Generation 3 P790 in 2021?

In April I was fitted for generation 2 P790s with KBS Tour 2020 T shafts (through GOLFTEC). After several delays they are slated to arrive in about a week. It’s been a long wait. All the while, my Ping i20s are looking older and older each day.

My GOLFTEC coach who fitted me said it would be cautionary to cancel generation 2 to order generation 3 (without hitting them, first). He’s also not confident they will have generation 3 available to test before my generation 2 P790s arrive.

What went into your decision to either stay with your generation 2 order or instead order generation 3 without seeing/testing?

Photos aside, I would expect incremental, even if minor, improvements; however, when I shared this with GOLFTEC the feedback I received is that generation 1 and 2 were very different irons and that I can’t expect generation 3 will be better suited for my game if I blindly order.

Looking forward to hearing your feedback.

I was in a little bit different but similar situation. I went to Club Champion and got fitted for new irons near the end of June. I got fitted into the Gen 2s for the P790. My current irons were the Ping G20s. When I was told it was going to be $2,000 and I could only order through them because no one else (not even Taylormade was selling them) I decided to hold off. Then I saw the pre-order for the Gen 3s. After talking to Taylormade (who said they were fitting people to the Gen 3s using the Gen 2s), then noticing the price was going to be about $500 less than CC and I’d have the latest and greatest model, and finally the “hotshot” issue that Gen 1 and 2 faced I was told was going to be resolved. All those went into my decision to purchase the Gen 3s over spending the extra money for the Gen 2s. While I would’ve had the Gen2s sooner, I figured what’s another month of waiting. Plus, coming from the G20s, anything is going to be better than what I have now. Not sure if this helps you any, but that’s my experience.

I was in a similar situation with club champion. Got fitted to the fujikura pro 95 with the gen 2. Ended up going to a demo day after and got fitted to a shaft that Taylormade offers. Wouldn’t have gotten them until around now, so I ended up pre-ordering these with the specs I was fitted for. Can always switch the shafts in the future if needed.

It'll be interesting to see if the P790's help you score better. My guess is that they won't. But I don't blame you for upgrading, I upgrade every couple years whether it's helpful or not! You will see a massive change in looks and perhaps a significant improvement in feel though. And new stuff is fun and adds some excitement back into the game.

I was never fit for the G20s, so not only was the fit better, but I’m probably going to be getting an extra 20 yards per club now. We will see what happens!

I was hoping TM would realize they don't need "TUNGSTEN" printed on the cavity.

Lol.  It's like Tyson and Purdue printing on their chicken packages that they don't use hormones, when hormones in chicken haven't been legal since the 1950s.  Neither one is going to be the first to remove that unnecessary language, so it stays on the packaging forever.  If Callaway is printing Tungsten on their clubs, Taylormade wouldn't be caught dead without doing the same, lol.

Well the good news is that I’m watching the sun rise on my first day of vacation. The bad news: I just got the email none of us want. My shaft (nippon 950 neo) is delayed until October 11. Not much I can do, but it is still disappointing. I preordered on July 10 for reference.

Ya'll keep forgetting that companies cant get the raw materials for many golf products right now due to the pandemic and increase in golfers...The days of instant gratification are gone for the next couple years...Plan accordingly...

I demo'd and ordered them on Saturday.  They are really crisp looking - the finish is very satiny, similar to the satin you see on the Mizuno JPX line.  The clubs felt great and were definitely long.  The TM rep explained that they dialed spin back in to improve angle of descent and worked in new/different speedfoam to increase consistency and avoid flyers.  From testing, I would agree that was the case.

Looking for some advise.  Been working on my game a lot this season (for the first time in 10+ years).  Part of that process is updating all the clubs in my bag.  I've decided I'm going TM across the board for various reasons.  I hit the SIM2 Max and the P790 (2019) 7-irons earlier this year at a demo day at my club, and I was definitely getting more distance from the SIM (as expected due to difference in loft).  That said, neither club was really set up correctly for me (I'm 6'6" and they had limited +1" shaft options), which is a common issue I've found with demo clubs anywhere I go.  My gamers are currently Mizuno MX900s (from 2006).  I have 5-PW which are lofted from 27 to 46 degrees which I typically hit between 170 (5 iron) to 120 (PW).  I'm working on eliminating my early extension and bringing my ball flight down, so I should be able to find some more distance.  Been playing a lot lately (hitting the range ~5x per week) and pretty consistently scoring ~93.  That is a big improvement for me and I'm hoping it will continue as I scored 40 on 9 just this past weekend -- with a double bogey on the last hole 😞

Here's the question, I would love to have a full set of P790s but I'm afraid I might just not be there yet so I feel like I might be doing myself a disservice by not going with the SIM2s.  I'm sure either set will be a big improvement from my 15 year old irons.  I just really don't like the look of the SIM2s and don't want to get too used to a set of clubs with crazy strong lofts since I'm committed to continuing working on my game. Should I consider doing some sort of a split bag and make the loft 1 degree weaker with the SIM2s (4-7) and 1 degree stronger with the P790s (8-AW)?  Upgrade to the SIM2, see how things go for a couple years, then reassess?  Keep working with my existing set?  Bite the bullet and "learn" on a full set of the P790s?  Or am I looking at this all wrong?

I understand that a proper fitting is the best way to get these answers, but I'm also interested in what this community has to say.  Obviously there are a lot of people pulling the trigger on this set before they are even available to hit!  Feedback appreciated.

How fast do you swing? I'm short in stature, and swing speed. I can hit the stock 6 Iron P790 pretty good. If you swing it well, I don't think the 6 iron or even 5 iron would be hard for you to hit. But then again you are taller so that head gets smaller the further you have to swing it!

The P790s are already strong lofted. Is the early extension causing you to present too much dynamic loft, thereby increasing launch too high? Pros hit their irons really high. I'd bring the Sim2Max up before Id bring down the 790s. As a matter of fact I am planning to order a set of new 790s and weaken the lofts in the long irons.

Strike is fine on 6 and 7 but ball flight feels like it fizzes out too low. Last year I frankenstein'd a set with a M3 5 wood weakened 1.5 degrees, P790 7 Irons 6-7 stock loft, P770 8-AW strong 1 degree. Yeah went a little crazy. Wondering if I should sell the whole lot and do a P7790 set, maybe keep the sim2max 5 iron, or replace just the p790 irons to match the P770s. P770s are easy to hit, I do lost maybe 1/2 club on 8 iron, but match the rest on the higher irons.

So much to think about.
