i210 magic dust

I currently play the T100s where distance is great but miss the Mizuno-level feel (coming from MP-60) and I have an opportunity to let it go for pretty much same price I got it for. While I'm waiting for my fitting session next week, I just went to GolfTown to try some irons out.

What I am planning to try during fitting:

  • Mizuno JPX 921 Tour
  • Srixon ZX7
  • P7MC

Because there have been so many people raving about i210 and despite being a 2+year old iron without a successor in sight (I'm not sure if i59 would be a direct successor) I gave them a try. I don't know what magic is being used but these irons were the purest/softest out of all irons. In addition to that it had the most consistent distance and dispersion. These were way more forgiving than my T100s and felt more like closer to T200. I really did not give i210 a try before and definitely not my cup of tea when it comes to looks (does not look anything close to JPX 921 Tour, ZX7 or T100s when it comes to size or looks). Having said that, I will definitely be including this as a top choice to be fitted into next week.

Can someone please enlighten me on how these irons despite it being cast (not even forged) can feel so buttery soft and feel so great? It was only a few shots but I'm comfortable saying these felt better than Mizuno and Srixon.

I gamed some for 2 years (and i200 for 6 months).  The 210 was far better feeling than the i200.  Other than a pure forged CB, nothing has ever felt better than i210.  Far better feeling any “forged”/tungsten blend iron I’ve ever hit.  Amazing forgiveness too.

Yeah, big dampening insert plus it is a very high MOI head, two things that will definitely help in the feel department.

I admit I'm surprised at the incredible love for these, considering how high the CG is.  <shrug>

In the interest of full disclosure, I've been thinking of trying a set myself.  My requirements are a little less mainstream, making a used set less likely, so I've tabled the idea for now.  🤔

How does high MOI help with feel?

1 hour ago, TiScape said:

Perhaps the bigger sweet spot just equates to more sweet feeling shots.

That is the general idea, yeah. The more stable a head is (higher MOI), the slower it twists when you miss the sweet spot which means you ultimately feel less torqueing/twisting in your hands. Combine that with something the absorbs extra vibration and you have a club that generally feels friendlier.

I was seriously considering these earlier in the season.  Then I noticed L Westwood was constantly racking up Top 2s using these, and had a smoking hot MILF caddie at the same time to boot (Chicks dig the GI clubs), and they immediately went on "The Hot List".  Then he cooled a bit, and so did my considerations.  If they can't make a fairly decent journeyman pro win a wanna be major like The Players or Bay Hill, what would make me think they could help a chop like me win my net Sunday Nassau?

They are great and were in my bag for awhile.  Alas the long irons and I did not get along great, peak height was a bit lower than I liked.  I played a 410 4 and 5 iron, but they didn't blend great (to my eye) and in the end I sold them to a buddy.

I would have been fine playing the i210 though and would have stuck with them had the ZX7, ZX5, and ZX4's not come out.  Those irons (and the utilities) blend so well and are just so perfect for me it is not even funny.

What are your opinions on the coating of the ping i210 irons and how durable it is?

It's fairly durable.  It will show a bit of chatter, but I was pleased how they looked after almost 2 straight years of gaming them.

One of the bigger factors not mentioned is that it's cast out of a different steel than "normal" cast clubs.  Ping has been using 431 steel for a few years, it is a little bit softer feeling than normal 17-4.  And yes, they added a crap ton more elastomer than the i200, it is absolutely noticeably softer feeling.  Great irons, just a bit too much bounce for me.

The last Ping irons I played were the i20s. I loved them except for one issue: The insert on the back of the club head was applied with a very weak glue. I would constantly pull a club to find that the insert was gone and I would have to send that club back to Ping for repair. I probably did this a dozen times, including sending the same club back multiple times. Has Ping improved their quality control over the past 5-6 years?

I played my first half round with my new i210 with DGS300 120, my first impressions are:

-very ease from the tee plenty forgiveness

-feel wise they're clearly not forged, but is ok

-very good shot shaping for being a CB

-not good turf interaction with tight lies like my course is playing now

-modern distance

I struggled for a while with DG 120 then SF i95, but I knew i210 is a perfect fit. It turned out that S400 TI performed better than others due to the feel and consistency.

I am looking forward to seeing the new version of the i200s 👀

What do you think would be an improvement?  These have been out 3+ yrs now with no replacement in sight.....
