Worst golf balls ever

Recommended Posts

As a kid I had one of those ball retrievers that I used to grab balls on a par 3 with a pond right in front of the green. Found a lot of Maxfli Noodles in there. Figured I would use them whenever I played that hole. Lots of those balls ended up going back into the pond. After a few times, I'd guess that I was just re-finding the ball that I had hit into the water a few rounds before.

Wilson Blue Ridge from the late 70s. I found that they were a 1 piece ball when I bladed one with a wedge.  Half of the ball went left and the other half went right.  It’s the only time I topped, hook

the worst balls I find on the course are Nitros.. no idea what model they are, but they are literally stones.  the make the old Top Flites feel like balatas(new Top Flites are actually really decent).

the ones I throw into the pond/woods at the end of a blowup hole because it's clearly the balls fault and has nothing to do with my various swing flaws 😑

This is going way back to the late 1970s or early 1980s but, Polara.  It was a ball that supposedly corrected a hook or a slice. My dad loved them but he always liked gadgets and stuff.

The problem was it didn't go very far although the self correcting aspect more or less worked.

The USGA banned it and the company eventually went out of business.

I heard someone bought the name and they're trying to sell them again.

Oh gosh how balls have improved over the years. I am going back to high school, but does anyone remember cougar x-cats? Those things were junk.

Beta LS balls were like 12 bucks for 3-4 dozen back in the day. We'd use those things all the time in school. They even came in this little box thing. It was pretty cheap for a high school student.

Some of the old top flite balls were junk as well.

The crappy glow balls with a slot for a glowstick. Those things are absolute rock solid garbage. Great if you want to cave in a driver or fairway wood.

Good to hear cuz i was gonna go get some vice tours.

The Vice Tours are the longest ball I've ever played.  It's a 3pc Surlyn that performs as good if not better than any other 3 pc Surlyn ball I've played.  (Titleist NXT Tour, Callaway Diablo Tour, Callaway Hex Tour, etc. etc.).  At $16.99/doz 5 or more doz. they're a good ball.

When I started golfing I tended to be gifted a lot of Dunlop DDH III.  The DDH III dimple pattern was the absolute ugliest thing in golf.  Made it feel like using a Top Flite XL was a real treat compared to the DDH III.

Do you remember the DDH Masters ball? Even harder than the others but might actually stop on a green.

Who didn’t love a ball they sold at the drug store? Lol

I think they may well have been range balls but they were still better than the Kro Flite!

Still not the biggest fan of Costco's golf balls. They work for what they are, but I rather play recycled Pro V1's if we're talking about price. Just picked up Pro V1's in bulk from a guy on OfferUp for less than $7/doz, all in fantastic shape. Majority of them were 2019 and 2021 Pro V1's as well, barely used.

A buddy of mine who hit a consistent fade / slice played those back in the day.  LOL the way that he hit the ball would cause it to start moving to the right and then corkscrew around to the left.  Really weird to watch that flight!

Ha ha, yeah my dad, who could slice the ball off the planet, did the same thing with them! He was so proud of himself, "Found the fairway!"

Speaking for Bubba Watson: Volvik.

As for myself Cut Blue and Kirkland. Just because the ball honestly looked like it was floating in the air it spun so much.

Cut Blue.  Wanted to love them due to price point.  Needing to replace a ball after each wedge shot due to the cover getting cut, and actually embedding sand into the cover on a bunker shot made the price not so great

THIS. Gosh, what a disappointment...

Penfold Commando has a special circle in hell.

The Penfold wins/loses outright - but then it was  one-piece ball back when wound Balata was the shiz...

The absolute worst 'reputable' brand ball  I ever hit was a Titleist HVC. Again, this was back when Titleist made the DT wound and Tour wound with the balata cover... and when Titleist had absolutely no idea how to make a decent solid ball apparently.

I was a student at the time, but it was so bad I took a wedge on the next tee and hit it into a nearby lake in disgust. I like firm/clicky balls, but this was the most unpleasant rock I have ever come across - think the compression was reckoned to be around 110 and felt like 130 made with cement infused bakelite.

Nike's first attempt at golf balls.  I forget what they were called, but 2 blew their covers off the first round in play.  Just googled, Nike Precision Tour.

Worst durability, I would agree. But I think this ball really performs great.

Nitros. But, they are good for a beginner teenager who slices balls off the planet every other hole.

Played with a guy that packed a Nitro 45 ball box in the cart basket.  Probably used a dozen or so, but managed to have fun.

Surprised no one has mentioned the MacGregor Tourney.  Was a pure mush ball that Nicklaus supposedly played.  I always wondered if his particular Tourney's were in actuality,  very good golf balls while the Tourney's available to the public were the mush ones.

Also,  was surprised to read a few references to the Maxfli DDH.   I recall liking the surlyn DDH (red) quite a lot,  but found the balata (blue I believe) to be too soft.   I never much went in for balata balls believing the surlyn balls such the red DDH or Titleist DT's spun plenty and also had the added bonus of lasting more than 4 holes.
