What club/loft do you use inside 100 yards?

JCray33

Recommended Posts

I’ve usually used my 60 degree which is my 100 yard on full swing but doing some research I’ve heard 60 degree can be inconsistent on the half and 3/4 shots and I’ve definitely found that to be true! So now I’m hitting my 56 degree (110-115 full) on everything inside of 100...what do y’all play for the feel, inside 100 yard shots??

I use 50 for most shots between 110 and 50 or so.  I’ll use 54 for front pins or any other time extra height is required.  My 58 is basically a greenside club, used as little as possible, and almost always within 40 yds of pin.

I practice hitting a variety of distances with each of my wedges. I feel comfortable hitting a variety of shots with each of my clubs based off of either going waist high, shaft vertical, 3/4 swing and full. I can cover anything from 40 yards to 135 yards with this.

I did. I just decided 60 was not a good club for me so I went with a 58 and have not had issues since. Could be the 60 was just not a good bounce or something but I made the switch and haven't looked back. Also I have had no issues with floppers using the 58 instead of 60

On WRX, probably nobody. In the real world, almost everybody.

The very high loft makes it quite easy to strike the ball high on the face yielding inconsistent ball speed.  Combine this with touch shots posing problems for folks that don’t practice everyday and generally too little bounce for higher swing speed shots and you have a recipe for bad dispersion.

PW from 100 yards to about 50. 52/8 or 56/12 based on lie. Really don't full swing my wedges.

Benign conditions?

PW (45*), or GW (50*) most likely. Possibly 9i.

Depends on the pin and the green

Depends on the lie, flag position, wind, etc.

I'll use one of 58, 54, or 50 depending on the specific conditions.

An easy swing with my 52* wedge would be about ~100 yards. Full swing is 115.

However, inside 100 yards is where my game struggles, if I'm being honest. Tried being a "feel" player with wedges, which ends up with me putting shots either long or short.

I'm going to start really focusing on my wedge game, and do the Pelz method with the clock timing. I'm tired of having great drives and iron shots, only to leave my pitches in short or long.

Exactly. I use 46° or 51° wedge for less than full swing shots into the green.

It depends on what I'm trying to do. 100 yards is 91 metres... my 52 degree wedge is my 100-110 metre club, so I might take a bit off that if I'm exactly 90 metres away in an OK lie. Sometimes I'll go straight for the 58 - it will get there, but it's likely to be very spinny.

But I use my 8 iron, 9 iron, pitching wedge, 52, 58, and even 64. Depends on a bunch of different factors.

I'm a big fan of using half or 3/4 swings with various wedges to get my distances.

90 to 100 yds:  PW

80 to 90 yds:  GW

65 to 80 yds: SW or 3/4 PW

50 to 65 yds: 1/2 PW

30 to 50 yds:  1/2 GW

up to 30 yds:  8i, PW, GW, SW, or LW depending on the trajectory I need.  I'll only hit the ball as high as needed so the PW gets most the use.

Have been using my 54* more often for partial swings inside 100yds. It would depend on conditions and pin placement if I need to use 58*.

I WAS using my 54 for 100 but found my failure rate of getting it there was inconsistent. It also left a gap between 100-125 where my 50 covers.

NOW: My 50 covers 100-125. Smooth 3/4 gets me that 100y with plenty of bite. 54 covers anything under 90. 58 used around the greens and generally out of bunkers (usually hardpan around here).

I'm not a long-ball hitter, and get ~98 yards from my 48° wedge. (48 replaces 46° PW and 50° GW.)

I can get a couple extra yards if I play 48° an inch back (deloft).

54° SW full good for 85 yards. //  58° LW good for 50 yards on 3/4 swing... old 60* too inconsistent for more than half swing.

I read an article in GD about David Toms and his wedge game.  He recommended a 1/2 pitching wedge shot for his 100 yard shot.  I tried it and it could dial it in pretty consistently, I probably to about the 9:30-10 o’clock position.  Inside of 100 hundred is usually a variation of different 56 or 60 degree shots depending on flight, lie and green.
