Why no GW on direct to consumer?

Recommended Posts

The DTC brands I have been looking at (Hogan, Haywood, NL, etc) all seem to not have a set GW.  I personally like the set wedges and prefer them over specialty wedges.  Why no love for the set wedges?

Given that a modern iron set's gap wedge is basically the same loft as the Pitching wedge I grew up with, I would not even consider a set of irons that does not have an accompanying gap wedge.

Srixon has great set GW’s if you order them. I have the 785’s and it is a great GW.

I couldn't tell you why those don't, but I got one with my Sub70 set.

My guess would be managing inventory and keeping margins profitable.  Allows them to track and manage specialty wedge inventory and sales, and not sit on extra set wedge inventory.

I agree.  It becomes a forecasting issue.

I think this is absolutely true, but may need more explanation...

I think the root cause of this is that at the "better player" category there isn't enough demand for set GW to justify it. I recall at TPC Sawgrass this year the announcers remarking that Westwood is one of the few tour pros to use a set GW, and that was primarily that he uses it as a full swing club.

If at that category most people are looking at their wedges as specialty scoring clubs, and can hit partial PW to plenty of distances as well, the DTC vendors [who don't have as much volume as the big guys] realize that the "better" player who even knows who the DTC vendors are may not be looking for a GW--or few enough are looking for a GW as to make it unprofitable to produce.

I actually was drawn to this thread's headline because I know that Sub70 does include a set GW... After all, I'm looking at the 699 Pros. But only in their players distance and game improvement category.

In their CB and MB categories, however, they stop at a 45 degree PW. No GW is offered there.

So even then, it follows the same pattern.

I think the majority of players are opting for "custom" wedges so a PW is the best you will get.

Same thing here. I have the 699s and the A (gap) wedge. As far as the better players clubs, I feel like most players that like and play CB or MB clubs are likely playing specialist clubs anyways. No need for a gap wedge in those sets. For them, Sub70 offers their DTC specialist wedges.

I was looking at the 699 pro and they only go to PW, Haywood only goes to PW.

Hopefully when the Callaway Signature I mean Kirkland Signature irons come out, they have some set wedges

I imagine it has to do with weaker lofts as well. My BH PW is 46*, if they include a GW @ 50 then they're putting people into a corner with their wedge selection. Being that there will be an additional cost for the GW, people aren't going to want to have to rethink their entire wedge setup and would likely either avoid buying it all together or just not use it, it seems like a waste from the OEMs.

Thanks. I completely missed that one. I figured that would follow the 649 Tour, 639 MB and 639 CB. Maybe Tommy Armour III wanted a set GW in there 😉

The 699 Pro offers an AW. They're just out of stock in Satin right now so if you go to the ordering section it won't let you select it. It shows AW on the page below that, and the 699 Pro Black still has the AW orderable as it's in stock.

Maltby iron sets have GW in the 50-51* range. I couldn’t get along with blade style head and went with a DBM head in this spot. It’s quite a bit longer heel-to-toe than my New Level 902 irons but I’m pretty flexible. Casual golfers eventually follow trends they see on tour, hence the disappearance of set GWs.
