What club/loft do you use inside 100 yards?

Very interesting to read everyone's posts...so many different ways to play golf, that's what makes it so awesome.

This is the biggest thing I'm trying to get dialed in this season...last season my wedge game was my biggest weakness, and I tend to hit shots over the green and get absolutely punished for it.

In theory, my plan for wedges this season is:

95-105 yds: 50* Mid

65-95 yds: 54* Mid

25-65 yds: 58* Mid

For greenside within 10 yds of the green, I can go Bump & Run with my 9-iron or finesse wedge shot with my 58*.

I have all new irons and wedges this season, so time will tell if these numbers end up being accurate.

I carry a low bounce 53 degree wedge and a high bounce 58. The lie will dictate the wedge I use- not always the distance. So, from a firm lie I may hit a 1/2 or 3/4 shot with the gap wedge when the distance would dictate a full 58. And the 58 is invaluable for soft lies. Thus, I practice a lot of 1/2, 3/4 and full shots with both and I let the course conditions dictate which wedge to use.

I've gotten pretty good at my bump and run game inside 80 yards.  As long as I don't have to carry anything, I will use anything from a hybrid down to a 56 based on the distance to the hole.  I've found this method to be much more reliable than partial wedge swings, and there's basically zero chance of making poor contact.  I used to be big on Dave Pelz's clock system, but I just don't have the practice time to keep my distances refined.

I play a three wedge setup. Set matching 46 PW, 52 with 8 bounce, and 58 with 10 bounce. I live in Seattle and play year round so conditions vary significantly from pretty much mud for 4-5 months in the winter to dry deadpan in late summer. I'll generally let course conditions and lie influence my approach and am comfortable hitting partial shots with each but I tend to bias toward the 58 from 95 in and then my 46 for bump and runs.

I find the 58 to generally be more versatile and the 52 to simply be a gap wedge for myself (120-95).

mostly a 60 but sometimes a SW (55) and if its super windy or I need to run it up a bank it might be a gw.

Inside of 65 yards its complete dependent on the shot whether I would play it with a 54 60 or 64 depending on how much green I have, the trajectory I want, where I want to land it, etc.

Most pitch shots I use the 60. Greenside bunkers are mostly 60. Longer shots are 54 and super short sided is 64. 64 is really just a club I use when I'm short sided. I hit lower running pitches and chips mostly with the 54. Occasionally I may hit a long chip and run or a bump into a bank with a GW.

100 I can do like a soft 3/4 54.

or I can give it a full 58 if I have to stop it to a front pin

inside 100 with no head wind it is usually a 58

Most everything from 100 and in is a 53 * PXG 0211 (54* bent 1* strong)

If I need to get up and down quickly I may use my 58* (60* bent 2* strong) but the harder I swing with the 58* the higher it goes with more spin.  So I have gotten better to take no more than 3/4 swings with the LW and most cases 1/2 swings where I just need the extra loft to get up over something and down softly on the other side.

SW is much easier for me to control and the club I use most often.

I played for many years with a 51/56 setup and no LW but with the stronger lofts I now have 48 GW (115 yards), 53 SW (100 yards) and 58 LW (75 yards).

I want to be hitting either a just past 1/2 swing PW or 3/4 swing SW depending on the yardage/wind direction. I try to remind myself this as at times at I fall foul of giving the SW a 100% swing and end up pulling it left. 🙁

100-80 yds is my 50 deg. Lots of factors go into this, but full swing is a 100 yd shot. 80-50 is my 54. From 50 on in, depending on where the pin is etc. etc. will use anything from my 58 deg - 8 iron.

Depends on lie, conditions, etc.

Stock 54* full swing is about 100 yards, 58* is about 80 yards...assuming flat lie, nothing unusual, I typically use the 54* for 40 yards to 100 yards....for everything inside of 40 yards I typically use the 58. Again though, so much is dependent on the situation. I chip with a 7 iron sometimes and just this past weekend was on a severe upslope (Backside of a bunker) at 80 yards, I used a 3/4 swing PW because I knew the ball was going to go sky high.

I've got carry distances for full, 12:00, 1:30, and 3:00 PW, GW, SW written on a card clipped to my bag.  I bias towards playing the lower trajectory shots with more runout and grab the higher lofted clubs when there's less green to work with.  This gives me 12 stock shots to use from about 110-in, and has taken strokes off my game for sure, no more guessing about what club/shot to play when inside full swing/full confidence distances

Is the clock system you use based on arm position or club position?

Depends on the lie and the conditions, but I typically play:

55 SW from 80-105

60 LW from 80-50

Inside of 50 is really specific on how much green I have to work with, pin location, green speeds and contour. I could hit a PW or LW or anything in between.

I never really swing the SW or LW over 75% power... most of the time they are around the 65% range. I can hit the SW 100 yards with a 60% swing or a 90% swing with the trajectories and spin changing.... all based on what I need to do.

I try to take 3/4 swings on my wedges rather than getting every yard out of them.  I pretty much stick to this but will sometimes use the 54 at even shorter distances in certain situations

50 Degree Wedge - Use between 95-115 Yards (full swing distance would be 118)

54 Degree Wedge - Use between 80-95 Yards (full swing distance would be 105)

58 Degree Wedge - Use less than 80 Yards (full swing distance would be 90)

A lot of factors play in to what I use. I don’t like playing full wedges if there is wind, especially in to the wind. Full 60 goes about 100 so if there is no wind I will play it from 95. In to the wind though I usually play some sort of shot with my 54. If there is a lot of green to work with I will even use my 50 at times.

Love this thread but I'm realizing it's an absolute blackhole of different techniques 😂 pretty awesome to read different styles of play tho!

I used to swing super hard/steep with the 60 deg. and get that 100yd range, but the more I worked on dialing the wedge game that strategy started to feel pretty silly. Like a lot of people posting in here I have 3 wedges with different bounces/grinds, and the beauty of those features is they lead to all these different options depending on the combination of yardage/lie. Generally I use 50 deg. in that 100yd range off a thicker lie, 56 deg. same range off a tight lie, and the old 60 deg...... that is the wizard stick from anywhere 80yd in.

Does anyone else feel the more you learn about the different shots/grinds/bounces within a wedge game it's almost like discovering a new game within the game of golf?? Golf is beautiful that way.
