How do Tour Guys Deal with Blisters

smashdn

Recommended Posts

Easy answer might be they don't get them due to callouses.  But after a decent lay-off or a marathon range session where you work on a single certain shot, they have to get blisters right?

I opened up a good one on my third knuckle of my ring finger and have a scramble tomorrow.  Anybody got any insight on how to get it toughened up?  In baseball I have heard of pitchers soaking the fingers in pickle juice.  I don't want to dry out my pickles at home so that method is out.

Right now I have some triple antibiotic on it and a extra long bandage.  I want it to dry out and toughen up but it is still raw and I hit it on something earlier and it weren't too fun.  I'll wrap it with athletic tape when I play.

Perhaps semantics, but those are calluses, not blisters. Calluses happen over time and are pretty normal for most golfers, blisters happen quickly. If a golfer is getting blisters it might be a grip/swing issue causes excessive pressure/friction

Yes, I was replying to the original question of do they get callouses.

Not to mention, those calluses are impressive for instagram and all, but need to be trimmed off and maintained. Hands require maintenance for things like golf, gymnastics, weightlifting, where where you cut off some of the callus to prevent them from tearing and keeping your hands/skin healthy and in top shape to perform. Unless you're brand new to golf, those major tears should be avoidable.

Yeah I trim mine on a regular basis. I at times have beat 200+ balls a day, I can't say I have ever formed a blister.

Super Glue gel is your friend... I always carry it in my bag, usually use it on 5-7 day golf trips playing 36 a day.

It will sting for a few seconds when you apply it,  When the glue dries and kills the nerves endings in the area and creates a hard cover over the blister.  after two/three days the glue peels off and the skin under is healed.

genius. I have a big golf trip planned to a pretty humid area. I am for sure bringing some glue.

Super Glue is a cyanoacrylate adhesive and can cause tissue damage due to toxins it contains.  Not recommended for use on open wounds...

When I took up the game, my practice sessions averaged 1100-1300 balls per week plus a round or two of golf.  Do the math... I did that for nearly 5yrs.  Thing is, I never had to deal with blisters or calluses.  Always had nice new TV standard grips, replaced them before the surface affected my grip, never over gripped, and I used medical tape on certain fingers to protect against friction, and at the end of every day, used quality hand cream.

As others have said i would bet many of them have developed pretty thick skin over the years to where they don't get this much anymore. I am thinking that pic of Alex Noren is the exception rather than the rule. A newbie hitting 1000 balls would get their hands torn off --Over time if you do this for a job it would stop happening

When i played high school and college basketball my hands got pretty tough, i could jab a pen or something into certain parts and feel nothing. You are probably like "Jeff, was this from repeated monster dunks that you were throwing down on fools?"...and of course the answer is yes.

my favorite is Cramer Tuf-Skin....junior high, high school & college athletics, stuff always worked well on me

I worked at an old school sporting goods store in HS and college.  I remember the Cramer stuff.  They made a little of everything.  Lots of sports medicine type stuff.  Talc and stick-um all the way to shower soap and ankle braces.  Probably jocks as well.

I'll swing by the rite-aid or walgreens and see about some dermabond or second skin.

Normally by this time the callouses are there.  But with all three of my kids in soccer this spring I haven't played nor practiced as I normally do.  I'll definitely wrap the known hot spots prior to playing tomorrow.

Before I discovered doctors & pharmaceuticals I always had some of the Cramer Red Hot on hand for my knees.  Did not take much, but worked well & lasted a long time.

One physician I worked with many years ago was the head orthopedic doc for the University Nebraska football team back in Osborn's heyday.  I did ask him once about Cramer products, his response was something like there is a reason it is in every major athletics sports room and it is not paid endorsements.

I took the bandage off of it when I left work yesterday.  It has toughened up pretty well.

I am still going to tape it well for today though.  Dang thing is about 1/4 of the way around on the top of my knuckle down on the palm side.  I've got good callouses and tough skin on the palm side.  This knuckle rubs my gloved index finger on my top hand.  I use a loose overlap grip.

Maybe it's just me, but 14 rounds in 7 days - why?

Why not?

Fresh air, some exercise, enjoying a game you presumably like. Plenty of time in the evening to have a nice dinner and a few drinks.

Back in the old days, we popped a blister with a ragged knife, squeezed out all of the stuff in it, then stapled piece of duct tape on it and went back to hitting low, rising knuckleball draws with our manly MacGregor persimmon woods with full-cord Victory grips and rebar stiff steel shafts... Arrrrgh.

A ragged knife? Luxury! When I were little, we didn't 'ave no ragged knives in the house--not that you could call it a house, mind. When we got a blister, we'd 'ave to go int' woods looking for a rabid badger to bite into it before we could squeeze the stuff out and 'ave for dinner.

I would have to assume pro's don't have them as their hands and feet are used to it.

My feet are pretty tough as I walk all my rounds and hands are used to making the swing I make and have some hard patches the developed over time. The body adapts.

The time(s) I have had blisters or even tender feet/hands is if I took a long time (4 or 5 months) off golf for some reason. Luckily I have only done this once in the last 15 years.
