Phil makes more than that a year.

Rory too? It’s close. Lots of guys make 20-30+

Would you quit a job at an established company for an unknown salary at a startup with no track record if they threw in a sign on bonus of one year of your current salary?

Oh, and it’s like 30% plus overseas travel.

I assume your comment about Phil's earnings includes both his on course and off course earnings.  Are you suggesting he wouldn't as much endorsement money if he took this PGL deal?

I liked this quote:

Quote

But will the PGL be successful in comprehensively upending golf? One top-100 player assessed the chances rather bluntly: “There’s no chance anyone has the balls to go over. Absolutely no chance.”

Has the PGA Tour had any recent discussions about making every player play every tournament once every X years like I think they do in the LPGA?

Dont they already have a similar rule? Isnt the PGA rule that every year you have to add a tournament(s) to your schedule that you havent played in the last 3 (?) years?

I could also be making that up LOL.

I'm so confused, the Golf Channel said the PGL "is now known" as the SGL - but Shipnuck is saying its two different competing new tours that are going to be competing with the PGA Tour? So two different, new tours, trying to both do...basically the exact same thing?

Well, that should go fine.

Possibly if it's just "a" tournament you haven't played, but I don't think there is anything stating you have to play in each tournament at least once every 5 years or anything like that.

I don't remember Tiger, Phil, Rory, or any other big name guy ever playing in something like the John Deer Classic or the one in Mississippi (Sanderson Farms I think is what it's called now). They definitely haven't played either in the past few years.

He could take a hit on two levels,

First, right now his sponsors can count on him playing on a tour with guaranteed TV contracts and have some degree of understanding of the exposure of their products will get to consumers.

Does this new tour have any TV contracts yet?

Second will playing for a Saudi  backed tour impact the sponsors interest in him?

Id say these guys would need to work with their sponsors to understand the impact on their value. If it’s lower, I’d expect the new tour would need to make up the difference.

But why bother taking the risk at all?

Unless you are either,

An aging pro like Rose or Casey.

Or, a college kid with no earnings yet. And that’s where my sweet draft idea comes into play.

It's all nonsense right now. If it were serious and the people competent, the first we would have heard was an announcement that 10 top players already signing an agreement.

This nails it, all that's happening right now is free planted publicity. Probably measuring market interaction and engagement to forecast potential after leaking some of this info on purpose.

Or even better "Here is our locked in 2022 schedule for the new golf league".

With the kind of money they are throwing around, how hard is it really to book courses, lock in dates and say hey public, here, we are serious, this right here is our schedule and where we will be playing, look at all these great courses we are going to feature.

The Saudis are throwing around billions of dollars. I honestly have no idea how much you would have to put up to reserve a big name course for Fall 22? Certainly they can afford whatever it is.

I would think getting all the players signed would be the first step before securing the courses, dates, etc.  You aren't going to build anything without hiring workers first. Design, hire, build/promote

But in the least shocking news ever, roughly 0 players have come out saying they will do it

I keep thinking about how, even if we assumed that the best 48 golfers in the world were participating, those limited fields are going to inevitably shine a spotlight on how streaky golf can be. Any random tournament sees a world class golfer firing a +6 over two days and missing the cut. By Sunday you're watching the golfers who, though they may not be the very best in the world over the course of the season, are the very best in the world over the course of those 4 days.

What's it going to be like on day 3 of these 48-golfer tournaments when you're watching some dude trudge his way around the course with a +9 around his neck? You don't have to watch that slog in a regular PGA event.

The European football Superleague was a similiar idea.  Run it like US professional sports.  Close the shop, control the spending and pretend mediocrity is the "cream" rising to the top.   No risk of failure, no risk of being relegated, no risk of not making money.

I moved to and grew up in Saudi Arabia when I was a kid cause my dad was an engineer there in the 70-80s..... We're from So Cal

When I told my dad the story of what's going on at lunch yesterday my dad had a complete different reaction from anything I've heard lol..... I told him about the PGL and lookin for great players to make it legit before I had a chance to talk about Jay and the fight my dad says " Oh that's great!"  wow why I asked.... He says that it will help Saudi and the surrounding areas to become more modern about how you should treat people because the league will have be on TV there and it will help set a wonderful example to lift them to better human standards..... I know exactly what he meant cause I lived the horrible caste system they have and how they treat women etc.... I could drive around town in our station wagon as a 10-year old but my mom could not etc... too many to list that still exist...

But I know most will just think golf and the impact on the PGA like I did.... but I like my dad's initial reaction was thinking beyond golf and how it could help oppressed people and change the old school mentality in Saudi...

Have any attempts at super leagues in any sport succeeded?  It seems the downside is much greater than the upside.  All the ones I can call to mind were failures.  The world football league ruined football for several years but that was from the 70's.

I guess I should have mentioned that I was thinking of American football.

Yes I’m familiar with it and it’s “reboot.” I was referring to your comment about super leagues not working. The Champions League clearly works.

Rickie! Doesn’t sound like he’s totally unapproachable...

“As for the story of the week in golf, the Premier Golf League/Super Golf League concept, Fowler said he and his team have been approached and that he is waiting to see how it plays out.

"There's a lot that needs to happen for that to even move forward,'' he said. "I can't say that I'm in, out or whatever. I still think the [PGA] Tour is the best place to be. So we'll see what happens, but we're happy where we are.''

I like how Saudi is shaking up the sports world. They already now is F1, about to host the biggest boxing fight ever. And now going to shake up golf. lol Got to respect their huslte.

Personally I have zero interest in this rubbish I am not their target market and only watch majors. Will love to see the big players jump but also expelled too. I bet Anthony Kim is kicking himself now. He would had jumped for the $30m a year lol

The only golfers this league would appeal to are big names with diminished games. In other words, people like Phil Mickelson...

Is the same Phil Mickelson who shot 64 yesterday and is leading the tournament, or a different Phil Mickelson?
