Even before this was written I've thought that 18 was an opportunity lost.  I wouldn't relocate the green but I would open up fairway to the left of the creek more in the landing area distance from the tee.  Certain hole locations would be more easily accessed from the left hand side of the fairway and thus bring the creek more into play on the tee shot. 

 

I really like that creek as it will often lead to a few players attempting shots from it.  More of that is a good thing imo.

 

Doubt they'll ever do it because the area left of the creek is prime hospitality area and they're not going to turn down those $$$$'s.

So Mickleson, after abandoning the "long stinky bomb" approach co-leads ATM while Bryson hits long, stinky.....shots and is over par.  I find Bryson personally a little annoying but his approach fascinating.  He's committed to it but I wonder how long that committment will last.

Fair to say that Phil is a "more well-rounded player" than BDC?  After BDC's driving game goes south on him in a round what does he have to fall back on?  If Phil is spraying it off the tee he has a good recovery game and great short game to lean on that can bail him out.

Because winning even an alternate event on the pga tour means more than winning the Regions Tradition.

 

He has 8 top 5s in 16 starts here. I'm not surprised at all he shot 64 today. He might not win but I'd be shocked if he isn't right there at the end.

 

If I had to place a bet right now I'm on him to win. This course sets up beautifully for Phil and it's pretty incredible he's never won here.

Phil hasn't abandoned the "long stinky bomb" approach off the tee. He's still using a 47.5" driver. However after 6+ months of using a Taylor Made Original One mini driver as his 3 wood he had a great round driving and a scorching hot round of iron play. FWIW BDC is -1 after the first round. Would be funny if Phil won or finished top 5 because of a TM club.  😉Bet his WITB wouldn't show it.

Noted however at the time I wrote that Bryson had just made a pretty bad double on 15 to drop to +1.  Nice recovery though.

I was with those that said Phil was done as a competitor on the PGA Tour and one round is not going to change that but I will definitely be watching over the weekend to see if this is a one of show or the start of a comeback tour.

Phil said he has working on maintaining his focus during each entire round. He didn't feel his mechanics were that far off but he couldn't stay focused on each and every shot.
