Golfers Performance Post Baby

Recommended Posts

Rory and Rahm got me thinking about golfers post child and how it impacts performance (if at all)

Not that I imagine anyone keeps this stat but for anyone of the "stats guys" I think it would be interesting to take a look at some of the top golfers and their performance leading up to and post first child

Don't any of you dare suggest that getting married and/or starting a family can have an effect on an athlete's game or you'll have all the people from the Jordan Spieth thread building "you're misogyn

10 minutes? Maybe on her birthday.    Any other day 60-90 seconds and then back to whichever Stallone movie is on Netflix.

All it means is that they have less time to travel and work on their games because their wives are screaming at them to spend more time with the kiddos.  😬

It has reigned holy hell on my game for sure. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’m sure anyone in the top 100 has some readily available resources to make sure their wife gets plenty of help and their kid is well looked after when they are away.

You and I both know that nothing beats spending time with your own parents from a kids' perspective.  Grandma, grandpa, immediate and extended family and baby sitters/nannies are no substitute for parents.  So many kids end up messed up because of absentee parents.  Celebrity kids are no different.

My view is that it is such an individual thing to such an extent that there is likely no rhyme nor reason to it.

On a general level, children mean less time for other pursuits leading to less practice and higher scores but then look at Danny Willett - he has a kid and then the week later became (the worst (according to some)) Masters champ in history. Slightly different but Bubba adopted his first child and picked up his first green jacket.

People may want to put Rory’s floundering down to fatherhood but in all honesty, he went from competitor happy with winning golf competitions to head in the clouds, meditating and juggling guy, long before he became a dad.

It’s meaningless, just like the “wife issue” and all the other excuses for poor play.  People who are driven to practice, play and win will continue to practice, play and win.  It’s just another thing that separates the guys who want to get rich from the guys who want to be great.

Might be a product of the "Oh s***, now I have a kid so I need to focus harder so I can provide my family with creature comforts."  Hell, the guys you mention might win more majors the more kids they have.  I'm just sayin.......

There’s also the thought that having a child improves your odds winning. Or so some sports bettors believe. We’re talking professionals here of

course. Little doubt it for most amateurs it means playing a lot less.

Those of us who have kids know that life changes in a huge way.  I don't think it's a bad thing; I think many of us wanted our lives to change in a huge way.  Being one of those old everyday sunburnt lifers in the clubhouse bar isn't a life goal for many of us.  I basically didn't play more than once a year for 20 years, driving kids to sports most weekends and grinding at work because I had a family to support.  Didn't get back into it until maybe 7 years ago.  Funny thing is I didn't really miss it those 20 years because I had so many other nice things to do.  While a good touring pro can afford full time child care and all sorts of other travel luxuries, they also have to spend a lot more time practicing and playing.

Whats the difference between them working out and practicing for 6 hours a day and a guy with a 9 to 5?  Hasn't bothered DJ. I think if anything getting married would negatively effect your game more then having kids

Depends if your wife is a hag(putting it nicely) or not, haha.  Some wives expect their husbands to spend all their time caring care of them and the kids when not working.  My wife gives me the freedom to golf 2x a week because she knows that it's therapy for me and I absolutely love her for that.

For me being married was more of life change then having kids. Going from doing what you want when you want to having that go away took some time to get use too.

I guess I'm lucky then.  My wife gives me way more freedom than most women.  I still make sure I spend enough time with her though.  Don't get me wrong, I'm sure your wife is a wonderful person.
