Over the past few weeksI will hit the occasional shot that will go about 45-60degrees to the right and travel about 50 yards not matter what iron I hit. Well this past weekend every iron shot I hit had that same pattern. Driver and fairway woods were solid with my typical draw. I looked to see if I could see a strike pattern and noticed a lot of heel strikes but none off the actually hosel.

I always thought shanks travel straight right at a 90 degree angle.

Do I have the shanks or could this be another issue?

when you hit the ball off the side of the club and not on the face, its a toe shank

Nope.  Shanks can go 45 degrees and 50 yards.  It 's happened plenty of times for me.  It really depends how bad your shank is.  Full on with explode close to 90 degrees while a partial shank will produce that shot you are describing.  Of course driver and fairway metals won't do that because the hosel doesn't jet out like irons.

Shank.  Going 90* while not impossible (I actually witnessed a driver shank that pretty much went probably 75* right to an parallel green of the previous hole) can happen.   I was on the green when it landed and bounced into the bunker.   Nope the guy didn’t come over and get his ball, lol.

I take a mighty swing and apparently just barely clip the ball with the very toe of the driver. The ball goes right in a majestic high arc and bounces off a roof around 100 yards to the right and ends up in the right rough. It had the trajectory of a well-hit GW - actually very pretty. That was my first one in all the years I've been playing.

Keep in mind that it only requires the edge of the ball striking the edge of the hosel where it meets the face, in order to create a terrible shot.

Some of your heel strikes are catching that edge

This is what I was going to say. Also if you think about it, how else could a ball travel like this? Either it needs to be coming in contact with the hosel in some amount, or the clubface needs to be pointing 45* to the right, which would be pretty easy to catch. 😅

I’ve learned there are two types of shanks:

1) You’re hitting the hosel.

2) You’re glancing the ball with a very open face.

I had issues with #2 all year and found I wasn’t releasing through impact correctly. Then I found the “catapult swing” by Danny Maude and have a new found love in golf.

Guilty as charged.  Probably happened to me 3 times.  My swing was so off during those times.  Toe shanks feel the worst.  Like running a jack hammer for a second.  You never forget that feeling........

I bet it left a nice mark on the tip of the toe side.  It's pretty embarrassing when other golfers ask how that mark got on that spot.

Can't shank from the toe.  That is just an open face.

Semantics...if it looks like a shank, feels like a shank, and sends shivers up your spine like a shank, it a shank.

Also known as the cue shot.

As to the OP, sure sounds like a shank. They make a distinct clank that is very different from a normal shot.

No a shank is a shank.  What you are describing are MISHITS!!  Can't correct a shanking issue is one is not shanking!

What are you yelling about?  I didn’t describe anything other than the bone-chilling look and feel of a shank, and you react with caps, exclamation marks, and at least one typo making your last sentence almost incomprehensible.  🤷‍♂️

I've never hit a shank that if I looked at the hosel carefully I didn't see a little mark where some plastic left there.

If you see a lot of heel strikes it's very unlikely these are toe shanks.  They are hosel rockets.

I've hit shanks that went straight because they were so bad the center of the hosel met the center of the ball and I just hit a worm burner right at target.

Can't be learned, can't be taught.  It's a talent.

For someone who is little dense upstairs can you be more clear here?  I am bald(naturally).

A toe shank is not the same as a real shank which is off the hosel. When you hit the ball off the hosel it will go sideways. It’s infuriating

Probably just a poorly phrased reference to a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode where Larry gets into it with a guy who voluntarily shaves his head and isn’t really bald.

Basically as someone afflicted with bouts of real honest to goodness hosel shanks I don’t have any sympathy for the generally poorer player who can barely make contact with the clubhead occasionally hitting it off the toe. As a hoseler, I’m often completely flummoxed trying to move the ball away from the heel towards the toe.

Overgeneralize much? It happens with low singles like myself. Off the toe is from pulling away from the ball and hosels  from moving towards the ball, generally.

That was my point .... fixing what you call toe shanks will not help with hosel rockets.

Which is not the question the Op was asking. Both have the same result. Wasnt asking how to fix it.

A shank is off the heel/hosel, sometimes called a hosel rocket, abrupt right.  My best was ugly low right 150++yds, not sure, OB.
