I empathize with your frustration and I understand your viewpoint but I look at it this issue in a different way:    I couldn't play golf for almost two years due to surgeries and medical is

I always read and hear about pace of play. There is no 1 pace for everyone.   Example: today 4 of us played in 3 hr 15 mins. The foursome behind us were antsy on a few tee boxes and on a par

I feel very fortunate. We have cheap golf, nice courses (for the most part) and I haven't made a tee time in 30 years.

Yes, I realize how good I have when I read the stories of 5-6 hour rounds. Our normal average in summer is 3:45, and spring/fall is 3:15 for 4 in carts, and using multiple tee boxes. Our usual tee times are within the first 3/4 hour of opening, so not a lot of people out there to hold us up.

If I was to play in the afternoon on a weekend it might be 4:45 or more but that doesn’t happen often.

Point is, golf is very enjoyable at anywhere from 3-4:30 hours but can wear a person down any longer.

There is no need to rush to see who can finish the fastest, just play on and play ready golf.

Faster players can go through if there is a benefit, but if there is no where to go we are all playing in the same amount to time whatever that is.

You folks in Ontario must be incredibly frustrated right now. It defies logic. We know so much now and the tracing studies show that outdoors is the very best place you can be. You need sunshine, fresh air, you need to enjoy your hobby/passion, you need to relieve stress by making more stress by playing golf!

I'm sorry to read and hear of this. Remember this on June 2nd next year...

This thread does not compute. NullReferenceException error... (sorry for the nerd programming reference).

Yeah, I agree that the golf landscape has changed a bit, especially since covid started. I belong to a private club that never did tee times, but had to start using an online tee system last year. I actually like the tee times, but a lot of the older members are upset about it. Personally I think they are upset because they think they have a right to the prime time tee times on the weekends, and with the new online system they aren't fast enough to grab those slots anymore.

My course recorded the most amount of rounds played than it ever has in its history last season.

Hang in there, things will eventually self-correct. Once school activities start opening back up, most parents will have to divide their time between carting their kids around to those activities, and playing golf.

I am going to try to play outside of the city (INDY) for most of this year.  I'm hopeful that smaller towns will be less busy, and the greens fees have shot up so much in town it will lead to some savings as well.

Yea its a bummer and not making much sense to any of us. Signed up to play in the men's league at my local course this year for my first time, and have missed the first Thursday night due to the closure, and it looks like well miss the first 4 or 5 league nights if they don't lift the restriction.

Agree, I was a little irritated last spring when Massachusetts closed courses for about 6 weeks or so even though Connecticut didn't close at all. But in hindsight I could at least understand it a little as there was still a lot of uncertainty about the situation. But in 2021? Nah, doesn't make any sense at all.

Just saw that the US Open has canceled the local qualifying for Canada due to this. A real shame.

I have never been so frustrated with golf, and for the first time it has nothing to do with my game.
You can’t get a decent tee time, if you can, it’s in the sticks 45 min away, or in another county. If you want to get some practice in before, you have to show up a hour early because there’s no parking, a line to check in, line for the bathroom, and you have to wait for the range and putting green. Then a packed course, slow round, and another 45 min home. Rates are thru the roof, so you’re paying a premium for this hassle that eats up an entire day.
Even the hard core golf buddies are taking a pass on that, so you end up out by yourself.

Ranges are even worse. Half a dozen stalls blocked off for group lessons. Another half a dozen taken up by the entire family that thought it would be fun to go hit balls together. The rest are tied up by the group socializers, who spend more time talking to each other than swinging a club, but each bought jumbo buckets, and will be there for hours.

Show up to the range before it’s even open, and there’s 30 people lined up like it’s the half yearly sale at Nordstrom or something.
It’s like you can’t play golf, can’t practice golf, and you can’t even get ahold of a simulator.
Im at the point where looking at my clubs, or thinking about anything golf related just gets me irritated.

So let's just suppose it's a nice sunny day in Ontario and I happen to find myself near the club I belong to and decide to just shoulder my bag tee off on one? Would the Mounties come boot stomp my insubordinate butt and throw me in jail? Would the club employees stop me? What if several dozen of my club mates had, coincidentally the same inclination at the same time?

There comes a time in a mans life.

I'm with you there JJ. I did however play a round on Friday. It's one of the more expensive and difficult courses in the area so there weren't too many neophytes and we played quickly.

It's unusual but I'm seeing a lot of younger ladies in groups hitting balls. They are very chatty and loud. I get it - it's a public place but I'm trying to seriously practice but it's a party like atmosphere. Strange days and I miss the old days.

Every round i pour one out for our fallen comrades in Ontario. I live 40 minutes from the Ontario border , it sucks, have a lot of friends there.

There's a lot of courses near the border too. I know people who live in Ontario but belong to courses in Quebec, and can't play because they aren't allowed to cross into Quebec due to the recently closed border.

In your scenario above you're more likely to get murdered by another golfer LOL...I don't think they want people doing that because they are probably close to having courses re-open and don't want anyone mucking it up

Last year, it was crazy.. because everyone wanted to get out and play.  Needed fresh air..

I'm not seeing the craziness this year.. Golf in my area seems to be back to normal, other than wearing masks in the clubhouse..

Not here ... 4:30-5 hour rounds in the middle of the week. Three groups stacked on tees ... guys waiting for greens to clear on 375 yard par 4s so they can hit irons OB ... 5-somes marking, plumb-bobbing and lining-up 6-inch putts for triples ... it's crazy here, and I don't even get near a course on the weekends.

Apparently the course that opened the last week shares 60% of its cart paths with a conservation area/hiking trail.  Naturally, because health is the primary concern, the conservation area is open and people are walking around there.  Someone reported the cops were ticketing people leaving, but were also saying they don't want to  but they have to follow orders.  Which is disappointing because a few weeks earlier they had a shining moment on that front.

I've said this before but... Topgolf is booming. We can't hire enough to keep up with the business. Seems like every day theirs the die hards waiting for us to open. It's 50% guys who want to make sure they can practice and 50% people who want multiple bays but don't want to pay for multiple bays.

We're on a wait all the time every day. Some days are small waits, like 45 minutes. Some days are 3 hour waits. I've had to stand in our lobby and tell walk in guests @ 9PM that there's a good chance they'll never get a bay even though we close at midnight.

I was injured early last season and then when I returned by club had gone from sleepy to insanely busy thanks to the Covid Surge.  My routine used to be to play on my way home from work as its right on my way home.  I'd play or practice 5 or 6 days a week.  Last season I'd drive by and see the parking lot and range crowded and I'd just keep driving home.  Good for the club but it broke me of my habit of going to the golf course after work.  Its now May and I haven't played or practiced a single time.  Haven't touched a club since October.  Going to the course in the evenings was my escape from people.......that's impossible now.

Only been playing 10 years and its Canada so darn happy to have gotten out in April.

Played 9 last night and the folks ahead of us were brutally slow. 3 of the 4 Often playing two balls off the tee due to bad shots. Had a group behind us who later apologized for hitting into us twice.

Yup, busier. Yup, lots of newbies and teens playing. Yup, gotta be diligent to get a tee time

But...Damn happy I can get out of the house. Some provinces have not allowed golf.

I played with 2 guys last week who both said they took up golf last year due to covid and liked it so much they kept playing, and plan to keep playing which is why they joined our club.

they hit the ball pretty well too.

That's nice i guess. Golf did need to "grow" a bit to keep it's infrastructure full (most normal years clubs desperately chased members). Maybe now even after the boom we'll have 5-10% more golfers who just ended up liking it

It would be very annoying as mentioned to be a public course golfer, or to use local driving ranges. They are still packed like crazy every day. I tried to get a tee time last weekend at a public course on Wednesday for the weekend, and every single one i called was full the entire day

I am also in Canada and we noticed last year that golf is booming here. This year, it is a different story. The boom is here. lol

The usual public courses we play, I have never seen their parking lots so full. As in jam packed full. And in the 10 years that I have been in Canada and playing golf here, this is the first season where I almost was hit by a golf ball 5 x already and we are just in the first month of the season. lol

Then last Friday I was at the putting green of a public course near our place and I was there around 4 pm. I noticed that players were teeing off one after another at the first tee. Mostly hackers and novice players. Players were consistently coming from 4 pm to 5 pm when I left. I have never seen such flow at that course on a Friday afternoon.

But I guess this is good for the game? The course we used to belong to, about three years ago, was giving promos to get members enticed to join as the club was slowly dying. We used to just walk up and tell the pro shop that we will be playing and off we go. Fast forward to today, they cannot accommodate walk ins anymore and their tee times are booked solid daily. I guess the fact that they are located in the middle of the city and they are a 9 hole course really attracts beginners to play.

But with you question, no, golf is the only time I have to escape from real life. LOL We just have to deal with this boom and try to enjoy as much as we can before winter comes again.
