When is it time to get rid of the College bag?

Recommended Posts

I still have my college bag with my name on the back pocket of the hoofer, graduated in 2005.  Stopped using it in 2009 but haven't been able to throw it out despite it being faded and worn.  When is it time?  For now, it sits empty in the shed, not even holding my backup set.

I still have a University of Md towel on my bag and I'm in my 70's.  Just out of loyalty. Obviously its not from my school days but I still go by the pro shop occasionally and spend some money there.  That said when something is worn nothing wrong with keeping it for memory sake - just don't take it to the course.

Still have our sons last HS bag in the attic over garage. It’s used for storage of clubs. I’ve been tempted to use it for nothing other than it was his. Been in attic for almost 8 years. Old Ping bags are hard to beat.

3 years or so ago I found a Hoofer bag at Goodwill and it was an original Hoofer. Now it was dusty and showed no wear and all the zippers worked so for $5 I bought it. Took it home and sprayed it down with Totally Awesome cleaner and the water hose. Decades of dust rolled off and the darn thing looked new. It is blue and white and had a big W on the ball pocket and Eagles on the side. I ran this through the computer base of both high school and college and have never found out who the team was. But it is a great bag and I am using it for now.Funny no one has asked anything about it

I played DI golf for a top program back in the late 2000s and we were fortunate to get a brand new bag with a new design each year. I quit using them as my actual golf bag as soon as I graduated because one of my biggest pet peeves has always been people using school bags when they either don't play for the team or are no longer playing for the team. However, my parents still have all 4 sitting in their garage.

My dad said he was saving them because he thought I'd want them one day (at the time I thought that was silly and told him to just throw them away), but as I get older I am happy he decided to keep them. I'm sure one day not too far down the road (when I have a proper place to store them) I'll collect all of them from him.

I have no issue with guys using bags that they earned .... and play with after they have graduated

“It’s not bragging if you’ve done it”

And hey, even the guys that rock the Florida State bags from Dick’s etc that you see out and about, some guys just love their alma maters and it is clear they didn’t golf on the team after you see their opening tee shot

Yeah I get that. Everyone has a different opinion and there is nothing wrong with that. Although this does seem to be a hot button issue for some (not that you or I really fall into that category).

I remember a little while back there was a thread started by someone who was trying to buy the exact same bag his school's golf team used. Myself and a few other former college golfers told him not to do that, but to instead show his support with headcovers or something similar since he wasn't actually a member of the team. There was one WRXer who got really upset at that and went on a rant about how much money he donates to his alma mater each year and how he deserves to have a team bag. 🤣

BTW those bags and clothes in your picture are quite the scene (in a good way)!

You went to Guelph???  I used to haul Euclid equipment out of there back in my trucking days. Even my Southern rednck self knows how to pronounce it. Gotta say it like you are throwing up. Yep those guys at the Euc plant educated me on that. Good guys the first thing they asked "where in the states are you from?" Answer South Carolina--- " Ohhhh how far from Myrtle Beach?" Back then I lived in the upstate so 150 miles or so

I have never had anyone ask about my hoofer bag. If they did I would tell the truth and tell them I bought it at Goodwill. I had always wanted a Hoofer and I found that one to try and for a knockout price. Old relic does good. Mine is old school silk screened on and sorta faded now and not flashy ( which I like) and is not as bright as the newer bags. So I guess it does not draw any attention which like I said I like

I remember the article or post--- Seems to me it was either a Ping or Vessel bag and I do remember ( I think)  the school involved was Clemson

Old School Hoofer faded and worn right up my alley--- But yeah you need to keep it and maybe do a throwback set in it for your college days

I really would like to see people put the school items into the closet and left there.  I mean school is over, there is no real need to show off.  So please, leave the ugly orange shirts and oversized orange golf hats at home.

LOL.  You have some problems you should have checked out.  Why do you think sporting your college logo is "showing off".  I'm guessing if you went to college, you'd be a fan of your college also.  Especially if you played on the team!  And orange is God's color!

Clean it up a bit and keep it for the memories. North of 50 here, and wish I had kept some of my old college tennis stuff. All I have left is my letter jacket now. Sits in a closet, but my daughter found it the other day and thought it was the coolest thing ever.
