What up with Matthew Wolff?

TheIncelGolfer

His swing does look more rigid than normal, hard to say how much impact the injury has, but it certainly looks like some.

I have to imagine it is extremely hard to be DQ'ed from the Masters, he must've signed and bolted for that to happen. Somehow they can record almost every group and every shot, but you added wrong on a hole without someone checking? Strange

Lastly, extensive travel, even with tons of money, sucks after a while. Can't blame him for trying work through maintaining a mobile support system.

His swing has held up under pressure. He is a tour winner. He will be back. Things happen.

There are multiple tour winners that lose it for a time. He will get it back.

Time will tell. Don't misunderstand me. I wish him the best and a successful career. My point is he has some moving parts that are unusual to say the least. I have seen where those moving parts cause issues when it is round 4 of a major tournament. He DID shoot 5 over par and lost by 6 the last time he was in that position. Hardly the first to underperform in the last round of a major. The PRESSURE they have on them under those circumstances is something I could never imagine. Just saying about the extra moves in his swing. Maybe he will go on to be wildly successful and tens of thousands of youngsters will try to copy his swing. As I said earlier....we will see.

I hope he gets whatever figured out. I do like the kid. He seems pretty humble. Damn though I can’t listen to him talk. Something about him irritates the F out of me.  If you’ve seen any of the Taylormade promo videos on YouTube with their stable of players you may know what I’m talking about.

I agree I'm sure he's a nice guy and he's young so I give him the benefit of the doubt but he needs to just speak slowly I think. I'm not sure Oklahoma state is known for its academics either...

Matt is teeing it for the first time in almost 2 month at the US Open. Man I hope he's found his happy place and does well.

He's way better for golf than the Instagram Tough-Guy Bros. Anyone who disagrees can meet me behind the gym after school.

Gee, the U.S. Open is a tough place to come back after that long away from competition. Hope he isn't making a mistake; I really like Wolff (Hovland too). If you're not ready to play you can get beat up pretty badly.

Yeah. He withdrew after an opening round 78 during the Farmers. I hope he comes out guns blazing.

A guy goes into a slump for 7ish months and the WRX forum buries him dead and already starts giving clueless solutuons. Sometimes I wonder how many have actually followed the game for any period of time to realize there are many peaks and valleys. Something tells me there would have been a pile of posters back in early 2000's who would have said Phil will never win a major.

Um it didn't seem like everyone was writing him off you have to admit his action is super weird and violent. Anyway hopefully he has it sorted out and yes there are peaks and valleys but you have to admit multiple wds after shooting 80s and literally hitting it everywhere did have a smiley Kaufman feel to it.

Anyway he's obviously playing better although after making 9 birdies in round one I'm sure he wanted to be more the -1.  it will be interesting to see how he finishes the week. If he keeps it up and wins will be a huge boost of confidence could get him on a roll.

I had hovland in fantasy and saw he wd due to "sand in eye" I had never heard of that before...

You only have to scratch your cornea one time to know exactly what it is. Sand in my eye is how I scratched mine: I rubbed it trying to get it out, within a few hours my right eye had swollen so much I couldn’t open it. After a trip to the ER I spent the next 4 days in an eye patch and a 2 week prescription for antibiotic drops. It sucks. Immensely.

Interesting post-round interview from Matthew. Like he says, right now he is still struggling from getting up from bed in the mornings and not to be in the spotlight. The only goal is to be happy in the golf course and it doesn’t matter what the score card would look like. He has been struggling mentally and still in process to come back. No expectations for this week. Very open interview and I hope what happens in the weekend, he can still be proud of himself. Very strong person just to speak openly up his struggle. Keep being strong!

Wolf is clearly suffering/recovering from clinical depression (not being able to get out of bed is a common symptom), but the question is why?  To me it's pretty clear - he read his own headlines and thinks there is no way he can live up to them.

1) He won on Tour as a 20 year old - to date, it's his one and only victory on Tour - the 3M Open two years ago with one of, if not THE weakest field of the year.

2) He played in that COVID event at Seminole and, being the least known of the guys playing with Rory, DJ, and Rickie. I think the general impression of that event from fans was "Why is 75% of the broadcast Wolff talking and he's annoying as f***?"  He came across as a guy trying to fit in with "the cool kids."

3) By winning early and getting that opportunity at Seminole, I think Wolff both thought he was in the same tier as those guys and knew it was an enormous mental burden to proved he belonged.

4) Having that unusual swing, he garnered a lot of press - again, a ton of publicity and he was probably thinking "Do I deserve all this recognition?"

Good to see him performing well this week and wish him the best, but he needs to let his performance on the course lead, let the accolades follow, and go from there.

Our soft never heard the word no society has bred tons of so called mental illness. Hitting a ball for a living and wearing a 15K watch when you finish. Cry me a river. People all over the world have it much tougher. This kid has no idea what pressure is. Im not saying he doesn't have issues but stop acting like it's so tough. Back in the 50's and 60's, 70's Touring pros, Pro's in almost every sport had a side job to survive. They also missed their kids being born, Birthdays and tons of family events to play along side their teammates because it was their job. They did it to provide for their family. Don't get me wrong.

I like the guy. I am pulling for him. But enough with these mental issues. He has played the game his entire life. Even on the biggest stage it's just a game.

Now we're diagnosing other people's mental health issues on here? Sheesh. The kid's in his early 20's he could be depressed because he broke up with a girl for all you know. To claim that it's "pretty clear" to you why a complete stranger is depressed is a new level of lol even for golfWRX

Yeah it rubbed me the wrong way when he said he stepped away because he didn't enjoy it anymore.

He's getting paid millions to do something most people have to pay for and only in their spare time AFTER working a full time job.

Probably most hookers don't enjoy " it" anymore either but it is the work they know

He has the luxury of having earned more than the average hooker, so he can choose a new career path if he cares to

He's said as much.

That being said, his press conference Thursday could not have been more tone deaf to say that "professional athletes deal with a lot more stress and pressure than most people."

Really?  More than a single mom working 60 hours a week just to try and make rent?

Get a little perspective.

Perspective yes but for each person stress can manifest itself because of any situation we are not use to. Yeah the scenario you mentioned about a mom is far worse but that isn’t the worse scenario if you compare it to people who can be gunned down in a war zone or die of malnutrition. It’s all a matter of perspective.

For all the people saying millions of dollars means you don't deserve to be depressed, I'd say you should stick to your not-so-well paying day job rather than play psychologist.

I've started off with very little, had money, lost it, and had it again.  At no time did my net worth correlate with my happiness.  The only thing money does is take away the stress of not atarving to death.  Once that need is met the rest of the building blocks towards being truly content are independent of wealth.
