At the 20 level it probably doesn’t really matter

Let nobody, I mean nobody, tell you what brand or model clubs you should play. It should be 100% based on what makes you happy, what you like looking at and what you like swinging.

Get them checked and possibly adjusted for length and lie, and go play your brains out.

Chasing iron sets is like arguing about different brands of bottled water. Seriously.

on a semi-serious note - play what you love, love what you play. Unless you're paying your mortgage from playing golf, it should be fun with a focus on what is important to you. If low score is the main or only driver, then find what gives you that. If there are other less tangible benefits - how the club feels when you hit it flush (even if that is only a few times a round), or how the club looks, or appreciating a certain brand - those can all be important factors or not. Your life, your golf game, pick what moves you.

Honestly most of the time if your even a decent iron striker i dont think the gi set is going to improve you over the player irons set. You can still miss either set long or short or left and right. Ive player both and ive missed both the same ways. Actually ive scored my lowest with the players set and not im playin mp5 blade. In all honesty the mp5 blade is about the easiest to hit blade their is. That being said its still a blade but i havent seen my scores change. I think score differential comes from short game skill and short game equipment honestly.

Who cares, if you like the player's irons, play them. If you think the GI/SGI would help you out and have more fun, play those. You'll find that outside of WRX, people are as likely to tell you their clubs are "golf pride's" as they are to have the slightest clue what you're playing. So in other words, yes, you shall play forged irons. Also: you shall go on to the end. You shall fight in France, you shall fight on the seas and oceans, you shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, you shall defend your island, whatever the cost may be. You shall fight on the beaches, you shall fight on the landing grounds, you shall fight in the fields and in the streets, you shall fight in the hills; you shall never surrender.

Shoutout to my 8th grade english teacher that made us memorize that way back in the day, it's finally been useful

I am an 8 who can only drive the ball a tad over 200 yards and I only play GI irons.   I will never understand why people always want to make the as hard as possible.

Just traded in a set of JPX825 on a set of Apex DCB with grphite shafts and man are they sweet.  Less pain after a round and pretty much identical distances and the little working the ball that I do is perfect.

Look down at them, take a few 3/4 swings then hit some  shots.  The clubs sort of choose you

For me it isn't about "making it hard." It's more about making me work. I play golf because of the physics. I love having the ability to control the ball. Not just hit it in the right direction, but actually put it where I intended to.

For me the feeling of a well executed shot and seeing the results are what it's all about. But if I slack, or get distracted, or pull my head, it's ugly. Like, feeling is from your hands up your arms. You don't even need to look at the club face, you know EXACTLY where you hit that one. But I just drop a ball and hit it again. 🤣

I have 2 cousins that will not play anything that's not forged player's cb.  Both bogey golfers.  Got a buddy of mine who I golf with on occasion who's a 10 and he's not comfortable playing anything that isn't GI.  I've always played forged player's cbs and mbs so that's what I'm used to.  Shovels with thick top lines and lots of offset turn me off.  My father is a 6 and he's been playing with what were essentially baby blades before Miura made it official except it was Honmas.  His buddy who owns a golf store recommended he switch over to the XXIO GI irons due to his age and after 6 months of testing, he hated them and bought himself a set of honma player's cbs.  His iron game has been so much better.  My point is that golfers should play with whatever they feel comfortable with.  Now will SGI and GI irons make the game a little easier for a high handicap player?  Absolutely.

I’ve said this before and let’s be honest, only people on golfwrx care what you play. In real life, someone may comment on how you are playing and ask what you use if playing well, but nobody has ever asked the same question of anyone I’m playing with if they’re playing badly.

As others have said, play what you enjoy.

I’m going to be getting some new irons this year, and have a similar dilemma.  I don’t hit the ball a long way, so part of me thinks something like the G425 would be sensible.  But I also like mucking about and trying to hit draws and fades (which I can do, but not always) - I’ve got a solitary VR Pro blade 6 iron that I sometime just go round with of an evening whacking balls for fun seeing what I can do.  Being a shorter hitter (I’ve got quite a bad back and limited flexibility after years of playing rugby) I think my route to lowering my scores is accuracy and a good short game - I know there’ll be a number of holes where I can’t make the GIR.  That being the case, I sometimes think I should just get something I like the look of and can have fun with, rather than chase distance.  But then I sometimes think the opposite 🤷🏻‍♂️

True, but when a relatively new golf company called Ping introduced the Eye 2 iron, everyone wanted a set.  And thus began the story of the top selling iron set of all time.

Did golfer's play improve with a more forgiving set of irons back then?  I think that the number of sets of Eye 2 irons you see still in play to this day would suggest that they did make a difference.

Rather than follow the line of thinking of play what you want, I would suggest play what you hit well.  That way you will play your best golf and that's really what we're all after.

I think a significant part of Ping’s success was also their dedication to club fitting.

And the Lord spake, saying, First shalt thou play whatever they want and take aim at the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou swing on three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt swing, and at the number of the swinging shall be on three. On four shalt thou not swing, neither swing thou on two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out! Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then swing thou thy forged player's club towards the Holy Pin...

This is spot on.  I actually never get asked about clubs unless it is driver related.  I love equipment, so I will bring up clubs from time to time. Many guys, even the best players I know, seem to use the same clubs for years and years.
