I'm an average distance hitter.  No amount of lessons, golf camps, personal instruction, fittings, or working out has changed that my swing speeds and average distances marry up almost exactly with LPGA averages.  Unfortunately, in league play men play from the Blues or on rare occasion Blacks.

From the whites, I can usually score in the mid-low 80's...occasionally scaring 70's with odd blow-up rounds of course.  From the Blues, however, that average is more like 90-92.  It's a different game when you are hitting hybrids instead of irons into greens, and on some holes can't even GIR from a pure distance perspective. Almost every hole becomes an exercise in getting up and down.

Other than becoming a Phil style short game genius which I'm working on, I'm at my witt's end on what I can do and still play competitively without relying on an 18+ HCP.

At the end of the day, there will always be long hitters and short hitters. Even at the highest levels of golf, there are shorter hitters who have won titles and made a boatload of cash because they've become the best wedge players and putters in the world. My 2 cents: become a better player from 50 yards and in. If you're going to be missing greens, you're going to need a reliable short game. Secondly, get back in the gym. Strength and flexibility are the recipe for speed. I promise if you find the right workout plan, you'll be able to pick up at least *some* speed.

For those saying he needs to improve his short game ... well yes and no

If he had him hit 5 shots around the green (20 yard uphill chip fwy, 20 yard downhill chip rough, 15 yard side hill rough, 35 yard over bunker rough, and 25 yard bunker shot) and his avg prox was 20 ft

If he was to get 'twice better' 10 ft ... his make % on the putt doesn't go up that much (so isn't gaining any shots)

(Junior Golfers, College Golfers, and Pros are the only golfers able to putt better than their skill level from mid to long distance ... they have the time to grind)

Now if his short game was avg beyond lets 30 ft, well this bring many 3 putts into play ... Tour pros avg more than 2 putts from outside 30 ft

Ive played with golfers who can shoot mid to low 70s (if not 60s) hitting there driver less than 250 on avg ... so there is no reason you can't break 85 with your current distances

I have no clue if you have an ego ... but you have to put it aside to become better

He did say that he avg 1 penalty shot off the tee ... my question would be how many penalty shots do you have on approach shots and how many times do you:

1) leaving an approach more than 30 yards short of the front of the green

2) In a bunker

3) have to hit over a bunker

because these are 'penalty shots' in my book as well due to the fact they bring 3 putts into play

Hope some these thoughts help

Didn't mean any offense and it wasn't in response to anything said in this thread. It was meant as a wake up call for any reasons you might have for not doing something about improving distance when being a short hitter clearly bothers you. You may not get to 120mph @50 years old but there is absolutely no reason why you couldn't get to 110+mph and 270+ carry distance with hard work and dedication.

Come on.....the tour average is 114mph, saying there is no reason anyone couldn't get to 110+ is a bit silly without seeing his swing, sequencing etc.

The only reason he couldn't get there through specific training and dedication is an underlying physical injury or disability.

110mph is not that fast (low 160s ball speed, 270-275 carry) and your tour average stat is misleading. The average of the top 125 players (contenders) is much closer to 120mph (mid 170s ball speed and 290-300 carry).

Most of the contenders on the Champions tour swing 105-110mph at 50-60 years old.

Your distances sound very close to mine and the course is about the same distances...  I am 4.3  as of last handicap reading... work on the game from 35 yds in.  And especially 5 foot putts in.  On average if you can hit 9 greens and  make half your 5 footers in ... WELL... you can do the math.  That is not a short game "wizard".  I average 10-12 greens and 75% up and down with average 2 birdies per round.  Now do that math.   Good Luck and keep working on the short game and putting.

Similar to my distances too.  I'm the hybrid wizard indeed LOL.

Seriously, it's an ok distance to play 6500 yard courses if you're steady.  The guys will outdrive you but you'll have mid irons to the green in many par fours, and par fives you may not be on in two but close enough to go up and down.  With your game you need to be sharp with your greenside shots and make sure when you miss it's on the correct side.

I hit the ball similar distance as well (a little shorter actually).  I play tees that range from ~5400 to over 6400 yards.  I would play our blue tees which are just over 6400 yards more if I could post scores against them (unrated for me).  I rarely shoot worse than 80 from any of these distances.  My women's index is currently +2.4.  If translated to a men's index it would be something between a 4 and 5.

Bottom line out of all that is more distance always helps given the same accuracy, but the OP, as others have observed, is leaving a lot of strokes on the table via aspects of the game largely unrelated to distance.  More GIRs, less 3 putts, less penalty strokes, closer proximity, etc... so many ways to trim strokes.  I doubt I will get longer, but I keep getting better by working on all other aspects of the game.

don;t care where I miss as good as I am with my chipping and putting...

  • 1 month later...

Thought to revisit this topic a couple months later. I've dropped my HCP a few strokes mostly with wedge play improvement from daily back yard practice. But also a few things have changed in terms of distance.

Perhaps most importantly, warmer,  dryer weather has added yardage. For instance,  I hit a 225 yd green with my 3H. Granted it was slightly downhill with firm conditions but still. Hit another green from 137 with my 9i...previously my 115-120 club.

I've also worked hard on my swing, primarily swallowing with less chopping. This has helped striking and reduced bad spin.

Added a 3W playing at 15.5 degrees and worked to become consistent. Knowing when and when not to hit the club helps me stay mostly out of trouble with it.

Changed my ball..now play 2 different balls selected for the condition. 1 maximizes distance, the other control.

With all these factors, 6500-6700 no longer seems extra difficult. Sure, there are always 3-4 holes that test the limits but I just play those with the attitude that bogey is par and perhaps my better wedge play can save me.

Yes father time has taken from me the "sport" at which I used to compete at a national level so I get it.  As for being cheap, I buy my balls either mint used or marked practice (print errors) and in bulk online. 😄  Playing these TM's around $1.50/ball.

How many touring pros play such balls. The answer is simple NONE.

I understand that they are very expensive , but if you desire to maximize your scores , you need experiment with the top balls  to see if they help your game

Many play with Taylormade TP5 and TP5X. A cosmetic print error or logo overrun doesn't change the ball 1 iota. Not sure your point.
