Miura Irons - do they outperform others?

Recommended Posts

I have Miura wedges and have tested a bunch of Miura iron sets over the years.  No, they aren't any better than any other OEM out there.  It's all about preference.  If you want to drop 2k+ and have it be a show piece that you can brag to your golfing buddies then that's fine.  If you want to get them because they feel great and perform out on the course for you, that's fine too.  People have different reasons for buying expensive things whether it actually fits them or not is a totally different story.  For me it was because not too many OEMs offer high bounce options that feel this soft off the face.  I also do not not like the current domestic offerings for irons and wedges which is why I look JDM or even DTC hence my bag set up.

Miura irons are impeccably crafted and have a somewhat unique feel.  They bring pleasure to those that like them but, they won't lower your score compared to a similar iron.

No.

No.   <edit> no club is magic. Some play better than others for others. Would my dream Miura set play better than my KZG's? Doubt it, but they look good. Not $2800 good, but you know.

yah, they actually do. I think those are the older CB's but I am sure they're the same for the most part!

There is a lefty set of CB heads on ebay for $600, I shouldn't have looked. 🤣

They’re exactly the same, as long as they were the y grind since all the new ones are y grind.

Ah cool, thanks for the info. So those "older" ones have 2 versions? Y grind and non Y grind? I think all the newer ones are there Y grind's but I could be wrong.

Short answer - if you are looking for value, no. If you are looking for better performance - no

In their class they are superior irons.  And they aren’t a show piece, most people I play with know nothing about them.  They totally perform when fitted into them.  The grinds are far superior to even other top range Japanese offerings.  I’ll never game a game improvement cast short iron, no need to have a trampoline face.  I want performance and I know these are the most consistent best built irons in the world.  If you want to hit it higher you change shafts or lofts, when people want “forgiveness” on a mis-strike you are adding spring to the face.

Please, I've owned 4 sets of Miuras and more than that in wedges. They are manufactured to exacting specs. Don't even try to lecture. lol. If you want to spend twice as much as other irons, great for you. They typically get excellent ball speed for the design But in most people's eyes, that's not value. Good luck with your Miuras. All I can tell you is that early Miura iron users (2000 to ?) complained mucho about the iron grinds. I recognize they were working on that aspect. I could do about anything with the Series 57 wedge grinds. And now they have milled wedge grooves instead of their stalwart stamped grooves. I don't keep up with them because the prices are out of whack for my taste. But they are embracing tech.

Full transparency.....I own a set of TC 201's and really like them. Do they outperform the PING i210's I came from or the S55's and the Ap2's  I had? No they don't.

They do feel great , I do like the pre ground leading edge but I wouldn't say they outperform others.

Thanks for the feedback. Why did you elect to switch from the i210 to Muiras? Seems like the i210 has some fans also.

Aside from being a typical Wrx'er, I always regretted selling my Miura Cb57's and decided last year for my 50th that I would treat myself to a new set of irons. I'm extremely happy with them and would buy them again without hesitation.

@mattsam thanks for the feedback. You have an interesting back setup. Why go 501 in 5 iron then to 301 in 6-7 and then back to 501 in 8-pw?

I'm not sure if you are with me or against me on this.  Yes they have embraced new tech to a point, better leading edge grinds and stronger lofts.  But you can get the butter blades still from them.  I've been a miura user for decades, I've had almost every single set/wedge/putter they've introduced.  I don't care about value in an iron, or any other club for that matter.  I look down at the club and know it's the best for me.  If I think otherwise I try something else to see which is better.  For me my bag is as good as I can get it at this time.

And this is why I want to hit them. I have only been seriously playing since last summer, but when I started, I knew my irons were holding me back. I decided a combo set was the right way to go and got my Nike Vapor Combos. The difference in feeling was immediate. Then everyone kept saying "if you like the Vapors, the VR Pros are way better." So I got them and sure enough, even better. Then the KZG's fell in my lap and WOW.

That said, I now have my Mizuno MP-32 6 iron and it's at least as good as my KZG's. So really the only other test is a Miura blade and CB combo.

Yeah, there is a set of head on ebay that just lowered the price to $550. If I didn't already have a different set on the way, I'd be shopping for shafts. 🤣
