Vet needle to replace a grip shooter

Recommended Posts

Wondering if anyone has tried a .18 vet needle with a full syringe to inject solvent into a grip for replacement. Most of the grip shooters seem to have problems.

originally I was thinking of making a grip shooter, but the end doesn’t fit a regular hose nozzle.
Thanks for the comments.

Grip shooters are a pain to work with.  To be honest I use mine less and less in my shop and instead use a normal bottle with a pointed tip and a grip removal tool.  It ends up being faster than messing with the needle and creating pressure in the bottle.

I tried the syringe method which worked decent for three grips until the syringe broke in half and I stabbed myself in my left hand.

After that I've gone back to my trusty removal tool made out of a skewer together with a pointed tip bottle (battery water bottle) as @J13 mentioned. Way to easy not to use this method imho.

I have my own shop and through trial and error this is the most reliable method.  Honestly, half the time spent with my grip shooter bottle and needle is trying to get it to repressurize.  It's a horrendous design and terribly unreliable.  Does it work?  yes but the time fiddling with it is enough to make me toss it in the trash

A syringe is a terrible way to go about it.  Wrong tool for the job.

I've been using a grip gun (canister and needle) for 40+ years.  Never had a problem.  By far the easiest method other than cutting off the grip.  I find the grip slider a messy job and even though I have one, it is not the way I would ever choose to use.

Still can't beat a sharp X-Acto knife for speed and ease of use.  "Oh, you want to save that 6 yr old grip?  Ahhh, NO."

Yeah we are talking about the grip gun (canister and needle).  They have major problems in quality control.  Some people get lucky and get guns that work just fun while others like myself return them only to get another one that only kinda works.  I can't even count the number of times I've had to take apart the ball bearing and spring.

As for saving a 6 yo grip haha, agree, that's a fools errand.

Golfworks offers a heavier duty needle that is definitely a upgrade.

If a grip doesn't come off with a compressor, I don't bother and just cut it off.

I use a steel tube over the grip to prevent exploding grips.  On the latest Tour Velvets, which seem extra fragile, I also first wrap over a cut-open grip to take up space, then insert my steel tube, then blow off with my compressor.

Using needles and solvent just isn't worth the effort IMO, and then usually there is old tape gunk stuck up inside the grip.

The gun and needle (when it works properly) is easy.  The problem is reliability.  In any case most grips that have been used for some time aren't worth saving.

squirt a little varsol down the shaft before you apply the airgun and it makes grip removal that much easier.

Don't use a needle to pierce the grip and inject a solvent.

A slip it could cost you a trip to the hospital and end up with a finger amputation if the solvent pierces a muscle.

simply squirt some varsol  down through the end cap hole. The airgun will vaporize it  between the shaft and the grip wall and loosen it for and easier pull.
