Crossline Cord vs Z Cord

snb9

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at grabbing some new grips and have decided on cords.

I used to have crossline cords on my mp57 irons 10+ years ago but replaced them with Lamkin R.E.L ACE grips, mostly for the colour (orange). Recently I picked up my old 3 iron that still has the crossline cord grip on it and was shocked at how much I liked the feel (just swinging it in the backyard)

I was going to just buy the crossline cords but then one day I was at golftown and held the mp20 irons that come stock with Z cords and I  really liked the feel of them as well.

So now I'm a little conflicted, I liked the z cords but have heard they're pretty harsh (didn't feel too bad, but also didn't hit balls). I also haven't had the opportunity to further check out grips as I live in Ontario where everything is closed for the time being.

I was wondering what you guys prefer and if you have reviews or recommendations. Thanks!

Long time user of both and would pick the Crossline Cords over Z-cords as my main grips.  I do find that Z-cords can get harsh on my hands and feel a bit skinnier at the bottom end, so have to build up a bit more as well.  The Crosslines also just have a more consistent feel over all.  Just don't have as much 'bite' as the Z-cords do.

It's just easier to find Z-cords over the Crossline Cords most times unfortunately.

Lamkin players cord is a great grip. Less taper in the right hand in the standard plus model too. Great feel and hold up fantastic. Cheap on eBay too...seen them for $4.75 in bundle buys

Check for the ACE Crossline Cords on eBay. Found some for pretty cheap recently.  They’re a great combo of the crossline cord with the ACE shock absorption.

I had the Z cords on several clubs for a while and I do feel they wear more quickly than other GP grips I've used in the past.  I also agree they have too much taper therefore I'm trying the MCC Plus 4 right now, which I feel may have too little.  🙄

I don't like the Z Cord too much, but the Z Grip +2 is great.  But that said, if I had to pick from the OP's two choices I would also go Lamkin all day.

I think those zgrip +2 are going to be my next grip, I'm currently using the tour velvet +4. Those seem perfect

The ZGrip +2 is one of the better grips I have used.  I generally use MCC with+1 wrap so they are an easy transition.  Nice traction without being rough on the hands, slightly more shock absorption than an MCC.  Great grip.  I love them for wedge grips.

Well, I was going to write a reply until I realized @PEI_Golfer had already written for me 😆. Lamkins all day for me if I have the choice as I think the rubber compound is better and they are a little more humane on my hands, but Z-cord is an acceptable fallback.

depends how much "cord" you want. I love the Z-cords and have played them the past 5 years. They definitely have a more rough/harsh feel than the Lamkin's

As for the golf pride's wearing out faster, I use a steel brush to clean them and rough them up again after they wear down a little. not sure what the life span of cord grips are but I get 2+ years no problem. Yes new ones would be nice but they still have plenty of traction left

Does anyone know if they have dropped the cross line cord? Can’t seem to find anywhere in Australia

I noticed around a month ago they weren't on Lamkin's site but the next day some arrived at our shop so I disregarded it. Just checked and I don't see them on the site still, somewhat concerning. If anything it has to be a supply chain thing, the chances they'd drop it have to be astronomically low.

I like playing a .58 grip so Crossline Cord's all day. I find the Z-Cord even for a .60 grip feels way too skinny especially in the bottom hand. In addition the rubber compound it is made out of I find gets firm and slick far quicker than the rubber lamkin uses. I'd only recommend Z-Cords if you like smaller grips or have smaller hands since their .60 seems like the skinniest .60 grip i've used.

Still not appearing on their site. A month ago I picked up some Crossline Cord midsize at a local Roger Dunn, they had plenty of standard ones there too so I hope they are still around. Best grips I've used.

I have played only crossline cords for over 20 years now.  It is the only grip that feels right to me.  Ive tried others, but these are the best for me.  They last as well.

I have been playing Crossline Cord Midsize since GP discontinued the green Victory Velvet Cord. Putting on fresh Crossline Cords is like gripping your clubs with 200 grit sand paper ! The best grip of all time IMHO !

Is it possible they're being replaced by the genesis cord which is on the website?

Also to thread jack a little, I'm in need of a replacement for TVC's given how they aren't being made anymore (so I'm told) and was looking at these two, given these issues would it be smart to just go the z cords? Really need a full cord grip, hybrids don't do it for me...
