Anyone carry a 9 wood or higher lofted hybrid?

I swapped my 4h for a 9w a few seasons ago. 'Much, much easier to get the ball up in the air, but I can still keep it low when necessary. A have a stock Alta stiff shaft in it.

Back in 2015 I swapped my 5 iron for a hybrid. Best decision ever. A couple of seasons later I swapped the 6i for a hybrid, although it did go back into my bag last season after switching to a fade. The 4h was ditched in favor of a 9w, and the 5w was replaced by a 7w.

Basically, the ego went out the window in favor of clubs that I could actual hit with some consistency. 'Don't really care what number is on the bottom, or the loft. I'm a low spin, low ball hitting player. I accept that I need help getting the ball in the air, and more spin to get the ball to stop on the greens. The 9 wood certainly beats out the 4h (or 5i) in that regard.

Don't be afraid to tinker with the bag makeup. You have to be honest, though. If a club is difficult to hit, replace it.

A few weeks ago I blocked a drive right into the adjacent fairway on a long par 4. I had 205 yds to a back right pin location. There were trees between the two holes. If I was carrying my old hybrid, or a long iron, I would have had no choice but to hit a low punch under the trees, leaving myself 50+ yds out from the green. Instead I opened the clubface on my 9 wood, opened my stance slightly, and hit a massive high cut that landed on the front part of the green and rolled to the back. Easy par from there. It's amazing how high I can get the club.

At the same time I can also hit a low screaming hook with it if I close the club face. It has enough loft that I don't worry about smothering the ball, something I'd do frequently with the hybrid. Silly club is like a Swiss Army knife.

Oh, and I also use it around the greens to putt from off the putting surface.

Being lefty my choices of even 7-woods with decent amounts of loft (21-22 degrees) are limited. Much moreso for 7-woods. But I also don't see many high-lofted fairways in the bags of the right-handers I play with.

But I see plenty of 24-27 degree hybrids, not surprising because the median age of my group is somewhere in the mid-upper 60's.

I had a brief spell with a Ping G30 (I think it was) 7-wood a few years back. I really loved that club and used it a lot. No idea on earth why it isn't in my bag now, at some point I must have gotten something else and got rid.

I'm using a Sub70 hybrid #6 which replaces my 5 iron.  Just stupid easy to hit, for me much more consistent than a 5 iron.  So my longest iron is a 6.  The #6 got me 2 birdies on longer par 3s yesterday that I used to struggle with.  It's really a confidence builder.

I declared to my buddies that it was 9 wood season before the season started so I'm committed to it for now and I don't see me dropping it even when the season ends.

Really easy to launch and hit straight. Can play it out of the rough without any issues.  After the 9wood I go to a 5 hybrid then 5 iron since those distances don't lineup for me.  I may drop the 5 iron though to add another wedge and start at 6iron. I need to play with the 5hy a little more the figure out what I can do with it first.

I go from 5h (185 yds) to 6i (175 yds).

The 6i is a lower ball flight than the hybrid, so if I need a high launching 175 yd shot I grip down an inch on the hybrid.

Replaced my hybrid with an 11-wood and could not be happier with it.  High, soft, easy to hit and isn’t constantly trying to go left on me.

It’s also just really fun.

You raise a great point I've never understood.   Why do hybrids seem to want to get left so easily?  Even many solid strikes want to go left.  That said, the hybrids are predictable in that way, so I'm pretty much always playing for an 8-12 yard draw w/ a hybrid vs. a 5-7 HD draw w/ irons.  My driver and 5W draws are more akin to the irons than the hybrid.

Love my 7W and my high lofted hybrids.  Just so easy to hit.  I know there are a lot of really skilled players here but I need that help.  I can’t spell 3 iron.

I'm on record here on looking for a V-Steel 9w but I just put together a new to me Nickent 3DX RC hybrid with a FST 115 shaft and it flies plenty high and straight enough to put that hunt on hold......at least until the honeymoon period is over.

My dad carries a 9W and 11W. He doesn’t use hybrids and his irons stop after 6i. He has had trouble launching the long irons and hybrids as he ages. He is a freaking wizard with the high lofted woods. He has shot his age at least 15 times in the past few years. He is 75 years old and has a 7 handicap index.

A modern 9w has the same loft as the ping eye 2 5w and that 11w has the same loft as the ping eye 2 6w in my garage. A 13w would be the same loft as my ping eye 2 7w or my taylormade pittsburgh persimmon 7w...lee trevino used the taylormade 7w. ...manufacturers just jacked up the lofts on all their woods to fool the gullible general population of golfers. My zing 2 3iron would be the modern 5iron you cant hit well.

Ps...I prefer fwoods over hybrids...like your dad for my swingspeed fwoods are higher and dead straight.

I occasionally carry either a 36* Hybrid or a 25* fairway wood.  They work, but not well enough to justify a permanent place in my bag.

My swing speed is 70, but I can hit a 3HL off the deck or a 22* iron.  I do a pretty good job of hitting my irons high and straight.

As far as I know a 9W is about 23* loft and an 11W is 25*.  So not much gap there.   I play 9.5* driver, 13* Fw, 17*FW (4wood) , 21 * FW (7wood) and 25* FW. All original Callaway Rogue.  Good gap there. Then hybrids 30*, 34*, then to 8 iron, 9, PW, GW, and 58* W.  Gaps are all good.

7w and 9w are indispensable for me — 5i stays in the closet, and I will swap my 6i for a hybrid this off season.

If I could find a modern 11 wood, I would.

I don't have these specific woods, but I do carry a 3h, 4h, 5h, 6h instead of irons and my irons start at 8i. I've thought about picking up a 7w but the loft is so similar to my hybrids that I have a hard justifying the cost. I hit my hybrids off the tee and in the fairway with ease. I had a 5w but for some reason the idea of hitting 5w off the tee just got in my head and hitting it in the fairway was not good. For whatever reason, I have no qualms about hitting the 3h off the tee on any hole necessary, from long par 3s, to short narrow par 4s, to long par 4s, to par 5s. Simply put, I'm in the fairway more with my hybrids off the tees than any wood or driver I've ever owned. And as we all now, "golf is a game of precision, not distance." I use a Ping g410 4h and 5h, then last year ordered a Mizuno 7h (29*) with the same Recoil 95 shaft as my irons. I’m not in love with it yet, but I still hit it better than a 5 or loft-jacked 6 iron.
