Kapalua Plantation worth it??

Recommended Posts

Hi!  I'm headed to Maui on 5/7/2021 and have a free day to play.  I've already played Wailea Gold and am thinking I should try Kapalua Plantation.  Can anyone tell me if it's really worth $380 (after tax and fees) or if I should try Wailea Blue or another course?

Also, if anyone is going to be there that Sunday (5/9) and wants to join me (10ish handicap if that even matters) please let me know.

I appreciate your feedback and recommendations!

Erik

$380 is steep, but its a great design and its in Maui.  Views are awesome.  How often do you get to Maui?  Maybe splurge if you don't get there that often

Thanks for the info Rory4Pres!  Is there another course that you'd recommend?

Honestly plantation is in a league of it's own.  I played 2 of the 3 courses in the Wailea area and they were nice but nothing breathtaking.  I would probably play those again since playing golf in hawaii is fun regardless.

There's a few others I haven't played as well.

I will say, if you play plantation, make sure to eat at their restaurant, it's very, very good.

It's the most fun and memorable course I've ever played.  I'm a Bandon regular, and have played a few other Hawaiian courses, and without question still put Plantation as the most fun.   As to whether it's worth $380, that's something I can't answer for you.

Are they still offering twilight rates?   You can get some significant savings going that route.

I consider it one of those have to play it at least once courses if you're on Maui.   And when I finished I wanted to immediately play it again after having a better feel for the conditions.  But having played it twice, I'd think hard about shelling out $380 to play it a third time.

If you choose to play one of the Wailea courses instead, I'd recommend the Emerald over the Blue.   IMO, the Emerald is more of a challenge than the Blue, and while it's not as brutal as the Plantation, I think it is the most picturesque course on the island.

My favorites were the two Makena courses, but unfortunately they've been taken private.

I'd be careful with twilight, if you couldn't play 17 and 18 it would take away any value imo.  Maybe if you got one of the first twilight times, and there wasn't anyone in front for a few holes, you could make it.  Unfortunately, you'll often run into slow play due to picture taking and the potential difficulty of the course if the winds are howling.

18 is awesome.  I was playing around a 2 or 4 handicap years ago when I played it and hit a good drive, good 3 wood and was still 191 out for my 3rd, haha!  I was playing the tips, gave a good perspective of just how far some of the tour guys hit it.

Twilight is out, have dinner plans Sunday at Mama's Fish House that evening.  They they punch the greens on Tuesday so small window...

I think I'll book it there and report back!

Thanks again everyone!

Plantation will feel like a bargain compared to Mama's. Both worth it in my opinion and both on my list when in Maui

Worth it or not, you need to play it.   Lots and lots of different holes, no 2 are the same.  It is the kind of course that when you watch the Sentry ToC, you will remember where you hit each ball on each hole.  That itself makes it worth it.

This is a great way to think about it.

And yes @ccupike23 it's worth it. The Wailea courses are nice but Kapalua is Kapalua.

As much as I like playing the Plantation course I prefer the Manele golf course on Lanai. It's an amazing course with views to match. Everything is second to none from the ride from the Four Season's to the pro shop employees, driving range and course conditions, restaurant, etc. When I played it was like having the whole golf course to myself.

We stayed at the Four Season's and I think that nowadays you have to be a guest at the Four Season's to play but I could be wrong.

You can also golf at Cavendish on Lanai which is 9 holes and is free to golf.

Also in Wailea, I don't know if the Red Bar is open but if so they have a great happy hour from 3 - 8.

You can't go wrong with Mama's

The Dunes at Maui Lani is a fun layout but not the best condition.  But its cheap.  Kahili was also a nice track but the day I played it it was extremely windy and its uber challenging in those conditions because you're pretty exposed in most places.  https://kahiligolf.com/

So you're saying that Sunday is going to be expensive!!

$380 is steep at Plantation but you have to play that course. I stayed at a rental next to Mama's Fish House for couple nights, never got a reservation though, it was packed. I wish I did in advance. That was couple years ago before pandemic hit.

Enjoy your expensive day but it'll be worth it.
