On balls, my only advice is to pick a ball and stick with it. The real difference between balls becomes readily apparent with the scoring clubs. You have to know how the ball is going to react when it hits the green, playing with balls of all different spin rates and descent angles is no way to hone the short game.

This a thousand times.  This is the number one advice I give to folks that come in or call the store.  Who cares what you play as long as you know what it's going to do.

OMG...you just nuked my entire presentation in like 10 seconds.   Very well done young man !

You could (1) do a ball fitting or (2) practice a lot with a variety of balls to see what suits you best.  Outside of those two options you are subjecting yourself to many opinions, none of which may

That's why my advice to either beginners or anyone who doesn't want to spend much on balls is to find the cheapest possible deal on several dozen good quality (i.e. urethane) balls. It's not hard to find something in the dollar or so range per ball when you're buying six months worth at a time and then you'll have a chance to really get used to them.

Saying the ball doesn't matter to a beginner is defeatist thinking. Not that different than saying choosing a precise target doesn't matter because they're probably going to hit it crooked anyway. Any time you introduce even a little more consistency into your game you might as well take advantage of it.

This right here.  I have a box of Top Flite XL balls that I was gifted.  I like to take them out and put them in play on holes where it's narrow.  If I hit one into the bushes or out on the street I don't feel nearly as bad as losing a tour ball.  I will say this.  They may be rocks and have very little spin into the greens, but they are LOOOOOOONG and great for beginners.

The XL straights is what I started using during my first year. You lose a ball, who cares it's $0.50

I was thinking Pinnacle Soft.  I was looking at some sites that offer used balls in different conditions.  Callaway Hex Soft and Srixon Soft Feel for a dozen in 5A condition is $14.99 each.  Are these good deals or no?

Like someone posted earlier, if your price point is $15 a dozen buy NEW balls for that price. Used balls are just that.... most " refurbished" balls come from ponds and lakes. Who knows how water-logged they are.

I'll get razzed for this opinion but as a beginner give yourself a chance to feel some consistency with the same balls, used won't give you that option.

Good luck, let us know how its going.

l agree. Too may good, cheap ball options out there nowadays to pay that kind of price for dodgy ones.

If you want to spend fifty cents a ball then you'll have to buy used ones. Once you get up over a dollar a ball the used ones aren't worth it.

I am a beginner but I always play with "used" Titleist Pro-V1 or Pro-V1x.  I get my AAAA quality Pro-V1 for 0.67c per ball.  The guy I purchase the ball from lives next to the golf course, and that golf course hosts a lot of corporate events.  He gets the golf course owner permission to go out and collect golf balls after every corporate events.  The event sponsor gives out brand new pro-v1 balls with corporate logo for its clients to play golf with.

He collects about 150 pro-v1 balls on average.  These balls got struck once by a lot people who don't know how to play golf, just a social outing event.  In other words, you can say these balls are still brand new.  He texts me when he has more than 150 balls to sell to me for $100.  I found out that pro-v1 balls that have corporate logos on them are even more expensive than the regular pro-v1 balls, due to the logo customization.  Go figure.

When my pro-v1 goes into the water, I do not feel as bad at 67c per ball versus 4+ USD brand new.  These are my 67c pro-v1 balls

Hmmm... Your neighbor must be in super tight with the course owner.

Most courses would rather have those in a jar or basket close to the cash register. You have hit the golf ball lotto. Congrats bud.

He is not my neighbor.  He lives an hour drive from me.

I know him from another person that I am attending college with.  I've bought about 600 pro-v1 from him so far.  I've also referred many of my friends to him.  I don't think he knows the owner but he knows the general manager of the club.  The general manager allows him to roam the golf course right after the corporate event to pickup pro-v1 balls.  He is already retired so this just extra incomes for him.
