Generation 3 P790 in 2021?

I for one am not going to trust a video or imaging showing the comparison...to many differences with the clubs to make an apple to apples comparison with video...the biggest being the chrome finish on 2019...Brighter lighting will automatically make the top line look thinner due to the human eye not perceiving the highly reflective egdes to be part of the same surface...the stin finish doesn't have these reflective edges making it be perceived in videos or pics to be thicker...I will trust the folks on here who have both clubs in hand and reporting what they see and for the most part are saying they are about the same. Can't wait to get mine.

Everyone knows the best way to evaluate golf clubs is to look at random pictures on the internet and jump to conclusions and make bold and definitive statements about the golf club in question.   Physically seeing them and hitting them is so yesterday.

It's a video where you can clearly see that the top line has a wider flat surface with no polished chamfered edges.

What's the difference in seeing it in a video or in your hand? You're still seeing the same wider topline.

At address it looks identical to prior generation (size, top line).  It’s just the finish that makes it look thicker in the photos.

It sounded a bit quieter and felt pretty soft.  You could definitely tell where you struck it on the face.  Didn’t get to collect any data.

And here is another person who actually saw them side by side in person and said they look identical.  So there is that....

Why is that more credible than seeing them side by side for yourself in the video? They may be same thickness towards the top of the club, but as seen in the video, the old models top edges tapers off more, leaving a narrower top surface. Someone seeing them in the flesh doesn't change that. Just means that they don't mind looking down at a less tapered top line or a matt finish that make them 'look thicker'.

Because golf is played live..not in a video.  I don't even know what to say if there are folks that think seeing things on video is an exact copy of seeing it in person.  There are so many examples in all aspects of life that will never be captured accurately on video.    I have seen the Masters on TV many many many times...being there in person makes the course look different.    If the video is enough for you to not be interested in a golf club then that is 100% your right as only you can make your decision....but if I am dropping $1500, I am going to go hit clubs and make the final decision in person.

Good quote from the txg lads, ‘if you think the p790 topline is too thick, then they aren’t aimed at your type of golfer’

Couldn't agree more. Had Gen2 P790s from October 2019 to November 2020. They helped take me from a 13.1 handicap down to 7.6. Had only previously played GI irons and decided these even started looking like shovels to my eye. After a bunch of different trials (MP-20 MMC, 2019 T200, and i210), I settled on a combo ZX5/ZX7 set and down to a 6.5 at this point trying to get lower.

Love what they're doing with the Gen3 P790s, but as the TXG boys said, they just aren't aimed at me now. And that's okay. They sure look pretty though and I appreciate what TM is doing with them. Looking forward to the TXG review tomorrow!

You realize that tour players use p790 irons right?  Mike Weir and many others play then. As a 7 you’re not above them.

Sigh. I never said that. I said they're too thick for my liking.

I love the P790. It enabled me to get much better over that time period. But I wanted something a little less chunky to MY eye. And I'm playing the best golf of my life with my Srixon ZX5/ZX7 combo set.

Wasn’t referring to you at all. If anything I’m agreeing with your previous post.

I know. The person that responded above your previous post under my initial one implied I thought I was above the P790 as a 7 handicapper now. I just wanted it to be known that wasn't the case. Apologies for the mix up.

It felt like he was trying to argue with me and put words in my mouth (or on the internet). I'll always love the P790 and to be perfectly honest, with a reshaft, I probably could still be playing them. But they definitely started causing me issues because they looked big behind the ball in the lower end of the bag (I had 5-AW). It was a personal preference--the clubs themselves are fantastic and judging by the teaser that the TXG guys mentioned today in the live YouTube video, they'll be even better this generation.

I broke down & did the pre-order. I do not mind the thickness of the top line at all. As long as everything looks proportional to my eye it's fine. And these do to my eye. That's why I like my Apex 19's so much.

To me If the top line is too thin then the heel to toe length starts to look too long & vice versa. It's all very subjective. I tried to like the PXG 0311P Gen 3's but in the end all I could think of when I looked down on them at address was the blade length was too long...

Ended up going with these after having better numbers vs my Mizzy 921 tours. Learned from the 2019s being shorter and order +.75 over standard so they will play .5 over. My 2019s came in short and I hated them.  That was one of several reason. Just a bad experience. The numbers didn’t lie in my fitting so I’ll be gaming the 2021s hopefully for a long time.
