Graphite Design 3W shaft?

Personally wouldn't recommend a low/low shaft in fairway metal.  It's fine off the tee but most golfers need extra height and spin off the deck.  I did some testing when I decided to go to get fit for a new 3 metal last year and also tested the Diamana TB this year.  It's a great mid/low shaft for fairway metal if you're open to looking for something not GD.  GD makes plenty of great shafts for fairway metal.  The IZ, TP and VR come to mind.  All mid/low shafts with the IZ being the highest launch out of all 3.

Thanks man!

I'm def open to shafts outside of GD.

I had the DI in my 3w before and I liked it but sometimes it brought left into play and trying to avoid that.

Out of the IZ, TP and VR, which do you think would keep left out of play the best?

Thx!

I found the TP to be a good middle ground of the DI vs BB. Very very stable but nice mid flight with spin. Have actually found myself recently shopping for a decent priced TP7 to try again in my F9 tour 3 wood.

It's a great shaft in my driver and that's why curious about it in my 3W now.

Thx!

Not if you can loft up. Its easier to use loft to adjust height and use the shaft for feel and timing. Trying a different shaft for height is thorny at best

AD-DI 8X/9X is the goat fairway wood shaft imo.

7X and 8X for me but 100% agree with this

TP for sure.  It plays the most similar to the DI with same spin but launches just a hair lower.  HD is also a good shaft however, it launches higher than the TP and is softer in the tip.

All else being equal, the TP will protect against the left miss out of those 3. I have had a TP 7x in my 3 wood for past 3 years and it has been so good for me. Feel is awesome (typical Graphite Design smoothness), provides a nice mid-mid/high launch, keeps spin in a tight window, and is typically very straight or favors a little fade. I am able to turn it over if needed without fear of losing it left. Just pay attention to tipping if using in a fairway head, I ended up tipping it an extra 1/2 inch. Because of the accelerated taper from mid section to upper tip, a heavier fairway club head will make balance of the club feel very head heavy. Through some trial and error tipping a full inch did the trick.

Just a side note- TP will feel and play much tighter than a DI, especially if you have a later release.

💯 agree with this. Played almost all GD shafts and just sold my TP and going back to the IZ. Will probably pick an IZ7 for my 3 and 5 woods. My two favs are the TP and IZ.

Same here.  Waiting for a TM tip for a IZ 8s that just arrived so I can try it out in a TM SIM Ti 3w which is also supposed to arrive this week.

Been having a hard time finding a 3w and may just stick with the SIM Ti 5w tuned down to 17*. Not as long as a 3w but easier to hit from the deck and very easy from the tee.

TP is a great shaft for the driver I just did not like it as much in my PXG Proto fairway wood.  Both I ended up living on from.

IZ 6 gave me the longest drives of any GD shaft in a driver but was also prone to a 2-way miss for me.

Moved to a HD 6s in my Epic Max LS and looking to see how the IZ 8s works in a fairway wood.

I have the stock Diamana FW 75s in my TM SIM Ti 5w and it surprised me how good it fits my swing so that is staying.  Playing it at 17* currently but May loft up to 18* or 19* if the 3w feels as good and I can get a big enough gap from the 3w to 5w.

Either be the stock Diamana or the IZ 8 in the 3w if all goes according to plan.

Thanks. How would you compare the IZ vs HD in a driver? Never hit the HD, but it sounds really good.

HD is a better feeling TP.  TP is “crisp” feeling while HD is more of a “thump”.

HD seems to launch a touch higher with about the same spin as TP.

I really am enjoying the HD in a Epic Max LS.  Played the TP in a Mavrik last year which was a nice combo as well.

IZ was longer for me as it launched higher and spins more than both TP or HD but if I went after it with the IZ it would get wild.

IZ seems to perform better with a smooth swing as the middle is a good bit softer than either the TP or HD but not as soft as the DI.

IZ feels very good and the reason I wanted to try it in a 3w as I would like the extra launch and spin in a 3w if i can keep it from getting too wild.

GD chart does a very good job of comparing directly the different characteristics of each shaft.

DJ is meh for driver.  Make an ok fairway metal shaft though.  Launches high and spins a lot.  Good for slower ss.  XC is a very solid low/low shaft.  It's one of the shafts I tested when I went in for driver fitting last year.  I tested 14 different shafts if I remember correctly and in the end went with the Ventus Black.

HD reminds me of a beefed up MT with newer materials. Love the HD in my driver.
Professed GD fanboy, but never got along too well with any of the in my 3w (and I’ve tried many combos).

All that said, I recently found what I believe to be the ULTIMATE 3w shaft....

Oban purple (I got the newer tour reserve ion finish). Have it in a sim max2 15°, and I can’t wait for the 1 or 2 times p/ round I get to hit it 🤣

I have an MT in my M2 HL and it's a magical combo. Easy to hit of the deck or the tee. I play my "4" wood at 42.5" GD Mt 8tx tipped 2 inches lol but it feels smooth. The 2 inch tipping was done by accident at the golf shop here, when I had it installed the guy was like "yeah I did the standard 2 inch tipping for a fw" 😳🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️ but it turned out to be great, go figure.

My swing speed is in the mid to upper 90s nowadays (age 72 and counting).  I have the GD XC in my driver.  I have played the AD-F, a fairway wood specific shaft, and really liked it.  I sold the 3 wood it was in, but will likely get another one.  The XC has a soft butt section and stiff mid and tip sections.  The AD-F is butt firm with a gradual softening to the tip.

The XC is advertised to be a low to mid launch, but I hit it mid to high.  The AD-F is an easy to launch high shaft and has that classic GD feel and it doesn't balloon.
