definitely give it a shot outdoors if you can. Sims are great but they don't accurately capture the way the ball moves in the air when you have wind and other factors.

Gaming the Max LS and really like it!  Tried the Sim2 and Radspeed.....was the best feeling and most forgiving of the 3.  Distance wise, they were all about the same for me and I'm like others as well. High speed, high spin, fairly neutral attack and this just gives me great results.

Not sure about the Max LS, but I hit the Max, and was very impressed. Long and straight. I need to get on a monitor to compare it to my current driver, but it passed the eye test.

Both Max heads are terrific.  I struggled with the 9* Max LS head, so I now have the 10.5* in the Max LS.  I have 9* and 10.5* with the Max.  Still doing some early season testing with heads, shafts, lofts, etc., but very pleased with the whole line.

It is confusing for sure. However, I have exact measurements of the heads. So I am not guessing the performance of them.

In my opinion, Max LS was Callaway's way of competiting with the DNA of the Ping G425 Max. If you like Ping G425 Max, you most likely will like MAX LS. If you like TSi3 and Radspeed, more often than not, you will like Epic Speed more.

I had the Mavrik SZ for a while and it was not good at all for me. I found it to be very unforgiving when hit outside the center and when buttoned it did not work any better than std. Mavrik. I loved the std, Mavrik but I am a hook machine at times and that club did not help with a left miss.

Enter the Epic Max LS. Wow what a difference!! This thing is forgiving and protects the left side for me. When hit in the center it makes a nice crack at impact and it is as long as any driver that I have played. Outside of center it makes a more muted carbon sound but the ball still goes a long way and does not have a lot of side spin. I think you should give it a try especially if you struggle with a pull or hook.

I had a Mavrik standard for a bit and hit a SZ through a friend and overall it really didn't impress me. I went right back to my Epic Flash. This Epic MaxLS though... yeah... I could definitely see it in my bag. Without changing anything at all I was hitting draws onto the fairway when my stock shot is a fade.

@AcesAndHoles Your experience with Mavrik lines up with what I experienced fitting with it. There's a reason why so many Callaway Staffers chose to play the tour only models.

Epic Max LS has been a great driver to fit with, even the stock MCA MMT shaft fits a good amount of people.

If you normally hit a fade, check your strike. With a driver since the face is curved from heel to toe, you can hit draws if you strike it on the toe.

IMO, the Max LS has an advantage over the G425s in that it starts off lighter as well as ability to much better fine tune the left/right flight with it's sliding weight (vs 3 holes option)

The Epic Max / Max LS / Speed are the real deal.  Hit all at a demo day and made a pick.  I usually roll my eyes with the new releases and all the techno nerd marketing speak but these are so legit.  The forgiveness of Max is just absurd.

+1. For me this is the key to Callaway drivers. Add enough weight to get them closer to the weight of Ping drivers and they perform much better for me. What I do with any Callaway driver is start adding lead tape to the back and front of the sole until I see the consistency of strike and accuracy I want at the range, then I go for the more permanent solution with weights and hotmelt. I don’t want all the extra weight in the rear — I want 2/3 of the total weight increase in the rear and 1/3 near the face (toe and heel).

As a ping g425 player I would love to see some comparison numbers.

I am a 410/425 player.....been so long since I have gamed a Callaway, since I need some spin and the 'max' versions all have had some draw-bias, which kills me

neutral, stable and some reasonable spin if I get 10.5* loft and flat sleeve?

thoughts?

  • 2 weeks later...

Tried the Max LS today with high hopes. It's not for me sadly. First up, the decal for the sweet-spot on the crown looks too near the heel to me, not really had that with a driver before. It is super forgiving, but I couldn't get the ball-speed out of it that came with a G410 plus, let alone Epic Flash SZ. I'm going to try the Speed next. It's been 2 years since I last found a new driver to bag and I'm getting withdrawl symptoms!

If you have the ss for it and need less spin, then triple diamond LS all the way.
